Unpasturized cows or goats milk?

coasterqueen wrote: I know this might sound like a strange question to some but is there anyone here who drinks unpasturized cow's or goat's milk? If so how do you like it? For anyone who drinks goats milk why did you pick it over cows milk?

TIA.

moped replied: I don't but I am curious about this too.....

coasterqueen replied: Yeah, we are switching to organic milk and DH is wanting me to go for goats milk because apparently the body digests it better, therefore healthier for us and our children BUT I'm not sure about it. happy.gif I've tasted unpasturized goats milk, not bad but I haven't tasted unpasturized cows milk. I know goats milk doesn't have that film of fat at the top, so it sounds more appealing that's for sure. DH, Kylie and Megan seem to like the goats milk. It has a bit of a twang at the end that I'm told one could get used to. happy.gif

gr33n3y3z replied: I know I read this some place but this isnt it but close enough

http://www.metrokc.gov/health/prevcont/raw-milk.htm#risks

But then again so many ppl. drink it and never complain about illnesses dunno.gif

coasterqueen replied: Thanks Lisa. I could see all those risks when we are talking about big huge farms who feed their animals food with pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, other animal parts, etc. Hence those farms aren't practicing CLEAN safe ways of raising their animals or of 'extracting' the milk, that's why it HAS to be pasturized. ICK! IF you get your unpasturized milk from a farm who is certified in raising goats/cows and is the safe practice of milking them there are none of these risks. BUT the key is to get a certified safe-practicing farm. Actually there are a TON more risks in drinking pasturized milk than unpasturized...cancers, etc. Yes, people have been drinking pasturized milk for an eternity, but cancers have been around just as long.

But again, you are right, there are many health risks if you don't do your research and trust the person you are getting the milk from.

gr33n3y3z replied:
That is so true and most ppl. dont do their home work

Its good that you have those options in your area smile.gif

Jackie012007 replied: Goat's milk is great... growing up I had problems digesting cow's milk so the neighbor down the street (who actually babysat me when I was young) starting giving us goat's milk, as they raised goats and had a small dairy farm. Goat's milk tastes just like coes milk, but it is so much easier to digest. Goat cheese is the bomb too... that is what I miss most about living at home! Now it's soy milk for this girl!

coasterqueen replied:
I was allergic to dairy as a baby and my parents fed me goats milk til they couldn't afford it anymore. I do believe it has an 'after taste' I guess you can say, but it could be in my head too. happy.gif We are thinking of raising our own goats if we can get the money together to do so. We originally wanted goats to eat the underbrush in our timber land, as DH's family used to raise them here a long time ago to do the same, but now we are thinking of utilizing them for the milk as well.

Haven't tried goat cheese, but now that we are going towards organic I'm sure it's on our list of things to try. happy.gif

I try to steer away from soy because of things I've read about them, but I know many who drink it. You are vegetarian, right? I had a vegetarian co-worker that swore by everything soy. I haven't tried the soy milk.

gr33n3y3z replied:
That is so nasty tasting

Jackie012007 replied:
Well I used to be until my OBGYN yelled at me, said I wasn't getting enough protein and my baby would suffer blahblah.gif ... so I do eat meat occasionally but we get it from DF's parents... they bought a cow and then the guy who raised them (woo organically) then slaughtered it bawling.gif and made different things like ground beef and steaks... I hate it but if it's for the baby then I do it. But no I haven't really gotten into the soy craze... my cooking consists of things that can be cooked around meat dishes, since DF is a big meat eater. I eat a lot of lentils and veggies, and have cooked a little bit with tofu.

yeah goats milk has a bit of a tangy aftertaste, you aren't crazy! Feta cheesze is made with either goat's or sheep's milk, and goat cheese in general is very crumbly and tangy... with not nearly the fat content of cheese made from cow's milk. We have a lot of menenite (sp?) communities up here and it's pretty easy to get goat cheese and goat products as most of them run little stores!

Jackie012007 replied:
lol yeah I can only do it if it is Vanilla flavored... straight up soy milk tastes like death

3_call_me_mama replied: Growing up I drank a fair amount of "RAW" milk (unpasteurized cows milk) and honestly it was really good. It doesn't have that milk after taste that i can't stand (the coat your throat taste) Also my best friend had a dairy farm so it was really fresh, not straight form teh cow, but from teh cow through teh bulk tank /cooler thing and into our jug. It was especially yummy as teh cream settles ot teh top and gave it a sweet taste. AND it made teh best whipped cream if you skimmed that cream off and baked with it. !LOL

Karen i have a site that has a ton of info that might be of use to you. It's a natural family living site, that has everythin gform diapering, to breastfeeding, to babywearing to nutrition and eating healthy to children adn adult health. It sound like you guys fit in a lot of these areas and although some of the areas may not pertain to you (cloth diapers for example) or you may feel differently about some things you just can avoid those sections. I'd gladly pass the site on to you if you are interested. It's where I get most of my nutrition info and help for our switch. Let me know and I'll shhot ya a pm (I know I could have said all this in a PM but OH well I was already typing here! LOL)

coasterqueen replied:
Please do send me the website. Thanks!

BTW, I asked DH why he wants to go with this different way of living if he won't do cloth diapering and his response was "well, Megan isn't that far out of the diaper stage anyways and the expense couldn't be justified now". rolleyes.gif Bologna! laugh.gif He's still smoking too (outside) so he just cracks me up with all this stuff. He is so serious about going organic and such that he's nagging me every minute about it, lol. Also, get this...he won't let me use the microwave anymore! I'm having a hard time with that one! rolleyes.gif tongue.gif

AlexsPajamaMama replied: My step mom grew up on a farm and as a kid they drank cows milk out of the big tank they milk the cows into, store bought milk was a treat and a half!

Ive never had unpasturized cows milk or goats milk

3_call_me_mama replied:
Dennis is on teh microwave kick too! He was reading a study on it and was like. "Don't cook our meals in there anymore!" I dont' use it often, but heating up leftovers adn veggies is mainly what i do with it 9Or defrost stuiff!) I'l pm that site to you. And LOL about the diaper thing!
