C&K*s Mommie replied: Thanks for passing that along, Jimmie. I did not know any of that.

Ashlynn's Mommy replied: I heard on the news that certain sodas like coca cola products have high levels on benzonate in the and it can cause cancer. any one else hear this?? wavey.gif

TheOaf66 replied: great, just what I want to hear wink.gif

redchief replied:
It's the citric soft drinks that are the problem, if indeed there is one (the science types are arguing about the testing methods)

Apparently when you combine sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate and ascorbic acid (aka vitamin C), and heat it, some of the compound breaks down into benzene. Scientists, realizing it's the heating that causes the benzene formation are changing the test methods to get more accurate benzene readings. They figure that since most people don't heat their soft drinks, there's a possibility that benzene isn't a problem. Isn't chemistry fun?

kit_kats_mom replied:
Right, but if you live in say...oh I dunno...Florida, and store your two liters in the billion degree garage before you refrigerate them, it could be a problem. wink.gif

redchief replied:
The science types, and believe me, I'm no scientist, are taking that into consideration. They aren't eliminating the heating during testing, but altering the rate and amount of heat to more reflect real world conditions. I'm not a big soft drink consumer, so I've only been following the story lightly since Pepsi got slapped with a lawsuit in the beginning of May.

mammag replied: I'm suddenly very relieved we are giving up soda here........ but then, I'm sure I'm eating or drinking or using a myriad of things that could cause cancer. It's rather scarey if you really let yourself think on it.... blink.gif

~~*Missi*~~ replied: well i am quite happy to say that all those on the list i have never drank nor plan to...
I don't think sabrina has ever had koolaid yet.. My dad use to drink country time lemonade long long ago but he found that frozen minute maid was better then powder so.....
If pepsi as one of the nation's largest soda producers and RICH company knew (i am sure someone has this data there) and saw the potential lawsuits (cause we know there are alot of sue happy americans these days) why would they be so stupid to produce and market them..... that is why it makes me wonder who is stretching the truth more... the company selling the product who looses millions by being sued for having a dangerous product on the market or the free lanced research company that has nothing to loose????? makes ya wonder but all the same don't drink the stuff.

BAC'sMom replied: It's NOT just sodas there are also some juice boxes on the second list I posted. I am not trying to scare anyone, just wanted to make you aware.

~~*Missi*~~ replied:
the one with the SunnyD Jammers Tropicana Right??? just making sure i read the right list.... sabrina nor anyone here drinks that stuff.....

BAC'sMom replied: Kool-Aid Jammers (juice boxes)
Sunny D (there are about 6 different kinds)
Tampico (is a citrus type drink)

I have let my children drink Sunny D before, but you can bet your sweet bippy they are NOT now. Not until they have some further information.

ashtonsmama replied: :bigthink:

Jeez. Can't believe that's legal.

YUCKY STUFF.

redchief replied:
According to what I've read, none of the large soft drink manufacturers were aware of the problem when the FDA approved the formulation. They have been working with the FDA to get a new formula approved for their citrus drinks.

luvbug00 replied: First off did that first link say squash juice?? ewww and Oh dear because we live off jusce boxes and kool aid jammers! ohmy.gif

holley79 replied: bigthink.gif bigthink.gif Makes you wonder huh?
