Training Wheels?
MommyToAshley wrote: What age do you think about taking the training wheels off the bicycle? Ashley has gotten pretty good on her bicycle with the training wheels, but I think she is too young to try without them. Just curious what the "average" age is ... maybe I am being over-protective? I know a lot depends on the person's skills, but I think I was around 5 or 6 when I took my training wheels off. (Of course that's a long time to remember back. )
mckayleesmom replied: I remember learning at 5. If you think she is confident enough then you can always start teaching her.
C&K*s Mommie replied: I have plans to start working with C this fall right around the time she turns 4. I am not sure of the average age, I tend to overlook age reccomendations anyhow. But when it turns cooler in the fall is when I plan to get started with her.
coasterqueen replied: I remember around the age of 5 or 6 having them off.
Kylie is too accident prone so this is one thing I'm going to be seriously overprotective on. They can stay on there til she goes to college!
TheOaf66 replied: the best thing to try, if you have the kind where you can raise the training wheels, keep raising them and she will have to balance the bike more and more on the two wheels so get them as high as you can and if she gets real good at it then give it a try taking the trainers off.
jcc64 replied: It's such a range- depends on the kid, depends on how often they are on a bike. B/c of where we live (on a winding mtn road) , my kids can't really just hop on a bike and ride down the street. Although my kids are EXTREMELY athletic, my middle ds didn't master a two wheeler until he was close to 8 (!) It's not like he was still riding around with training wheels, he just never rode a bike enough to master it. Once we decided he needed to learn it, it took about 1/2 to teach him. I'd say- let her lead you. Ask her if she'd like to try. God knows Ashley is able to articulate her opinions on such things.
zdk753 replied: With the boys I took their training wheels off when they were 4. They pretty much mastered it in the same day. Kailynn on the other hand is 4 now & she is still not ready for her training wheels to be taken off. I agree that it depends on the child. If you feel like Ashley is ready to try it I would.
DansMom replied: I know a 5 year old who just started riding his two-wheeler without wheels. My nephew was closer to 8. Totally depends on the physical abilities of the kid and the terrain you're riding on, I'd say.
3xsthefun replied: Kaitlynn is 6 and still has training wheels on her bike. DH tried get her ride the bike without the training wheels but she was too scared. We bought her bike for her on her 5th birthday and I don't think she has rode it but hand full of times. She just don't seem to interested in learning to ride a bike.
CantWait replied: Robbie was 5 years old when we took his off, and within a week he was doing it alone.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I would say 5-6. Tanner just got his first big boy bike this summer and is 4, so I am not anticipating him taking those things off any time soon. He's clutsy enough with them, let alone without them.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Wow, ya'll were young when you took your TWs off! I think I was close to 10! I remember being teased for it though... I think it just depends on the kid.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I think I was 7 or 8. I was too afraid.
ions_momma replied: Ion was 4, maybe 4 and a half, I dont remember exactly. He was always riding his bike, so DH decided to take of the training wheels and he learned pretty fast!
