Toys or clothes for kids at Christmas? - which would you prefer??

C&K*s Mommie wrote: Simple question: as a parent would you rather see your child receive as a Christmas gift more toys or more clothes?? We want to buy gifts for our nephews (one is 7yrs old, two are 6yrs old, and two are 20mos), but one of the 6yr olds, and his 7yr old brother have soooooo many toys (almost floor to ceiling wacko.gif ) that they are never appreciative & I would rather see them get something that they may actually use like clothes (only if their picky parents approve rolleyes.gif ). But we are at a loss as to what to do. Maybe a shopping spree for those two?? The other three brothers are easy-- so I do not mind spending time & effort into buying them gifts.

My question is what would you rather see your child have, if it is still your choice?

coasterqueen replied: If it was my choice, I'd prefer my children to get clothes. They would use clothes more than the toys and that's because they have too many that they (well just Kylie right now) don't appreciate them.

I have a niece and a nephew that are SPOILED beyond anything of what my children are. Their parents only by the brand new certain name brand clothes, any time a new toy comes out they rush them to the toy store to get it, if they buy a toy for say Kylie and their kid wants it to then they just get two of them. Those kids have EVERYTHING and 10x more. Anyways, so I get the clothes or gift certificates a lot. They NEVER appreciate any gift I give them whether it's a toy or clothes or a certificate so I get them what I want.

I say go for the clothes. It sounds like they aren't going to appreciate it whether its a toy or clothes anyways, right?

toady_buckshot_noodle replied: Personally, CLOTHES!!

My kids have too many toys too. And more still to come. I rented a storage building they have so much. I need to have a yard sale. Oh, sorry, you were'nt asking about me....LOL

What about money or gift certificates, or McDonalds bucks. It used to be that kids didn't know what they were and thought they didn't get anything but now most kids know. If it is a proble, give them a small inexpensive toy and include the gift certificate or whatever.

Just an idea. blahblah.gif

My2Beauties replied: Clothes clothes and more clothes tongue.gif Hanna doesn't fit any of her winter clothes from last year already (it's only been what 4 months since she wore that stuff)! ohmy.gif So I had to go out to Target and buy some pants and long sleeve shirts to get her by until her b'day - I told everyone that is coming to her party, no toys just clothes please! now for christmas I want help on stuff for her bedroom biggrin.gif Daddy and I have done bought her an entire wardrobe practically anyways for her b'day and so will grandma's and grandpa's laugh.gif for her b'day!

Boys r us replied: I'm bad, I'd rather them get something they'd enjoy and neither of my kids enjoy clothes as gifts blush.gif Maybe an educational toy.

MomToMany replied: Definitely clothes. I want my kids to learn that Christmas just isn't about toys. I'd rather spend the day together doing a fun activity than seeing them open presents thast will probably be broken by the end of the day anyway rolleyes.gif .

luvbug00 replied: CLOTHES!!!

mckayleesmom replied: I like a little of both.

MyLuvBugs replied: Clothes. Although I know she's going to get a ton of toys, and we don't have ANY space for them. Some might end up on ebay. UGH. But try telling the grandparents not to buy things. It's nearly impossible.

C&K*s Mommie replied: GREAT responses from everyone!!! THANKS!!! By the sounds of it, most think clothes are the most ideal. So taking hints from each of you, I think now we might do the McD's gift certificates, a new outift or two, and maybe a small gift. Although we have to keep each kids budget under $30.

I wish for our kids to learn the same lesson, too.

kimberley replied: clothes!!

half the time people buy toys the kids play with for 5min and toss in the toy box forever. i'd rather get them the stuff i know they want and have others buy stuff like books, videos, clothes, etc

JAYMESMOM replied: I prefer clothes, books, or DVDS over toys. They will get more use out of them as they already have so many toys.

In my family my mom and grandma buy clothes for the kdis and my DHs side buys toys so it balances out.

My siblings buy whatever I tell them the kids needs usually a new DVD or books

~Roo'sMama~ replied: Well this being Andrew's first Christmas, he could actually use both. He'll be 6 months old by then and he doesn't have any toys for that age yet. And he's growing out of his clothes faster than I can put them on him. rolleyes.gif

But, for this year anyways I think I'd rather he get toys. tongue.gif I can borrow clothes for him from my sisters but toys are expensive! wink.gif

A&A'smommy replied: toys I'm REALLY picky about clothes so I prefer people NOT to buy my child clothes I'm so weird blush.gif

3xsthefun replied: Clothes!

My girls have way to many toys as it is!

~KARA~ replied:

ME TOO my family is pretty good at clothes buying my in laws are just idiots when it comes to it!

MommyToAshley replied:
I have to agree with Nicole. I like clothes for Ashley, but she'd probably prefer toys or some kind of craft item she could do. Educational toys are always good... both parents and kids like them! thumb.gif Here's a link that might help you find toys by age groups:

Jamison'smama replied: I buy as gifts and would prefer to receive "experiences" Zoo passes, Children's Museum memberships, movie passes, YMCA gift cards for swim class etc. That way the kids love it--eventually and the parents are usually grateful too!

my2monkeyboys replied: I suggest something along the lines of a "family" gift, as mentioned above... zoo passes, tickets to the movies, things like that. Or even open a savings account for the kids. It think it is typically $10-$25 minimum to open one though, so that might get a little pricey if you do an individual account for each child, depending on how much you normally spend on them. I think though that kids generally like toys more than clothes, unless there is some particular garment a kid wants that his parents haven't bought yet.
Just my thoughts.
Good luck with that! laugh.gif
