Tofu?
mysweetpeasWil&Wes wrote: Okay, judging from what you all say about your DHs, most (not all) seem like "meat and potato" type of guys...but I'm curious, will your DH eat an ALL veggie meal if you made it and put it infront of him?? I make tofu stir-fry at least once a month, and sometimes I make a baked eggplant parm (no meat), but although DH never complains and actually likes both entrees a lot, I can tell he would prefer something with meat in it. He always seems to snack after I make a vegetarian meal. It's like they can't be full unless it has meat in it!
Just curious...what does your DH do if you try tofu on him? Or what would he do?
moped replied: He would not likely eat it!
mom2patrick&jalin replied: My DH will try anything once but I do not like tofu so he does not have to worry.
5littleladies replied: My hubby probably wouldn't eat it. He is the same way as yours-If there isn't meat in a meal he can't get full. At least that is what he says.
Twelve Volt Man replied: What would I do if my wife tried to feed me tofu? As Tammy Wynette sang, D-I-V-O-R-C-E! Perhaps there's a reason I do most of the cooking.
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Aaron would make a chicken quesadilla.
kit_kats_mom replied: we try to have at least two no meat meals per week. Spaghetti, stir fry, eggs and pancakes, beans, etc. We have tofu at least once every other week. We love it (especially Lauren who will eat an entire brick of the stuff). My Dh would prefer meat but he knows that meat is expensive (he's being a miser lately) and not very good for him so he's ok with it.
Wanna swap recipes? Mine is simple: firm tofu cut into triangles. I marinate it in grated ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil and sesame seeds. Then I brown it in sesame oil and serve it over either brown rice or bulgar with a veggie on the side. I call it "golden triangles of love". LOL
gr33n3y3z replied: He would prolly try it me on the other hand wouldnt lol But for him to replace that with meat everyday or even just 2 or 3 times a week it wouldnt happen
A&A'smommy replied: My husband does NOT like veggies at all... about the only kind he will eat is corn and very rarely.... I on the other hand would rather have a vegetarian meal
Calimama replied: He would def. eat it. He'll likes just about everything and will at least TRY everything once.
kimberley replied: mine would go make peanut butter sandwiches or starve before eating tofu lol.
My3LilMonkeys replied: Meals with no meat he's okay with once a week or so. Tofu? Not so much. He'd be ordering a pizza.
luvmykids replied: Dh's motto is....if there's no meat, it's not a meal He even complains if there's no meat in spaghetti sauce
Although, if I make a pot of beans or posole and some red chile he won't complain. He'd eat that for days
MoonMama replied: Alec would eat it and not say a word. He knows the other option is having to feed himself.
Jamison'smama replied: I've never tried it on him. I do meatless meals alot though---we do breakfast for dinner or a wonderful 3 cheese manicotti.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Yum, your's sounds so much yummier than mine, but Wil is allergic to seeds, so no sesame seeds or sesame oil. I just throw broccoli, carrots, onion, bean pods, snap peas and water chestnuts in a pan and saute. Then cube the tofu and throw that in until lightly brown. Add some wheat free tamari and cook through. Serve with either brown or white rice. Pretty easy. Made it last night as a matter of fact, that's why I asked. DH had a late meeting, so he told me he grabbed a burrito on the way home!!! A part of me thinks he somehow knew it was tofu night! My kids like it too though.
Cece00 replied: My husband would not eat it.
Then again, neither would I Tofu just does not seem appetizing to me.
NaturalMom replied: not a chance. i dont like tofu at all either but i have had some recipes with it and it was good. He wont have it tho. lol he is such a picky eater!
jcc64 replied: We eat it ALL the time, and I can't for the life of me understand why it freaks so many people out. What's weird about it? It's got an incredibly mild flavor- almost none at all, actually, and if you can make good casseroles, chile, stir fries, burritos, tacos, even milkshakes and smoothies, then you can integrate tofu into your family's diet. My dh grew up eating tofu b/c he's Korean, but we started eating it years ago when we became vegetarians. We are no longer veggies (just got too lazy, frankly), but we still eat alot of tofu. You guys don't know what you're missing. Cary- if your kids like tofu, a good snack is to breaded tofu sticks. Cut the tofu into long, fish stick like shapes, coat in egg, then fine breadcrumbs (can season with parmesan), spray a cookie sheet with nonstick oil, and bake until golden. My kids used to love that when they were little.
lovemy2 replied: My DH would -
I like it but really have no idea how to cook it or make it good - got any good easy recipes for it???
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I agree Jeanne, what's so weird about it guys? I actually love it, but just don't make it that often since my DH is a big meat eater and I do most of the cooking. He grew up with hippie parents who owned a health food store, so he is used to it, but he really likes his steaks too!
Yeah, all of you who say you've never tried it, give it a shot! I can literally eat it plain right out of the package. And I like your breadcrumb recipe Jeanne, I'm going to try that one on the kids. They like anything in a stick shape!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Well, he would look at me like I had 3 heads.
I personally don't think it's weird at all. I'm about to start cooking with tofu a lot. Now that I'm on my health kick (trying to integrate the whole family in this as well) I need more ideas for healthier things. Meat is just too heavy sometimes. I'm not going vegetarian, but I will eat a lot less meat and poultry.
I'm hoping DH tries it and gets on board w/me. The kids don't have a choice.
kit_kats_mom replied: That sounds YUMMY Jeanne! Thanks. We will have that for lunch next week.
I was wondering why so many people were freaked out by tofu too. It's not like it's bugs or something. It's similar to peanut butter in the items in it. Soybeans with very little flavor. It really just takes on the flavor of whatever you are serving with it. We use the silken tofu to thicken smoothies and milkshakes, we use the firm as a meat substitute and marinate it usually and we use the TVP (Textured vegitable protein, which some people call tofu too) in heavily flavored meat dishes that call for ground beef like tacos & burritos and chili. That TVP is such a convincing ground beef substitute, that my DH had no idea that I had been using it for Burritos for the whole first year we were married. He thought it was ground beef the whole time. I wouldnt' use it for like meatloaf though because it really has no flavor.
I think that maybe some of the "fear of tofu" may have to do with it's link to the "hippy dippy health food" stuff.
Yall don't know what you are missing.
luvmykids replied: I don't have a fear of it or think weirdly of it, just haven't experimented with it aside from the fact DH wouldn't eat it. If I snuck it in like you did he would, but knowingly he wouldn't go for it.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I'm not sure it's that, because being healthy is everywhere these days, but I sure think anything with the word "curd" in it is pretty freaky sounding!
Tonight I'm making baked eggplant parm with no meat. DH loves it!
PrairieMom replied: Actually in our house, DH would be the one willing to eat tofu, and I would opt out for cereal for dinner.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I'm afraid to find out!
I on the other hand don't mind it depending on how it's made. It takes on the flavor of whatever you cook/make with it, so as long as it's made with something I like, I'm ok with it.
TheOaf66 replied: I do believe the term "going postal" would come into play. I have had it, didn't care for it, she can eat it till the sun goes down for all I care but it is just not for me...and to even put the idea of "sneaking" it into the food is just plain horrible...that is where fights start and marriages end...all thanks to TOFU
holley79 replied: Shawn is a I"ll try anything kind of guy. He will eat veggie burgers and stuff like that. Me I refuse.
Cece00 replied: It just looks nasty. And I tried it once & thought it was gross. It couldve been the way it was cooked, but frankly, I love REAL food (meat, veggies, etc) and I'll stick with that. It just has no appealing qualities to it. Sort of like rhubarb, for example. I bet its fine if its cooked certain ways...but its not remotely appealing to me. So I'll skip it. Lots of other things in the world for me to eat.
Also- just curious....isnt it dangerous (or they think it may be dangerous...) to eat too much soy? Does that not apply to tofu? I admit I dont know too much about tofu, just that it is made from soy.
jcc64 replied: Tofu is "real food", hon. People have been eating it all over the world for hundreds of years. And I haven't heard a word about tofu or soy being 'dangerous'. Definitely not the case with meat, which is universally known to have all sorts of qualities compromising to one's health. I want to emphasize that I am not a vegetarian, nor am I anti-meat- I love a good burger or steak too. But, with all the hormones, antibiotics, unsanitary slaughter house conditions, and the ill effects of saturated animal fats, it's kind of hard to enjoy it with a clean conscience- and I'm talking purely from a health standpoint. Hey Cary- have you ever tried tempeh? I LOVE that- it really does have a flavor- kind of nutty- and I prefer to use that in stir fries b/c it doesn't crumble so easily.
