The Golden Compass (movie) - sorry if already posted.

This is copy and pasted so just know that these are not my words.

----------------------------------

It's called The Golden Compass

BEWARE about a movie coming out soon.

You may already know about this, but I just learned about a kids movie coming out in December starring Nicole Kidman. It's called "The Golden Compass", and while it will be a watered down version, it is based on a series of children's books about KILLING GOD -- It is the anti-Narnia.

Please follow the link below, and then pass it on.

From what I understand, the hope is to get a lot of kids to see the movie -- which won't seem too bad -- and then get the parents to buy the books for their kids for Christmas. The quotes from the author sum it all up. I'm going to tell everyone about this movie. I hope it totally bombs because we were all paying attention!

PrairieMom replied: Wow. Thanks for putting this out there. I had no idea. My kids are to young for it, but I was planning on watching it when it comes out on PPV.

Cece00 replied: I've seen a couple of trailers, I see nothing wrong with the movie. I wont see it, but mostly because I think those types of movies (spirit animals, fantasy, sorcery, etc) are kind of stupid. My kids wont see it because they are too young to see it, not because of the theme.

Then again, we arent religious, which may be why I think this is no big deal. There are other movies/books that do promote christianity, I guess someone else is entitled to do the opposite.

Although I must say, even though I've never read the book, I didnt get one ounce of "atheism" from what I've seen.

lisar replied: I actually saw a special on TV about this. Kinda weird to me.

There's a news story on Fox about it.

PrairieMom replied:
Thats true. I don't have a problem with them making movies, I'm just glad I read this so I don't personally waste my $ watching it. Just because it's not for me doesn't mean it isn't for someone. wink.gif

luvbug00 replied: ITA with both opinions

ITA with both of you...and my problem isn't with the authors point of view, he's totally entitled to it. I just don't happen to embrace it.

eta: FWIW, it's not just religious groups that have an issue with it, a lot of people just feel the basic premise is too "dark" for kids. I also read a review of the books and circumcision and female genital mutilation is mentioned. Doesn't sound like a childrens series I'd read to my kids (or want them to read).

See I like playing games with those types of things

redchief replied: As with most subversive advertising campaigns, the problem with this movie is in the billing. It's true that Christian themes are often part of film, but there's no masking the intent. In this film, the producers have carefully watered down the "God-killing" aspect of the books, and are thoroughly advertising the movie as fantasy, even though the author has publicly stated that the object of the books are to support his atheistic views and to destroy God and spirituality. OK, so you may still argue that the movie is harmless. My position is that, given the watered down theological position put forth in the movie, many parents will not see the harm in buying the books. Parents should be informed is all I'm saying.

I don't care how many awards this trash has won, and I hope the movie loses so much money as to make the producers bankrupt.

Crystalina replied:
That was my point also. Parents may see the movie and think nothing of buying the trilogy of books. Then the kids are reading it (more then likely the parents won't) and the kids are reading all of his atheist points of view. Apparently they are saying these books will be flying off the shelves by Christmas and compared it to "not unlike the Harry Potter frenzy". We all know kids loved those books and I would just hate for parents who do not agree with this man to unknowingly purchase and hand these books to their kids or other kids. If you're into his way of thinking then go for it is what I say but if you aren't you should be aware of the main reason the movie is being put out and from what I've read it's to sell the books.

Calimama replied:
I totally agree!!

Boo&BugsMom replied:
My thoughts exactly.

A&A'smommy replied: I will definitely NOT be watching this movie!!! Thanks for the information!!
