The Gall, Mr. President! - Warning: Fly death mentioned
redchief wrote: All right, I'm all for the ethical treatment of animals and all, but come on! This is absolutely ridiculous!
I'm no great fan of President Obama, but I see no reason he has to sit still as a fly annoys him. I think they're asking for it sometimes. At least it shows the president is not a greater form of human... he's just one of us. He's quick too.
If anyone wants to see our Commander-in-Chief perform the fly execution, here's a link (WARNING, graphically depicted death of a fly): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rbUH_iVjYw
Kentuckychick replied: Yeah... I'd like to meet ONE peta member who makes friends with the misquitoes that bite them every summer.
I for one found it hilarious... just like the whole interview stops because of the annoying fly -- it's so life.
It's the ethical treatment of animals... not annoying insects.
Celestrina replied:
Oh COME ON! I don't see what the big deal was in the first place. So what? he killed a fly! It's not like he killed a panda. I don't see why the news kept mentioning it past that day. Yes, it was funny, but isn't there more important things going on it the world than the president swatting a fly?
Kentuckychick replied: LMAO at the picture!!!
And no of course not!... nothing more important at all... no economic crisis or wars to worry about here
Gosh when the biggest concern in the country is the president killing a fly I'll think my lucky stars!!!
CantWait replied: Some people just have nothing better to do
A&A'smommy replied: ROFL that is flipping hilarious!! PETA is SO out of control they are LOOKING for stuff to get riled up about
Crystalina replied: I really hope PETA is NOT wasting their time on this. There are REAL animals being tortured out there in the world and IMO this would take away from that. I'm not a PETA follower by any means but I applaud what they do and this just makes a joke of them...IMO.
I saw the video a few days ago and even though it is far from newsworthy I don't think it hurts to show something like this when there is so much death, violence and war on t.v.
jcc64 replied: I kind of have mixed feelings about PETA--I think any group can b/c single-minded and ridiculously unreasonable at times, as PETA surely has in the past, which is a shame b/c it obscures the necessary and valuable work that they do. If I read the article correctly, the media contacted PETA looking for a comment on "the incident," not the other way around. When forced to say something, of course a PETA rep is gonna say something along the lines of what was said. But this seems to be a case of the media being, uh, bored, and looking for a way to stir up the pot, which evidently, worked.
DVFlyer replied: While I think this is ridiculous, just to stir the pot...
What is the difference between killing a fly and killing a Panda? They are both creatures of earth.
jcc64 replied: Aside from the cuteness factor, maybe the difference is that pandas can't fly around my head and annoy me???????
Calimama replied: I'm more impressed with his fly killing skills!
Crystalina replied: I guess the difference would be that there are WAY more flys then pandas. If pandas were a dime a dozen like flys they would more then likely be able to be purchased in our local Wal-Marts meat/panda section.
redchief replied: Pandas are endangered and do not pose a public health risk. Flies will never make the endangered list and will probably still be around when we're extinct and transmit all sorts of diseases.
Sadly, this story is causing dissension among the PETA ranks. I'm sorry, but I just can't help snickering every time I see that video..., "Got the sucker." Crystal and Jeanne, I agree with you that PETA has done a lot of good regarding the ethical treatment of animals, but they do tend to go a bit overboard. For instance, they were instrumental in getting legislation passed in several large Caliberalfonia cities, removing the word "owner" from in front of "pet" and replacing it with the word "guardian." While I agree that people who mistreat animals should have them removed from their care, they aren't independent spirits. We're expected to control our pets as we are any other possession.
PETA's "bloodbaths" targeting the fur industry were powerful, bright and courageous. Their support of Greenpeace efforts to save sea mammals shows that they're also willing to take their fight globally. But even absolute advocates should choose their battles carefully. I'd venture there aren't many PETA sponsors who haven't broke out the old flyswatter at least once in their lives.
Kentuckychick replied: Did you know that flies vomit every time they land... EVERY time.
Did you know I killed a fly yesterday for trying to land on my dinner plate?
Nough said.
jcc64 replied:
ITA 100%. Having said that, I do believe this particular battle was sort of chosen for them. The media sought them out for a comment, not vice versa, and aside from saying "No comment," I don't know how differently it could have turned out. Animal rights people say stuff like that.
Mommy2Isabella replied: I love how he says "Got the Sucker" ...
redchief replied: Hmm... They could have just said that they are opposed to the destruction of any form of animal life. Sending a "humane fly trap" probably added to the ridiculousness and absurdity of their position.
I wonder what the President and Bobby Flay did to protect the White House Fathers Day BBQ from the "suckers."
DVFlyer replied: I keep thinking about this...
My2Beauties replied: DV....LMAO LMAO LMAO
Ok seriously, I thought the vid was hilarious, seriously hilarious.
