Swollen Ankles

Maddie&EthansMom wrote: My ankles are soooooo swollen. I do not even recognize my own feet. Does this mean there is something wrong? Is it a symptom? I did not have this with Maddie and normally I have really thin ankles and feet. You can't even see the bone and they look like they could explode. It is so embarassing. Is there anything I can do? I have been on my feet a lot today and they hurt, but they started hurting this morning. Ugh!!

Kaitlin'smom replied: oh ya i had this mine was nothing seroius but do mention to your ob so they can check and make sure your BP is ok. the only thing I could do to relieve the pain of it was drink about a gallon of water, I know it sounds weird since its water your retaing and it has no where else to go but it did work for me and I had to elevate my legs all the time when sitting. The only draw back to all the water is i was going to the bathroom every 1/2 hour! ohmy.gif Oh and I could only wear sandles my feet would not fit into anything else! It was terribel sandles in the winter with snow! ohmy.gif Hope you find some relief...

Kirstenmumof3 replied: grouphug.gif Oh I feel so bad for you! I had this so bad when I was pregnant with Emily that my feet swelled a whole size and the swelling didn't go down until about 2 weeks after she was born. I used to be a size 7 and since I've had Emily I'm a 7 1/2 wide! I was always told to elevate my feet with pillows, try that and maybe don't be on your feet so much tomorrow! grouphug.gif

MommyToAshley replied: I had this happen to me about a week before Ashley was born and it lasted until about 2-3 weeks after she was born.

I agree that you should have your BP checked just to be cautious.

My Doc also told me to drink water, elevate my legs and watch the amount of salt I was eating.

A&A'smommy replied: omg okay first of all i have REALLY skinny feet too and long skinny toes (dancer feet biggrin.gif ) anyways right around my 7 month my feet started swelling especially when i was on my feet a lot and at the end OMG they were huge didnt even look like my feet!!! if you get a chance soak them in cold water (or warm whichever you think would feel better) it might make them feel better and make sure to drink lots of water and when they get to swollen and they hurt you real bad just stop what your doing (if thats possible its hard when your a mom) sit down and elevate your feet you will probably feel ten times better!!! but no its probably nothing just part of being pg for some of us anyways....i hope your feet quit hurting you i feel bad for you those last months are horrible (and really special rolleyes.gif ) ((((HUGS))))

paradisemommy replied: yep..i know all too well the swelling! mine started about 7 months too and lasted until a couple weeks after i gave birth. i tried elevating them all day, but to no avail - nothing seemed to work - i even went and bought those diabetic socks (really tight) thinking THAT might help but NOPE..sorry can only give you big hugs.. grouphug.gif grouphug.gif (one for each foot)...but hang in there - it won't be long now...

oh what did help me was foot massages - even though they totally hurt to be touched and squeezed..it was a good pain though..kinda like a deep tissue massage but you have to be careful not to touch the area in the back of your feet - if you do, that may put you in labor..i had a wonderful dh laugh.gif

amynicole21 replied: Mine were swollen every second of the last 4 months of my pregnancy sad.gif They looked like sausages, and they swelled out around the straps on my sandles. It was so gross. I would wear capri pants during the day, and by the time I went to take them off at night they wouldn't budge around my calves... dh would have to help. blush.gif

Drink lots of water, keep them elevated, and try not to spend too long sitting - get up and walk around the house every half hour or so. I hope yours don't get as bad as mine did!!

aspenblue1 replied: Mine were swollen terrible. I would have you BP checked and limit salt and drink lots of water.

jen replied: I haven't had this problem yet........but I do get sore feet and I have found that steaming hot water and epsom salt works for me. Maybe they don't swell because of the epsom salt because it helps with circulation. Try filling your bath up with hot water 1/4 of the way and dropping a couple cups of epsom salt in there and soaking them. HTH! grouphug.gif

coasterqueen replied: Mine got swollen too blush.gif Just keep your feet up as much as possible, drink lots of water (not what a pg women wants to do, lol) and I would call your doc to get your bp checked too wink.gif

DansMom replied: I looked like the Michelen man throughout my last trimester. I had to purchase new shoes---clogs with an open heel, two sizes larger than my normal size. I have a theory that it started about when Daniel dropped lower into my pelvis, so that there was more pressure reducing the circulation in my legs.

Maddie&EthansMom replied:

You're so smart! That is when it started!! When it got harder for me to walk b/c he is so low!! tongue.gif I bet that is why all the swelling lately. Plus, it has been pretty painful all around...my back, belly, hips, etc. Oh the joys!!
