Surgery Update *LONG*
sunrosejenn wrote: Eliana and I arrived at the hospital at 5:53am yesterday. Surgery was scheduled for 7:30am. (I saw this on the papers when I got to the hospital) My friend’s mom went with us as I was too much of a wreck to drive. While nurses came in and out of the room with papers to fill out and questions to ask. Eliana was getting a wagon ride up and down the hall ways. At 7:10am they gave her some Versed to make her calm and sleepy. About 5 minutes later she was SO out of it.
At 7:20am they took her into the OR. There was NO way she was going to lie on a bed and be wheeled away. The nurse just walked with her. She took her Pooh blanket with her and was fine. Of course Mommy was a total wreck once she walked away. Now the sitting in the waiting room seemed forever. The nurse said she would let me know when surgery started.
I sat and sat and waited and waited. I kept looking at the clock and the nurse hadn’t said anything. I was starting to feel sick to my stomach. The nurse finally came over and said they had started it was 8:10am at this point. The DR came out at 8:50 and Eliana was on the way to recovery. Eliana came out of recovery at 9:10am.
I was SO freaked at this point and trembling. Hospitals and IV’s scare the %$@& out of me. And to see Eliana laying there with an IV just made my heart drop. She was in and out of sleep for awhile. And when she was awake she was made as hell. They said they would take the IV out as soon as she drank some liquids and kept them down. Eliana kept trying to take the IV out herself. And of course got mad when she could as she was all taped up.
Finally she got some liquids in her and the IV came out. One of the nurses on the floor who wasn’t even her nurse brought her a stuffed puppy. After her nurse took the IV out I gave her the puppy and she just hugged it to pieces and wouldn’t let go. So we waited to get discharged and finally went home. Not sure what time it was exactly.
Cat (thank you) had called at about 8am and of course I was in a black hole in the hospital so it went to voicemail. A little while later I was in a good spot and it said I had a new message. Left Cat a message. I called Cat about 10 minutes after I put her down to bed and she slept for 4 hours. I slept some but not enough.
Claire, I was sleeping when you called. Thank you. I called back but it went to voicemail. But as I was leaving a message the phone was acting funny. So, I hope you got the message. I was going to call back again but it totally slipped my mind and I was SO tired.
Eliana was quite grouchy after she woke up but that was to be expected. She felt much better when we went for a walk outside after dinner. She LOVES being outside. She did throw up once when we were almost back home from the walk. And she was fine after that.
My friend’s mom kept her today to keep an eye on her. She is not allowed to rub her eyes for 2 days (yesterday and today). And the sitter has 4 other kids to watch so that wouldn’t have been easy for her to watch for. I did call Sarah to see how she was doing this morning. She was asleep when I dropped her off. She woke up on her own and was happy. Eliana ate some oatmeal and was playing when I called.
Sarah said that she is fine and is acting like something happened yesterday. This is great. I don’t want her to remember this event. I heard her playing in the background and she was not crying. I feel a bit better knowing she is not grouchy or acting weird today. I’m certainly glad it is done and over with now.
Her eyes are bloodshot and it makes me queasy to look at them. They will get back to normal in 2 weeks. It’ll be about a month before we know if the surgery is going to work for her. What the DR did was manipulate both eye muscles. And Eliana has to learn to use both eyes together. As before she was using her good eye alone. Please pray that she learns to use them together.
I forgot the pics at home this morning. I feel like a zombie today or really hungover LOL. I will go home for lunch and get the pics. I will post them this afternoon.
Thanks girls for all your support!

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Kids are amazingly resiliant. And versed acts as an amnesiac as well as making kids loopy. So she won't ever remember a thing about the hospital trip. I am glad to hear that Eliana had a good day. I hope that the rest of the week and her recovery period are as smooth.

hawkshoe replied: Reading your post brought back a flood of memories. My son went through that surgery when he was 1 1/2. I remember when I first saw him in the hospital. He was crying with IV tubes in him too. I held him and got queezy when the nurse put medication in his IV. I actually had to give him to my dh and go in another room and lay down for fear of passing out. He kept calling for me and I could do nothing buy lay there. My heart broke. His eyes were bloodshot too and he had a bubble over one which was really bloody (he had a lid lifted as well) and I too would get queezy looking at it. Thankfully once we got him home, he was fine. He is now almost 5 and while his eyes are not 100% corrected, they are definately much better than they were. He still uses them independantly instead of together and has a small amount of drifting from time to time, but all in all, I would say it was a success. I hope your daughter continues to progress well.
