Spent the night in E.R.

MommyToAshley wrote: At Ashley's birthday party, MIL was watching Ashley eat her cake while I cut the cake for everyone else. When I was done, I went over to where she was, and saw that her plastic spoon had a big piece missing out of it. (It had to be a sharp piece too) She seemed to be ok, she was acting fine, talking and eating fine, but we couldn't find the piece that was broken off. We weren't sure if she ate it or not. So, we just kept an eye on her.

After we got home and Ashley was playing with her toys, DH comes to me and says that she finally poopoo'd. (She hadn't gone yet for the day so I had been giving her lots of water, juice, and fruit because I thought she might be constipated) When I went to change her diaper, there was blood all over her buns and on the stools. (sorry, tmi). That scared both DH and I, so we took her to the ER at Children's Hospital. The doc did an exam and said that there was a tear from where she passed a big stool (sorry tmi) and that was probably what caused the bleeding. They did an X-Ray just to be sure... and everything looked ok, except that she is constipated. The piece of spoon didn't show up in the X-Rays (they said it might not show up), but the doc said that if she did swallow the piece of spoon, it will be safe for her to pass. I am still not convinced that she swallowed the piece of spoon because she usually spits out anything that she doesn't like. But, who knows.

Well... we almost made it the first 2 years without going to the E.R.

On a side note, she had a great time at the party. I will post pictures and more about the party in another post. But, I think I am going to take a nap while Ashley is sleeping (we didn't get back from the ER until 2am)

Jamison'smama replied: Poor baby girl! Glad she is okay. I bet she didn't swallow the plastic---but I know I'd be worried! Hope she enjoyed her cake and her birthday! Did you take your camera to the ER? I forgot mine during Jamison's first visit--you know, worried about the child and all smile.gif Hope you get some sleep today!

MomToJade&Jordan replied: Poor Ashley. grouphug.gif I would have been at the ER too. We did have to go when Jade was only 6 weeks old. She was having a problem keeping her food down. At the time it was just BM, but that was pretty scary. I'm glad that Ashley was able to enjoy her birthday party. I hope her bottom is feeling better.

Lollie replied: Awww...poor little darling!!!Sending a hug to both of you!!!Im so glas thats shes ok!! thumb.gif I would have also gotten a scare!!! blush.gif

amynicole21 replied: OMG, poor Ashley! That happened to Sophia once before... it's terrifying! I'm glad you got it checked out and that the docs didn't think it was serious. Poor baby. I'm glad she had fun at her party though! Happy Belated Bday Ashely!

Alice replied: Man, I hate those ER visits!!!

We had to take Julia when she was about 20 months... she had swallowed a quarter. She was breathing OK but kept throwing up. After 3 hours, the ped. said to take her to the ER. They did X-rays, and could even see the ridges of the quarter. It was a long 6 weeks before it passed.

Then, this past Mother's Day, we had to take Kira. She had bumped into a glider at my mom's house-- my sister picked her up and dusted her off and we thought nothing of it. (I have a huge family, so kids falling are not a big deal.) Until she started throwing up-- over and over and over again (and all over me each time dry.gif . Thank God another sister still lives at home and has lots of T shirts, and mom's washer is industrial strength!) It turns out that she got a bump on the head, followed by a nasty stomach bug. OF course, it took a CT scan to determine it.

The reason I mention all that is that somehow I feel guilty each time I run to the ER, even though I know it's dumb!!! Accidents are called that for a reason... we can't surround our kids in protection and expect them to grow.

lsjulee replied: Oh my!! ohmy.gif Poor Ashley grouphug.gif Sorry she has to spend a night in E.R. on her birthday party. sad.gif Sending lots of get well vibes to her.
