Solved the Birthday Party problem
MamaJAM wrote: As some of you know - our party idea was 'stolen'. DD#3 was going to have her party at a pottery painting place -- then got an invitation from a classmate for the same party only a few weeks before her scheduled date. The kids would get too unruley doing the same thing so close together (trust me...I know this group of kids well).
DH and I have been racking our brains for days now - but found something that DD is excited about.
I found a 'science guy' who does parties. He's going to do a show about 'light and colors' -- making indoor 'fireworks' (burning different colored metals to make different colored light) - showing the kids how lightbulbs work - etc. At the end of the show - the kids will all make their own 'slime' to take home. Since there's no way we can do this at our home -- I called the girls' school this morning and reserved the all-purpose room there for the party. Should be a lot of fun.

MamaJAM replied: Actually - I have to admit...I can't wait until she's a little older and has a few really close friends so we can stop these 'big' parties. My oldest was in public school at this age and we did SMALL parties for her with just the few kids she actually knew pretty well. DD#2 was in this same school in 1st grade...but the largest her class ever was was 10 kids...we've been able to 'get away' with less-exciting parties (though this past year we did a hayride...which was a lot of fun). This particular class (DD#3's class) is not only the largest (down to 18 now -- but was 25 in PK)....but they all do something - usually 'big' - for parties...and they invite the whole class. While that might not be much of a problem for some of the families...those of us on a tight budget have some problems. Actually - the main reason we're able to do a little 'more' for her this year is because my parents said they'd pay for her party (we just need to do paper-supplies, food, and grab-bags). Last year we teamed up with another family - and did a joint party...but that wasn't going to work out this year. Even this is a fairly 'toned down' party compared to some -- like the family who hires a petting zoo and pony ride and caterer to come to their house every year -- thankfully it's really not as expensive as other places I called.
