Soda at preschool.
PrairieMom wrote: So after my question earlier in the week about who old you kids are before you give them soda, I learned that they gave Ben soda at snack time at school. WHat is wrong with these people? The school provides the snacks, and has always done a good job. Htey usually have something like pretzles and milk, but yesterday was the assistant teachers birthday, and she brought snacks. Ben was so antsy after school that he couldn't sit still at the table to eat his lunch. (he is pretty sensitive to sugar) I knew right away that he had something unusual for snack. I babysat a girl in his class yesterday afternoon too, adn she was off the walls too. Her mom was not impressed when I told her why. She is going to say something to the teacher next week. Really, who gives soda to a room full of 3 year olds?
luvmykids replied: The twins' school actually sends home permission slips for special snack times, when we took cupcakes for their bdays they sent them too. I took cherry 7up, thinking since it was caffeine free it would be ok and both teachers said "Uh, no, we have juice in the storeroom"
DillsMommy replied: Hmmm... I agree, I think 3 is a little too young for soda. And why would they give it to them at preschool, surely they have to know that some parents would not want their 3 year old having soda.
lisar replied: Lexi's teacher always ask if its okay or not. They do have juice, water, and milk though.
PrairieMom replied: Poor Ben is going to be so picked on. I'm gonna be the mom that brings string cheese and crackers or apple slices for snacks.
julesmom replied: Wow! Soda?!
My dd's prek offers only juice or water. She said most days they only offer water.
In her school, no sweets or cupcakes allowed. No cupcakes is alittle extreme, imho.
But soda? I'd be furious!
stella6979 replied: Dumb, dumb, dumb. That's really all that came to mind after reading that.
grapfruit replied: No offense for the people that drink a lot of pop, but it's just not good for you. Why would they think it'd be ok?? There are people that are practically addicted to pop...Maybe you should load him up on it and then send him to school, maybe they'll think twice next time.
Cece00 replied: I'd probably be upset, too. There is no reason to have soda. What's wrong with milk, water, or even juice?
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I would have been pretty upset too.
Heck, my kids even drink their juice watered down about half.
Calimama replied: Why would they offer soda to PRESCHOOLERS, without asking permission of the parents first? Now I see what I have to look forward to.
C&K*s Mommie replied: Frankly, it was a one time thing. Talk to the teacher, and it will be a lesson learned, that you would prefer your preschooler not to have sugar sodas. It is really nothing to be furious over if it was a one time event.
inmom2two replied: Who would do that? The same person who would send Twinkies to preschool as a 10AM snack for 3yo's I am so thankful that our school now has a healthy snack policy. There is a very short list of approved things to bring for snack. You know what? The kids LOVE getting popcorn, fruit, cheese, crackers and real juice (not HI-C, etc) to eat. I'd be very mad, but would definately mention it to the teacher once you calm down.
jcc64 replied: There really is no reason for kids to be drinking soda. Having said that, I think I'd be a little aggravated at a no cupcake for birthdays policy. It's a staple of childhood, imo.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: That's Crazy! At my childrens school they have vending machines, but all you can buy is juice! In Claudias JK class you have to provide healthy snacks and there lunches have to be healthy lunches-no cookies, granola bars dipped in chocolate, no pudding. So sometimes we send her with cherrios and money for milk!
CantWait replied: Nice
hawkshoe replied: I wouldn't be happy about that. I would not make a big deal about it, but I would let the teacher know that it was not acceptable to give soda to my child.
gr33n3y3z replied: The kids themselves started to bring in soda for lunch and they nipped that in the butt fast and told them its no longer allowed.
As far as what we serve just as long as the first ingredant isnt sugar we can serve it by state law.
As for cupcakes go they allow that for parties
A&A'smommy replied: uh yeah that was pretty crazy!!!
redchief replied: Lisa comes home and complains to me about the garbage some parents send to school with their children. They work hard to ensure a balanced, high energy meal, and the brown-baggers bring Lunchables, candy and other nonmeals. I suggested at the beginning of the year that the menu might be a little eclectic for some of the kids' tastes (their cafeteria chef is a real world class chef and you wouldn't believe what he makes for those kids from state supplied food-stuff), and I suggested perhaps a simple sandwich choice daily along with the regular menu. They instituted that at the beginning of the year and the lunch counts have gone up by 15 - 20%. It's just an idea that seems to be working well here, and gets the kids eating healthier.
