So sad when i heard this on the news.
mummy2girls wrote: I was driving to work and on the radio i heard this.... A perfectly healthy 22 month old girl died in Calgary. They think she had a severe reaction to the flu shot. Her brain was so swelled and she had seizures. And the doctors believe it is linked to a very severe allergic reaction to a shot. HOw sad is that? After hearing that i am not going to give jenna the flu shot.

DansMom replied: I know, it's very rare to have an allergic reaction. But if your child is the one who has the reaction, the fact that it's rare is no comfort at all. I decided not to get the shot too, but it's been tough also to hear the stories about kids dying of the flu. It's not an easy decision either way.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: None of us got the shot...and we are not planning on it. I'm a fanatic about germs when we go out... I always wiping Zach's stuff, his hands, and our own. Especially now with Emilie, we don't think we're going to be going out as much,. AND, my sitter is really good about not accepttion kids with fever... so if a child has the fever, the parents know darn well not to bring their child in the morning... because the sitter will turn them away, and if the child has had meds to bring down the fever, and the fever comes back, the parents get a call right away to come pick up their child.
Not that that makes a bikg difference, but it helps psychologically I guess... lol
We just take pretty good care of ourselvs. Lots of nutritious food, plenty of fluids all the time, and of course, lots of Vitamin C. (OJ etc) We don't stay sick long when we get sick... which is great.
KatieLeigh79 replied: We decided not to get the flu shot, the Ped. recommended we even consider giving it to J.R. and I chose not to (didnt think they could even offer any form of it for under a year!?) my grandma came to the Christmas party on the 14th with a "bad cold" she called it, I had a really funny feeling with how she was acting and how bad she sounded and sure enough 4 days later my cousins 2 year old son ended up in the childrens hospital downtown with the flu, actually when he went in his temp was 103.4, and they found he had structural scarlet fever, influenza, strep throat and pnemonia (sp) he got out on Christmas eve and is going to be fine, then my grandfather (her husband) ended up in there the day after Christmas for 3 days with the same problems.. Im still not sorry we didn't get the shot, but I don't understand my grandmothers logic - its almost just rude and risky when you know there is 2 small children at the party - and my cousin is also only 2 months pregnant at that time so thats even more risk if she would have gotten sick as well....
kimberley replied: ach... don't tell me stories like this. it just makes me even more convinced that the flu shot is a bad idea. i mean it only innoculates you from one strain and i have known tons of people who get it religiously and are sick every winter. i am with Zach's mom on this one, good old fashioned hand washing, reducing risk and eating healthy works for us.
my heart goes out to that baby's family.

jcc64 replied: Hate to bum you out- but some viruses are airborne, and no amount of handwashing will prevent infection from those. Still a good idea to wash hands, eat well, etc.
5littleladies replied: That is so sad!! We decided to not get the flu shot but because of the fact that it is an old strain not because of the possibility of adverse reactions-Most medical procedures have risks with them, you just have to decided which ones have benefits that outweigh the risks.
We did get the flu that is going around and it was the worst flu I have ever had, and I don't get sick easily.
Jamison'smama replied: Yikes, that was scary. I just got Jamison's second half of her flu shot this morning. We travel a lot--we did especially during the holidays and we are headed back to Oklahoma on the 24th and with SO SO many sick people getting on airplanes I just didn't want to chance it. We wipe down EVERYTHING but you are right--some are just airborne and nothing can protect these babies. It was a tough call but I decided to get the shots. Dr. said it may stop a flu--you won't necessarily know if it did, or it may just help them to get a lesser case of it--or she may get a strain not covered.
We will just do as Zach's mom said--wash wash wash!!
Kirstenmumof3 replied: OMG that is just tragic! That poor baby!
