So, how bad is coffee for kids anyway?

kit_kats_mom wrote: Lauren will not drink plain milk but if I make her a "milky latte'" (3/4 milk, 1/4 coffee) she will drink it like there's no tomorrow. After having "Katherine the slow grower who refused milk" I'm tempted to let her continue drinking it for the mere fact that she is getting some calories from it. What do you think?

Jeffs Wife replied: Have you tried something like ovalltine? They make a couple of different flavors and it has alot of vitamins in it.

As for the coffee, it is the caffeine I think that would be the worst for her, so if you are giving her decafinated it might be ok, but I still wouldn't give her that much, but you're right, at least she is getting her milk. That is very important.

I think I might worry alittle about getting her "hooked" on coffee at such a young age. I really would give the ovaltine a try, it couldn't hurt.......Michelle

gr33n3y3z replied: I dont see anything wrong with it smile.gif

mammag replied: This is the only thing I found....

Not For Babies
The clearest warnings about caffeine are for pregnant women and young children. Miscarriages and a lower birth weight have been associated with maternal caffeine intake of over 300 milligrams a day, and some breastfed babies of mothers who exceed that intake are abnormally restless or irritable. Caffeine metabolism is sluggish in children, especially toddlers (even more so in infants), so its effects last longer and successive consumption has more of an additive effect. (In adults, peak stimulatory effects of a single caffeinated beverage occur within an hour, but it takes four to six hours to clear half of it; most is gone after eighteen hours.)

I can understand your concerns though about her gaining weight and not drinking her milk. Maybe you could do it and gradually bring the amount down until she is drinking just milk and not noticing the difference.

coasterqueen replied: Mmmm, I don't think I would, personally. I don't know why, really, I just don't like the idea of it. I know about the weight concerns for sure, but to me it just wouldn't be worth it. There are things our feeding team has suggested to help Megan gained weight that were just a no-go for us.

It's your decision, though, and if you are comfortable with it go for it. thumb.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: will she drink flavored milk............vainilla, chocolate, strawberry? Kait LOVES milk and even more so if it has one of thoes flavors in it. My only concern is the caffee.

coasterqueen replied: What about trying other milks like Soy or Goats? Kylie likes milk, but she won't touch it now that she's had goats milk. The kid is LITERALLY crazy for it. wacko.gif It does have a slighly different, more 'clear concise' taste if that means anything. happy.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: Thanks for the input ladies.

I've tried rice, soy and all versions of regular milk. She doesn't like the carnation (any flavor) on a consistant basis either. She will drink a couple of swigs of it but nothing really substantial. She will chug it with coffee though. I will try decaf to see if that would work as well for her. Both of the girls are drinking the organic milk FWIW. They get whole and DH and I have fat free. It's way better than any other milk I've ever had. thumb.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Ain't that the truth! The taste of organic milk is just out of this world compared to regular milk. ALthough, like I said Kylie thinks goats milk is 100x better than organic milk. For some really strange reason her and my MIL CRAVE it, literally. wacko.gif

3_call_me_mama replied: not sure if you've thought of it or not but there is a coffee flavored syrup (liek teh kind they use in milkshakes) that you oculd use if it's teh coffee flavor that she likes.

jdkjd replied:
Good idea!

I was actually thinking about decaf instant that you could mix in and try to gradually reduce...

redchief replied: Since it's not coffee itself, but the caffeine that is the concern. You could make a pot of decaf and keep it in the refrigerator. wink.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: I personally wouldn't, but that's just my opinion. I don't even allow Tanner to have soda. I don't know this particular situation, but I have a daycare girl who will not drink white milk either. However, mom and dad rarely offer it to her. She knows she will get her chocolate milk if she stands firm long enough then they will give in. She's use to the good stuff so why would she go back, ya know? Tanner is not very picky and we have always instilled good eating habits in him so I am not sure what I would do if our next one was the opposite. I am pretty stubborn, blush.gif so I probably still wouldn't. I would rather try Pediasure (sp?) or something like that if I had to, or maybe put some vanilla extract in the white milk. ???

Jackie012007 replied: they also make this stuff, Carnation Instant Breakfast, that comes in coffee flavor and there is no caffeine or anything in it. You mix it with milk. My OBGYN reccommended it to me to drink for breakfast because I was sick for a while and lost a lot of weight and nutrients... I drink them almost every morning.

A&A'smommy replied: we use ovaltine alyssa will NOT drink plain milk but she LOVES ovaltine
