Slipping down the growth chart

amynicole21 wrote: Nora had her 1 year old check up today and was 20lbs 9oz. She has been 20lbs since she was 9 months old... so while she is still at a healthy 40% for her weight, she WAS at 99% up until she was 9 months old. unsure.gif The doctor just wants me to make sure she isn't drinking too much water (which she isn't) and is eating plenty of table foods along with nursing and whole milk. He said that perhaps my bmilk is not as calorically dense as it used to be. sad.gif I asked if it might have something to do with her increased movement after 9mos and he said maybe. dunno.gif

I know we had some tiny ones (Corey and Katherine for starters). Any ideas for some higher calorie foods I can offer her?

Other than the weight thing, she did well... cried a lot, but at least she's healthy!

1lilpeanut2love replied: My Kaylee is 20 lbs too. She had her 12-month check up on Friday. The doctor said she was fine. Nothing to worry about. I think Kaylee is just going to be a petite girl. She is 29.5 inches long though!!

Maybe your little girl will be petite too! tongue.gif

ediep replied: hhuummm, I really think its normal for the weight to slow down once the baby starts moving more....

anyway, since jason is also pretty small I like to offer him cheese (especially munster or american they have high fat content) pudding made with whole milk,

avacodaos are good, but jay won't tough them

coasterqueen replied: Well you know that I've been dealing with this for what seems like since Megan's birth rolleyes.gif and constantly get told my breastmilk isn't high in calories and I think you know my response on that. tongue.gif Even though I feel they are a load of bull it still makes me feel bad, but I know it's not true. ANYWAYS, Megan's feeding team has recommended that I put a tbsp of heavy cream in her bottles/sippies of breastmilk (or formula if I was using that) to give her extra calories. They said that was more important than how much solids she was getting. My PED thinks this is a load of bull and I should just keep doing what I'm doing and him and I agreed that feeding her whole baby yogurt would be a better idea than the cream. So I do that several times a week.

But it really IS normal for their weight to slow down when they start moving wink.gif.

luvmykids replied: Colt weighed 25 pounds at 6 months and stayed there until about 18 months, he just got active and starting moving and didn't gain weight for the longest time.

the Carnation instant breakfast drinks (that you add to milk) are good for adding calories or the pediasure.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Logan has consistently been at or below 5% on the weight chart since he was 2 months.
Good high calorie things are carnation instant breakfast added to whole milk. Yogurt, not the lowfat kind, cheese. Any dense food, meats, pasta, veggies are good and so are fruits.

ETA, last time Logan got weighed he was 18 months old and was only 21lb, 5 oz.

kit_kats_mom replied: Lauren has slowed waaaay down on growth now that she's running around more. 20 laps around the couch during a commercial break is nothing to her. (maybe mommy should participate more lol).

Some things to try;
Add cream or butter to foods
Cheeses (melted on veggies)
whole fat yogurts
milk shakes
hagan daz
full fat puddings
peanut butter (or any nut butter. almond butter is supposed to be really great for you but I find it tastes a bit wierd)

Basically, anything that you can't eat on a sensible diet. LOL
If I get some free time tonight I'll look for the link I had on "calorie dense foods". that our nutritionist gave us.

na81 replied: I agree with the Carnation Instant Breakfast, my nephew had to have that because he is tiny. Taylor got weighed the other day and she is also 20 lbs and she is 17 months old, her doctor isn't worried, he says that she is just tall for her age-she was 31 inches tall at 15 months! I wouldn't worry too much, it's probably because she's active!!

kit_kats_mom replied: DUH! Can't believe I forgot the carnation instant breakfast. Katherine has been having a Morning and Evening "chocolate milk" for the last two years. We have switched to the sugar free kind (in the blue box) & she hasn't noticed the difference. I mix it with full fat organic milk and she chugs it.

She'd probably still weigh 20 pounds if it werent for that stuff.

Single Mama replied: My Maci is in the 5th percentile for her age and she dropped from the 17th, its scary because my son has always been off the charts. I am still breastfeeding sad.gif sad.gif but I try to pack the calories into what she will eat. We do the carnation instant breakfast and the yogurt smoothies.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I would probably just make sure that any dairy you give her is WHOLE, nothing lowfat at all. Other than that, all I can think of is the carnation instant breakfast or what's those other drinks for kids, Pediasure? Oh, my sis is a dietician and she makes her girls smoothies a lot...fruit and yogurt have a lot of calories in them, good calories that is!

my2monkeyboys replied: If it makes you feel any better, my son has only gained about 2 pounds since he turned 2...he's 3 1/2 now and still only weighs 26 pounds! He's always been small, so as long as he's eating healthy and developing well I don't worry about it. He'll have plenty of time when he's a teenager to sit around and eat and gain weight! LOL

ilovemybaby replied: I don't think she is underweight unsure.gif . Abby was never 20lbs at 9 months. She was just over 22lbs at 15 months I think. She is probably still only about 23 or 24lbs and she is turning 2 on Friday. She is by no means underweight though.

amynicole21 replied:
It's not that she's underweight, just that she has dropped so dramatically on the growth chart.

On another note, I looked at the revised breastfed baby growth chart that the WHO just came out with. Nora's weight follows that curve nearly perfectly! She is still in the 75%, down from just 85%... It really bothers me that my ped didn't mention that bfed babies follow different growth patterns. And he is VERY pro-bf, if not a bit old school. rolleyes.gif

sunrosejenn replied: Eliana is going to be 18 months this Sunday.
17lbs 8oz and 30in.

I'm trying to find foods high in calories as well. Eliana doesn't eat alot so we need to look at high calorie foods. The walmart brand supplement drink (found in the pharmacey section) has 350 calories per can. Since this has soy in it it makes Eliana projectile vomit more. Sorry I wasn't of much help.

ilovemybaby replied:
Has she just started walking lately? I would say that she has just gotten more active and lost a bit of weight. And they don't grow nearly half as fast once they reach 1. Abby has only gone from 78cm to 84cm since she was 15 months (she is 2 on Friday) and her weight... well, I think she is probably about 23-24lbs and she was 22lbs something at 15 months I think. I would tell you if I could find her baby book dry.gif sad.gif

ilovemybaby replied: Also she doesn't look the least bit small in your siggie smile.gif She is a real cutie btw!

siblingtoolivia replied: My daughter is going to be 4 in a month and only weighs 31 lbs....MD has never been worried because she is always gaining steady, just not in giant leaps but does get taller in big leaps......she has never gone down though, except when she was an infant and puked all the time due to reflux rolleyes.gif

BAC'sMom replied: Well I have one below, one in the middle and completely off the growth chart! Ansley has always been very petite she weighs about 32 pounds and she just turned 6. Our MD told us not to worry about it as long as she is eating… she is just very small. Callum and her are about 4 pounds difference and pretty much wear the same size clothes. She makes up for her size with her attitude! wink.gif
