Should I have still taken them? - dr's and conflicting opinions...

kyrus_smith wrote: I'd been taking folic acid since I found out I was 4 weeks preg until I was about 8-9 weeks because I got piles and it was so uncomfortable-I went to a dr and he said it's probally the folic acid tablet so he told me to stop taking them if it was causing me to get so bunged up.Well a week after that I went to my dr and she said liquid folic acid would be better and I shouldn't stop taking it atleast until I'm 12 weeks so I went to the chemist but they had no liquid folic acid left so I talked to the pharmacist who said I should be still taking it and that the liquid would make me just as constipated as the tablets -so I didn't bother getting it and I got to 11 weeks and 6 days without taking any more folic acid and asked the nurse at my ante natal apt and she said it's too late to start taking them ...is my baby at risk?

kit_kats_mom replied: possibly but I think the chances are slim. In the future, take the meds but up your fiber and fluid intake to ward off constipation. wink.gif

mckayleesmom replied: I was told that folic acid is something they reccomend to prevent spina bifida. In order for it to prevent, you had to of taken it before you were pregnant. Once the baby is concieved spina bifida is already present in the baby wether you take the pills during the pregnancy or not. It doesn't mean there is going to be something wrong with your baby though...its all about percentages of this occuring.

ZandersMama replied: I never took folic acid, ever. I wouldnt be too concerned. Did you take it through with your first?

MyBabeMaddie replied: Isn't there enough folic acid in your prenatal vitamins?

CantWait replied: I never took it. If you're taking your prenatal viatimins, eating a well balanced diet, and are in child bearing years and in good shape, then you have little to worry about.

kyrus_smith replied:
Yeah I took folic acid with my 1st all the way from about 6-7 weeks onwards and then swapped for pregaday which is a iron and folic acid supplement you have to start when your 13 weeks onwards until the end. tongue.gif

me either and mine are fine I have 4
Everything I tried made me so sick it wasnt worth it
I still take nothing I just eat better smile.gif

MyLuvBugs replied: Ya know! If you just take a regular prenatal vitamin....you get plenty of folic acid in those, and if you're still worried...just drink a glass of OJ every day or eat broccoli. There's really no need to take folic acid as a suppliment if you eat right. rolleyes.gif Didn't you ask any of these questions when you PG the first time around? huh.gif

ashtonsmama replied: Wow. That was alot for one breath.

I think you should stop worrying and check with your doctor, get more opinions or do some research if you're flipping out!

He's perfectly fine.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Try eating dark green vegetable more often. They contain lots of folic acid. wink.gif

Cece00 replied: 3 of my 4 kids were surprises.

I've never purposefully taken folic acid.

Even when we were TTC our 3rd (the only planned one).

None of my kids have SB.

If you eat normal foods (folic acid is in citrus, cereals, etc etc etc), you have a pretty low chance of not having a high enough lvl & having a baby with an issue.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
That would be my question. I never took any extra FA, there was always more than enough in my daily vitamins.
