Should I be concerned?
MommyToAshley wrote: Ashley had her eyes dilated yesterday at the pediatric ophthalmologist (after the allergic reaction she had to eye drops). They dilated her eyes to make sure something else wasn't causing the swelling. They dilated her eyes around 12:30 yesterday afternoon and they are still dilated now (almost 24 hours later). I just paged the doctor, but of course I haven't heard back yet. Anyone else ever had their kid's eyes dilated? How long did it last? I know mine usually return to normal around 2 hours later.
A&A'smommy replied: oh wow.. yeah I would be concerned they shouldn't be dialated anymore!! I hope he gets back to you ASAP!!! Bless her heart that has to be frustrating!!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I would say 4 hours max. I hope you hear back from them soon.
Poor Ashley!!! What a rough couple of days she's had. It's bad enough having allergies, but all of this added to it....my goodness!!!
luvmykids replied: Definitely doesn't sound "normal"....let us know what the dr says
amymom replied: I would definetly be concerned, but not too too badly.
I worked at an eye doctor's office, but it was 20 years ago, some things have changed.
But we did have some people who's eyes did stay dilated for 24 to 48 hours. I would suspect that you will hear from the doctor soon, if you don't hear withing two hours of calling then call again, then if you do not hear from them call your pediatrician. Just so you can check on things.
Something to check with her is get a small flashlight, a penlight preferably. Go into a room with the lights out (it doesn't have to be pitch dark, just not bright) and look at her eyes, then shine the flashlight in each, one at a time. See if the pupil constricts. I think that will tell you something. I would suspect that if the pupil constricts as you shine the light in, then nothing is wrong. If they don't then the meds just haven't worn off yet. I am sure the meds will wear off soon. .
~Roo'sMama~ replied: I hope they call you back soon!!
amymom replied: Any word?
How is she doing?
I hope all is well.
MommyToAshley replied: Her eyes have gone back to normal. The doctor did call, but not until after the effect of the dilation drops had gone away. He did say that it is not unusual for it to last longer in children and that some kids are more sensitive to the drops than others. Anyways, she is fine. Thanks again for your concern.
luvmykids replied: What a relief I hope this is the end of this whole mess, for both your sakes How is she doing with the new drops?
MommyToAshley replied: The new drops have really made a difference. The swelling is all gone and she says that her eyes don't itch any more. I was really nervous about putting anything else in her eyes, but I am glad I did now.
I feel bad that I have kept her inside the past few days. Her friends were all playing outside and she was watching from the window. So, we invited them in the house to play. She'd rather be outside with them, as she LOVES the outdoors, but it was the next best thing.
Sam & Abby's Mom replied: I'm glad she's better now. How scary! I missed the first part - reaction to eyedrops. Sammy's eyes have been driving him nuts the last few days. He's rubbing them so much they've been swollen, bloodshot and he has those allergy dark circles under his eyes. I'm calling his doc Monday about changing his meds,,,,,,,,,again.
Glad Ashley is better!
A&A'smommy replied: OH good I'm SOOO glad she is okay, thats nuts that they stayed dilated for so long!!!
punkeemunkee'smom replied: I am so glad she is better! What a scary past few days for ya'll!
MoonMama replied: Oh gosh poor little sweet pea. I'm glad she is doing better, I would have been freaking out.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: I'm glad to hear that everything is going okay now! Poor Ashley!
redchief replied: I'm so glad that things turned around so well for Ashley.
