She's got her first cold - Emmy is sick :(
Emmy'sMom wrote: Hi all!
Well -- I thought she was getting some more teeth but she woke up this morning with a runny nose and a little cough!
Her father was sick all weekend and I have a runny nose and sore throat myself

So, I called the doctor and she said to get some Triaminic Cold & Cough --Infant Formula -- Daddy will pick it up on the way home.
She hasn't really wanted much cereal or baby food today ---just nursing --and she gives me this pathetic look when her little nose is running......
No fever yet.....Hope she doesn't get one ----and I am on the look out for ear pulling....she has never been sick before --so I am kind of freaking out
Send Emmy some "get well soon" vibes please!
Summer colds are awful on adults....I bet she is miserable!

coasterqueen replied: Cynda, how old is your little one again? I ask because I was always told not to give an infant under age 12 months the "cold and cough" medicines because it can cause *issues* with their ability to actually learn to cough.
EDIT: DUh, where is my brain at.....((HUGS)) for Emmy. I hope she gets feeling better real soon!!!!!!!
Emmy'sMom replied: Hi!
She is 8 months old. I talked to her ped. and they recommended the cold and cough What do I do?
cynda
coasterqueen replied: Hmmm, let me see if I can find some literature for you. Maybe my ped was just being overly cautious, ? He was adamant on me not letting Kylie have that though. I'll see what I can find
Emmy'sMom replied: OK cool! THANKS!
I am a freak about giving her medicines.

coasterqueen replied: I've gotta leave work here to get home to nurse DD, but as soon as I can when I get there I'm gonna research this more for you. Hopefully someone else on this board can also chime in and give their two cents. Some might be able to agree or disagree with me .
Emmy'sMom replied: OK ---thanks!!!!

mommy2mylittleangels replied: I was told not give mine the cough medicine too. She was really sick with all kinds of illnesses and the thing that they advised me not to give her was cough medicine. I didn't understand why but he said not to give them medicine with cough meds in with the cold med. I hate giving my kids medicine anyways so i guess i always do what they say. I also heard that they need to learn to cough and that coughing is good for them....poor things sound horriable when they cough Just thought that i would try to help with the info that i was given.. Hope your little one feels better soon.
amynicole21 replied: AWww! Poor Emmy I hope she's feeling better soon!
I was never told not to use cough meds before a certain age, but it is important to let them cough to loosen chest congestion. I always hold off on cough meds unless it is keeping her awake at nap time or at night.
coasterqueen replied: Okay, I can't seem to find any research on the web, *yet*, lol, but here's a good link on explaining colds, etc you might find interesting, lol. http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/T081000.asp
But I have put a message in to a few *experts* I know that may have some info.
I, personally, would not give one because I remember not only my ped but my LC told me that it was NOT good for them to have. But I don't have any factual evidence to give you at the moment.
If I get anything from them tonight, I'll pass it along to you.
A&A'smommy replied: Poor baby girl ! GET WELL VIBES FOR EMMY! I hope you guys feel better soon!
Emmy'sMom replied: Thanks everyone!
I think I am going to hold off on the medicine until I can talk to her doc. tomorow!
I appreciate the well wishes and advice!

ediep replied: I agree with Amy, I wasn't told not to give cough medicine before any age, but my ped told me that if the cough is productive (phlegmy) then its important for them to cough to bring it up so it doesn't sit in their lungs. He did say it was ok to give his medicine at night if the coughing is keeping him up!
Good luck! Hope she is better soon!!!

ctymom replied: I hope Emmy feels better! I personally dont handle my kids being sick very well at all. It always scares me about doing the right thing.
But I will say that I agree with others here regarding cough med's. Coughing can be a good thing... to help break up any congestion. And surpressing the cough would prevent that. From my understanding... the coughing med's are more for times when they might have alot of coughing that is keeping them awake at night. I rarely even give med's to surpress coughing with my older kids. One has asthma and it's important to keep things moving.
take care, Pamela
Emmy'sMom replied: Thank you all so much for the advice!
I am a first time mommy and I don't have any family here to turn to...I appreciate the advice and well wishes!
I have a call into the doctor -- I didn't give her any medicine last night. She is feeling alot better ! --I'm not though
~hugs~

coasterqueen replied: Ahh Cynda I'm glad she is feeling better. Sorry you are not .
I talked with several people who were told the same thing by their ped as I was, but I can't find any "factual" evidence for you. Sorry. :-( I know I was told that by my LC too, but I can't seem to get ahold of her this morning, lol.
Hopefully your PED can give some more insight as to why it would not be good.
