School field trips
hawkshoe wrote: My son came home with a permission slip for a school field trip to Midieval Times. When I saw the cost I was almost floored. It is $66.50. Is it just me or is this ridiculous?
boyohboyohboy replied: that is nuts, what about the kids who cant afford to go, isnt that signaling them out in front of all their friends? and i am not so sure thats a really educational trip for that kind of money...
luvbug00 replied: Medival times?! we were gonna go there for my Bridal shower and that amount is for ( here) VIP seating. They have to be kidding!
C&K*s Mommie replied: WOWZA!!
Kaitlin'smom replied: So what does that all incule?
shoot when Kait can go on feild trips (they have to be 4yrs old) so far the most I have seen is $10.
msoulz replied: It is NOT just you! Never heard of such a thing.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Oh my! I would check with the school to make sure they will have alternative care for kids who can not go or can not afford it. I don't think I'd ever have the guts to ask parents to pay that much for a FT. Yikes! What does that cost all include? Going to Medivil Times sounds cool, but goodness that's expensive, for a FT nonetheless where the kids wont get to fully enjoy themselves like they would in a small group like with family.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I'm sure that includes bus fair and things that weren't probably calculated in your price quote. But still, that's crazy to ask of parents for a FT!
redchief replied: That's nuts. No way a field trip for a little kid should cost that much. Umm, have they ever heard of a museum?... you know, something educational.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I've never had to pay for a field trip. Maddie has one on Friday and we pack our own lunch and the parents who chaperone need to pay, but that's it. There were students in high school in my hometown who went to Medieval Times and had to pay, but that was high school and it was a special class. They did this every year so it was expected if you were in this class.
hawkshoe replied: It is for the 7th grade trip and includes transportation and the show. I think they are using one of those nice buses with the nice seats and bathrooms in them. Personally I think they should use school buses which would cost considerably less (probably about $15-$20 pp less). It is 1 1/2 hours to the show so it does not necessitate luxury bus accomodations.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Is your son in any honors classes or anything? What will the children who cannot attend do? Just curious. I think 7th grade is old enough for this type of trip. Although, that is a lot of money.
hawkshoe replied: No he is not in an honors class. Everyone in the 7th grade is going. If you don't send you kid, then they stay at school going through their normal schedule for the day.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Well in the past we've gone to a fair, about 2 hours away... and it was fairly expensive, about 85$... but that included ticket price and transportation both ways. What was NOT included in that price, was cost of food, drinks, games and extras.
7th grade isn't that young to go on a field trip... I remember going to Toronto from Ottawa (about 5 1/2 hours average drive, maybe 6 in a bus) to go to Stratford in 8th grade. That was a little more expensive, since we also had to pay for hotel accomodations, even if it was split in 4...
kimberley replied: well it depends on the distance and at that cost, there has to be alternate care. i doubt my kids would be going to that.. but that have gone to plays about 20min away and that cost be over $30
CantWait replied: I think for a one day trip that is way to much JMHO. At the same time though, I would probably still send my child if I could just because I wouldn't want him to miss out, and Medival Times is suppose to be really cool.
In grade 7 we went to a ranch for 4-5 days and paid almost $300 but everything was included.
Grade 8 we went for 5 days to Washington, DC for $500, again everything was included.
Calimama replied: I feel bad for those kid's who cant afford it.
