Scary night - and good safety tip

mckayleesmom wrote: Tonight I gave Mckaylee a bath and got her dressed....we brushed her teeth and she wanted her hair in a pony tail. I always use those little breakable rubber bands...that way if they get caught in her hair..I just break them really easy. I put her and Russ to bed and then cleaned the living room and kitchen....About 8:30 I hear her crying...I give her 5 minutes to see if she actually needs something or if she is just pulling a Mckaylee stunt. Five minutes go by and she is still crying so I head upstairs. I go in her room without turning on the light and ask her whats wrong and she says her finger hurts. Thinking she has a hangnail and picked it again I told her I would get a bandaid and head out her door...I flipped on the light as I walked out to be able to see when I came back in. I get the bandaid and go back in and my eyes about popped out of my head...from the doorway of her room I can see that her finger is bright crayola blue. I run over and realize that she has a rubber band wrapped around her thumb so tight that it looks like its embedded in her skin. I screamed for leithan because I couldn't get it off. I ran out and grabbed the tweasers and had to dig into her poor thumb to catch a piece to break off....Shes screaming...Leithans holding her down for me. As soon as I unwrap it, her finger turns pink again...So here is my warning...

DON'T PUT YOUR KIDS TO BED WITH RUBBERBANDS IN THEIR HAIR wacko.gif ...Use something that they can't wrap around their fingers tightly.

kayla's mama replied: OMG thats scary. I never thought about that before. My mom always put me to bed with a pony tail. Glad shes OK. Hows her thumb?

mckayleesmom replied: Good....It looked really bad when I first saw it and I really thought I would end up in the er...but right when I took off the rubber band it pinked back up.

luvbug00 replied: Oh my! poor baby!! Glad she's ok!! hug.gif

jacobsmama replied: OMG...I'm so glad she is ok..I use to go to bed all the time with hairties in too! Good tip..sorry you had to learn the hard way hug.gif

mckayleesmom replied: Well I think a hair tie that is cloth like a scrunchie is ok....just not rubber. The rubber was easy for her to wrap really tight and not be able to get it off.

amymom replied: OH MY very scary. I am glad she is alright now.

My3LilMonkeys replied: I'm glad that she is ok! I will keep this in mind because I would have never thought of that!

luvmykids replied: Thanks for passing it on, I won't use them at night anymore either. Glad she's ok. hug.gif

A&A'smommy replied: OMG I guess I should have put a warning on here too when we were in missouri Jeremiahs cousins little girl did the SAME exact thing wink.gif I'm glad she is okay its amazing what kids will do hug.gif

CAMSMOM1 replied: I'm sure that was very scary for all of you. Thank goodness you went in to get her, usually I let Cameron cry it out for a bit. But I'm sure you could tell by the type of cry she had. Poor baby!

kimberley replied: poor Mckaylee. glad her finger is ok. hug.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: shessh how did she get that out of her hair? Kait has a hard time pulling them out. But thatnks for the tip, she does not go to bed with her hair up normaly, very rare she does.

My2Beauties replied: ohmy.gif OMG That is scary! Good thing you did catch it in enough time to where she didn't have to go to the ER. Bless her heart and poor mommy I bet you about had a heart attack!

~Roo'sMama~ replied: Wow that's scary! I'm glad she's ok. hug.gif My dad always had a conniption if we went to be with any rubber bands or anything anywhere... he wouldn't even let us wear a watch to bed. rolleyes.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
Wrong.

Sorry - we found this out with Emilie... we put those little soft fuzzy elastics that lose it's elasticity once you've used them... thinking we were safe - the little brat puts them around her wrists, as "bracelets" and she thinks she's pretty, right before she starts screaming that her hand hurts.

They're too big to wrap too tightly around a finger - but perfect for a small wrist.

We can't even leave her in pigtails during the daytime without watching her... the second she gets a chance, she prefers to wear those darn elastics as jewellery.

You can't be too careful... I suggest to never put your child to bed with small elastics of any kind, you just never know.... hug.gif

Lexismama replied: oh wow that is so scary im so glad she is A OK! And thanks for the warning, too bad you had to find out that way!
