Rice Cereal Quetion
MotherForever2043 wrote: It's been a long time since i've had a baby and all so I need some help remembering things. What age is it okay for me to give Jordan some rice ceral? I'm thinking it's okay to give it to him now, but like I said it's been a while. TIA
A&A'smommy replied: I would wait until 6months because he still has an open gut.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Yep, I agree to wait until 6 months, although I started my first at 4 months because that was what they said was okay at the time (2004).
ediep replied: I waited unti Emma was about 5-6 months and she did great with her cereal and baby foods
moped replied: I say between 4-6 months, i personally think 1 month s a wee bit early.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: I say 5-6 months, but definitely not before 4 months! 1 month is way too early.
Calimama replied: I agree completely.
lovemy2 replied: Ditto unless it is recommended by a Pediatrician in a bottle for reflux or something but even then Dylan didn't get it in his bottle until I think he was at least 8-10 weeks....
Boo&BugsMom replied: Wow...we started both the boys early. They were big babies and needed more than just formula to feel satisfied. Having two very solid boys close to 10 pounds each will do that. Tanner we started at 3 months, and Aiden is 3 months and has been on it for about 2-3 weeks already...I mix it with formula and a small amount of fruit/veggie. Both did/do great with it. Personally, all kids are different. Sizes and weight make a difference too, IMO. Aiden right now is the average size of a 5 month old, and he's only 3 months. I couldn't imagine waiting until both boys were 6 months. They would have been eating every hour! I also do not fully believe all the hubbub about the allergies and early start correlation. But that's JMO.
Just wanted to add that I do not mix it in a bottle, BUT they make formula that is safe for babies, even newborns, that is made with a small amount of cereal already mixed in it. I know Enfamil makes one, not sure of other brands. A friend of mine got samples from her doctor for her two-week old. It also is suppose to help with frequent spit up...one of Aiden's major issues, and the cereal has helped him A LOT with that as well.
3xsthefun replied: Wow! Do you I feel like a bad momma now. I know I fed my girls rice cereal before they was 6 months. I think Kaitlynn was less then 2 months but she also had problem with relux. I think Maegan might have been 3- 4 months old. My girls have never had any problems with food allergies either.
We just bought Ryan a box last night but haven't gave him any yet. We thought about giving him little bit since sometimes formula alone doesn't seem to fill him up enough.
skinkybaby replied: We started Caroline on it last week at 11 weeks. But she weighs over 15 pounds and is in the 99.7th percentile and we got the ok from the dr.
Cece00 replied: The new age is 6 months. It used to be 4 months. I had a couple of my kids on it earlier than that- my first went on it pretty early. I feel bad about that now, but he didnt have problems with it then...so it worked out.
ANYWAY...I didnt try either of my last 2 before 5-6 months. And neither of them really liked it...they didnt eat it much actually. My 10 month old is already on table food & formula still...he really dislikes baby food. He'll eat it, but he just isnt into it like he is about real food.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I think this is what some doctors forget to add, esp. ones with websites. Most websites just go by the general info in order to cover their butts. They don't want to be held liable if anything were to happen, understandably so, but people need to use their parental instincts as well . One general blanket rule doesn't cover each child. There are general rules for everything, but people still need to consider each individual child, IMO. Both of my boys have never fit into "the norm".
CeCe, we also had that issue with Tanner. He was on all table food by 10 months because he didn't want the jar stuf anymore. Can't blame him though...yuck! He got a taste of fried chicken and there was no turning back.
Cece00 replied: I know, right? Who can blame them....I wouldnt eat baby food....unless maybe if I was starving. The funniest part is that he really doesnt have much in the way of teeth (although he just had like 4 pop out, but they are BARELY out...) and he still loves food. You'd think because its probably harder to eat the babyfood would be better but nope...
MotherForever2043 replied: Yes, I do feel like a bad momma right now. I have a quick question, when/if you give Ryan the rice cereal will you be giving it to him in a bottle? I wanted to put a little bit of rice cereal in Jordan's bottle. Not too much though, just a little bit to keep him full and satisfied. But, I'm not sure if I should use the bottle or not. TIA

A&A'smommy replied: your not a bad mommy
BTW its up to you to figure out whats best for your baby, read the links I posted they were very helpful to me!!
Boo&BugsMom replied: Did you see the post about the cereal already mixed in formula you can buy? Not sure if you are BF or what, but they make formula with cereal already mixed in that is safe for babies of all ages. I think it's ground up a lot finer, and since it comes with mixing directions you don't risk the chances of it getting too thick. Just thought I'd bring that up again in case you didn't know.
3xsthefun replied: With the girls I put it in a bottle. But...since everyone thinks it is bad I won't suggest doing it. If you feel comfortable doing then you can go ahead and do it. Really it is up to you and no one else you know?
I think I might just hold out on the cereal at least until he is 3-4 months. He is gaining weight good I found out yesterday he is now 12lbs and 13 oz So for now I am just going to give him more formula when he eats.
MotherForever2043 replied: Thanks everyone! I'm going to look for the formula that comes with rice cereal in it. If things don't work out with that, then I'll wait until he's 4-6 months to start with the rice cereal. Thanks again, you guys have helped me out a bunch
wcs40110 replied: I know you pretty much figured this out but you could always ask your dr... I was aways told the 2 things you never give your baby in a bottle is cereal and juice, not sure why about cereal. I know a lot of people still do but I am rather by the book. I wouldnt give Dakota cereal until her 6 mo mark and I wont give her juice in a cup. I've never heard of the cereal in the formula though???
