Replacing Mattress--How often?
Jamison'smama wrote: I was watching Rachael Ray and the expert on her show recommended replacing your mattress every 5-7 years and your pillows yearly. I can see the pillows but your mattress? It was due to dust mites that she said are unavoidable even with vacuuming and washing sheets. Do any of you replace them that often?
sparkys2boys replied: We haven't yet and it almost nine yrs old. Hmm, I guess I never really thought about the dust mites in my mattress that much, I do vaccum it regularly but it's probally time to get a new one.
coasterqueen replied: Gosh I wish I could, but that's because our mattress is already sagging. It's like 8 or 9 years old. I usually get in bed first and the mattress seems fine, as soon as Dh comes in and lays down I roll to the center. It's not that's he's fat, because he's not, the mattress just sucks. I want a new one but El Cheapo won't let me get one. So I guess I've never thought of replacing one for dust mites, but for comfortability I have.
jem0622 replied: Heck no!
MommyToAshley replied: Ummm, I guess we must have dust mites then.
We just bought a rather expensive matress that has a lifetime warranty from sagging or tear, etc. I couldn't imagine paying that much to replace it that often. I do wash my sheets often though.
cameragirl21 replied: hmmm, i'm allergic to dust mites so maybe i should give this some thought. the thing is i have a very expensive mattress and very expensive pillows, i just don't see how i could justify replacing them every year. i thnk dust mites are unavoidable things, you can replace all you want but they'll still be there and if you're allergic like me, then whether you have thousands or millions, you'll still feel the allergen in the air. i don't have any problems as far as allergies in my bed, that is one place i am rarely allergic.
sem replied: I always thought ten years was the rule of thumb for replacing mattresses.
booey2 replied: Well we bought ours about 8 years ago and I really really wanna replace it because all of the new bed sheets are not fitting my standard size bed. They all have the extra deep pockets, 16-17". I was really surprised at how well it has lasted considering I am quite overweight and we killed our last mattress.
Calimama replied: Yes, we've had ours 4 years now ( I had before we were married) and are looking to get a new one soon.
MoonMama replied: I agree...My parents got DH and I our bed & mattress when we got married so its only been just over 3 years...But I can't see us replacing them that often. Esp since my parents sprang for one those Tempra-Pedic (sp) mattesses for us. No way!
CantWait replied: Heck NO!!!!!!! Who can afford to replace a mattress that often??
holley79 replied: Nope, can't afford to do that. We bought one of those really expensive matteresses so there is no way in heck I would just throw them out.
gr33n3y3z replied: when flipping the mattress over doesnt help my back any more then I will go buy a new one
coasterqueen replied: We use allergen covers for our mattress and pillows to help with the allergies.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Heck no. Wow, that would get expensive. The first mattress we ever owned was hubby's from when he was a teenager. Now that I look back on it, I get a little disgusted. The mattress we have now we've had for 6 years and it's perfectly fine. Nothing wrong with it, barely feels used, so we don't intend on getting rid of it until we move or it goes to crap. Dust mites aren't as bad as people make them out to be. Yes, they are creepy to think about, but they don't harm or kill you. They make you sneeze, but that's more the dust itself than anything else. In fact, a small amount of them are good for you (boosts your natural immune system), believe it or not. They don't freak me out, and that's coming from a germ and clean NUT!
Boo&BugsMom replied: Oh, wanted to add...I do replace our pillows often. But it's not because of mites. It's because I hate flat pillows and they seem to get flat fairly quick.
3xsthefun replied: Uh,no. We actually bought our first brand new mattress and box spring last month. Before the new set we had the mattress from when DH was single and then we had one that was given to us after our house fire.
I'm sure we won't be buying a new set in another 5-7 years. Heck..it took us little over 7 years to get the set we have now.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I always thought it was every 8-10 years. We have my old one from college in the guest room and that's 10 years old, but rarely used. Good mattress. And we just bought a new one last year for our room which I have yet to vacuum yet. It's so dang big and heavy, I can't see doing that very often, but I will try. As for pillows, I replace them every few years, but wash them every few months or so..
Who can remember to do that with all the other millions of things we have to remember as parents!!! I'm sure my grandma is still sleeping on her matress from the fifties...she's still alive and well!
Twelve Volt Man replied: Excellent news. Congrats!
~Roo'sMama~ replied: There is no way we could afford to replace our mattresses that often ~ even if we bought the cheapest one available every time. I am hoping to get a new bed sometime in the not too distant future even though we've only had ours for 4 years, but only because we had to buy a cheap one when we got married and it's not very comfortable. If and when we're able to get a new (and hopefully nicer!) mattress set, I'm sure it will be the one we'll have for the rest of our lives, or until it falls apart.
We can't replace our pillows every year like they say either ~ I just got a new pillow a few months ago after having one for over 3 years, and the only reason I got a new one is because I have problems with neck aches and my pillow was getting too flat. Poor Dh isn't picky and so he'll probably never get a new one.
JadensMama05 replied: No way!! I have my grandma's old mattress and she had it for like 8 years before I got it, 2 years ago. I would LOVE a new one but they are so expensive. Ours isn't really worn or anything but it's too small, too short. Hopefully this summer we'll be getting a new one or next year with taxes
Nina J replied: I replaced our mattress when it was uncomfortable, that was 2 years ago. As soon as it starts to go, I'll go get a new one.
I got a bunch of expensive pillows for cheap about a year ago, so I bought about 20 of them. I put some on the guest beds, and I've just switched one of the guest bedroom pillows with DH and mine not long ago because they were getting to old I thought it was a smart plan though, I won't have to buy pillows for a few years.
jcc64 replied: I guess my situation would gross some of you out. We've had our king size mattress for over 14 yrs, and we inherited it from dh's parents- so it wasn't even new when we first got it. I believe it was the best money could buy at the time, and it's held up very well. It's still incredibly comfy and in good shape. I'm sure a new one would be great, but I'm not dying to spend $$$ on something I don't really need. I agree with Jen about the mites- they're pretty unavoidable- even if I got a new mattress, they'd still be in the carpet, window coverings, etc.
Mommy2BAK replied: hmm... I've been wanting a new mattress, perhaps I should bring this up to DH!
