RIP Blue - Anthony's second fish has died

CantWait wrote: The cloudy fuzz took up his body today, and when I checked on him at bedtime, he was cleary not alive any longer. No tears this time, but Anthony wants another fish. There is only the one pet store that sells fish and I'm not sure it's a good idea to another one from there.

I was thinking of getting a couple hermit crabs, my friend has them and says they are super easy, although Anthony loves fish.

Any other ideas for super easy to care for inexpensive to buy and keep up with pets?

Brias3 replied: If he's dead set on a fish, have you tried a beta? They are pretty colorful, cheap and easy care- they even go right in a regular fishbowl! We have an aquarium but also a beta in a bowl in the kitchen. We've had this fish, honest to God for five years now. He's survived numerous car trips and an international move- go figure! lol

CantWait replied:
LOL that's what we've had the last 2 times.

cameragirl21 replied: i'm sorry to hear that, Marie, fish can be hard to keep.
i suggest a turtle, or a bunny. happy.gif
and hermit crabs are very easy to keep, from what i hear anyway, i have never owned one. but you have to keep buying them larger shells.

HuskerMom replied: Gerbils are easy and fun too! They're also very clean. We used to have a couple. The pet store we got them from accidentally put a female with the males and we ended up buying a male and a female and ended up with a bunch of babies laugh.gif We had wanted two males smile.gif

redplaydoh replied: Does the fish store guarantee the fish? Have you explained to them that the last few fish you've bought from them have died from a disease? Will they replace the fish maybe???

mom21kid2dogs replied: RIP Blue. sad.gif Is there a town nearby (or will you be visiting out of town) that might be a better supplier? Might be worth a trip. Our goldfish, Tessa & Tessa seem to thrive well on neglect so I love them!! Laura, the scum sucker, didn't last too long, though.

Old Mom Hubbard replied: Here are a couple of great websites that may be able to help with fish care and many diseases fish can get, such as "ick"

..and a tip-we ONLY USE PURIFIED REVERSE-OSMOSIS WATER and add just a little pinch of sea salt (bought at the pet store)...just a small amount) and I clean their bowls once a week, sometimes twice. I feed just the brine shrimp from the little container-the frozen-a cube thawed in a glass of fresh water, then use a spoon to feed just a few. Sometimes they get the dried brine shrimp in the flake fish food container, but they seem to do best with the frozen cubed thawed as mentioned. I store the leftover in the refrigerator with plastic wrap and just feed a couple of times a day, just a few of the little brine shrimps though. The leftover is good for about a week. We have a 30-gal freshwater tank as well, and they also get the brine shrimp, along with the dried bloodworms and occassionally flake mixed in.

Oh, and another site my son said he likes for his betta fish care-

So whatever kind of fish you get, enjoy and hope something I shared helps! Have a lovely day!

ZandersMama replied: Are there any allergies in the family? If not I would suggest a cat. I've had a ton of pets and my cat is easiest.

sparkys2boys replied: Marie.. get a bunny..lol!! I swear that make wonderful, clean, easy to care for pets. Start up will cost a little (cage, food, bedding, water bottle, treats, etc) but then it is sooo worth it. My kids love our wabbit as we call him. Think about it!!

CantWait replied:

The closest town after Fredericton that would have a pet store with fish would be Moncton which about an hour and a half away. sad.gif

grapfruit replied: Is there a super Wal-Mart or a Meijer near by (do you have Meijer where you live?!?!) They usually have a small section of fish and stuff. I've known people to buy betas from there that seeminly last forever!

coasterqueen replied: I'm sorry to hear that Marie. sad.gif Fish are so hard to keep.

holley79 replied: I had hermit crabs when I was little and loved them. Just clean their habitat and I had two that were handleable.

CantWait replied:
We have WalMart, no Meijer.
The fish at Wally World don't look much better, but it might be worth a try. Thanks for the reminder.

A&A'smommy replied: I'm sorry ya'll have had such a bad time with fish, it seems like that place shouldn't be selling them either!!!

Hermit crabs are GREAT I have had 3 my first one lived for two years, and second one for nearly that long also. (my 3rd one didn't live that long my uncle caught him at the beach and gave it to me) I still remember my first one his name was flash (he was really fast, my cousin got on at the same time as me and in the cage he would run all over the place and crawl all over his crab so I let him name mine flast lol) I LOVE that little thing.. they do pinch though so you have to be KINDA careful and they are SUPER easy to take care of thumb.gif

Kirstenmumof3 replied: hug.gif hug.gif Sorry that once again Anthony lost another fish! I honestly don't know what other pet you could get. Hamsters are low maintenance.
