REACTION TO A TETANUS SHOT

JAYMESMOM wrote: I received a tetanus shot on Friday and by Sunday my whole entire upper arm hurts. I have a huge red spot larger than a silver dollar, and I'm getting numbness in my fingers and paid shooting down my arm. It is starting to itch now and I can't sleep at night since I normally sleep on my right side. The nurse at my doctors office wasn't helpful this morning - said maybe they hit a nerve and take some benadryl. huh.gif So I go in at 11 to see the doctor.

I had never heard of a reaction like this and was really confused and now I am kinda scared wondering if they did hit a nerve. unsure.gif

PascosGirl replied: Yeah, that is strange. Pain is perfectly normal though. Numbness isn't. Good thing you are going to the doctor. Let us know how it goes.

JAYMESMOM replied: sad.gif I Am back from the doctors and unfortunately I am still in limbo. The doctor said I am definitely having a reaction to the tetanus shot but is unsure who extensive. I have to take advil or motrin and do alternating hot/cold packs. Since I am still nursing I can't take any perscription anti-inflammatories. If I still have the same symptoms on Wednesday, I have to go back for more testing. So I may not be on much since it hurts to type and takes to long to do it one handed.

So now I wait and hope for the best.

PascosGirl replied:
Well I hope you feel better. Some people have adverse reactions. What did you get the shot for in the first place? Had it been over 7 years since your last one??

JAYMESMOM replied:
It has been over 10 years since I had one so the doctor wanted me to get a booster. Thats what I get for trying to think ahead. LOL

gr33n3y3z replied: not strange at all
I've had my upper arm swell and red like an apple and so hot you could fry an egg on my arm along with a bad heaache.
I have not had that shot in over 25 years bc of that.

ediep replied: I had a tetnus shot a few years ago and my arm hurt for a few days. There was a red spot where they gave the shot and it was warm to touch. NOT very fun at all!
Hope you feel better soon.

JAYMESMOM replied: I have feeling back in my fingers with no numbness and the pain is not too bad. My arm is very week and I have a feeling that I am going to have to work really hard to build back up the muscle strength. So note to myself - no more tetanus shots for me. You live and you learn. sad.gif

DVFlyer replied: Ouch!

Sounds to me like they hit a nerve in your arm. Used to happen to me when I got allergy shots. That same D#$% nurse every time too biggrin.gif

I don't understand why the muscle in your arm would have atrophied (sp?) so much. The strength should be affected only as long as the trauma to your arm exists. Once that's gone, you should be back in business.

Do you know if Tetanus does something with muscle tissue?

JAYMESMOM replied: I don't know if it affects the muscle tissue. I haven't had one since who knows when. But I won't get another unless I need it due to something. I still have a knot in the spot where I got the shot so I am hoping once that goes away the muscle will be okay. I am keeping my fingers crossed. smile.gif

ferocity302 replied: I just had a tenanus shot about 2 weeks ago and had never had one since I was a kid. I had the same type of reaction (not the numbness though) and freaked out. The nurse was almost amused that I didn't have a clue that it was normal to have the huge knot on my arm and all the pain. She said it would last about a week and sometimes longer.

I still have a little knot but the pain is gone. I bruised but it finally went away.

lisar replied: I havent had a tetnaus shot since I was 13 I am 25 now. I dont like the way they feel afterwards. If I need one for something then i will go and get one. untill then I am good to go.
