Question regarding teens - clothes
mysweetpeasWil&Wes wrote: No debates please...but I have a question. What age do you think it's appropriate for a person to wear alcohol logo'ed clothes...for example, a t-shirt that advertises a beer? Or maybe a shirt with a pot leaf on it? I remember the little mushroom necklaces that people wore when I was in HS. How would you feel if your child came home with one?
There was a young boy at the gym today with a Corona t-shirt on...he could have been 15 or maybe even 12...not sure. He was pretty little IMO. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I don't believe what you wear is a sign of what you do necessarily, but it makes me question whether my kids are doing it merely to look "cool" or merely just expressing their individuality OR because hey, they like the beer! LOL! It's a tough one for me!
kit_kats_mom replied: I know that they give those shirts out for free all over the place. I'd not like it if my child wore one (heck, I don't even own one) but if we were poor and it was free...well maybe. I guess a new beer shirt is better than an old ratty snoopy one.
cameragirl21 replied: idk, my first thought was that teens shouldn't be wearing this stuff at all but then i realized that when i was in HS i had a flashlight with the marlboro cigarette company written on it that i got at a modeling gig and i loved that flashlight b/c it came in very handy when i was trying to unlock the car or house at night but i was not a smoker in high school or ever, really, i mean sure i've smoked socially at parties and all but smoking is one thing i'm totally against since i have asthma so i guess it's kind of ironic that i had that flashlight, it certainly wasn't a reflection of my being a smoker cuz i wasn't. that's a tough call but i will give you kudos for going to the gym, that's where i should be going instead posting about grilled cheese sandwiches and other foods here on this board as i did today.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I like how you think Cary!
Calimama replied: I dont know. I'm 19 and I dont wear those shirts.. but I also dont drink.
C&K*s Mommie replied: I would not care either way. I would have a larger conflict if they were consuming the alcohol moreso than if they are merely wearing a shirt.
Cece00 replied: I brought one home from New Orleans when I was 13 and my mom was TICKED. I dont think I ever had one after that As an adult, obviously that doesnt matter anymore, but I can see why she was mad...I wouldnt want my 13 yr old sporting that either.
gr33n3y3z replied: Lets just say I dont like a lot of teeshirts I see today(rock bands) and would I let my kids wear them no
hawkshoe replied: I would not let my school age child wear one of these. Perhaps when they entered college I would be more comfortable with it. No way would I ever stand for my kid wearing one with a pot leaf (or any other drug) on it in my presence.
luvbug00 replied: I don't care what my kids wear ( with minor exceptions depending on gender) they can express themselves any way they want to.
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: I had a Corona shirt when I was in High School...In fact is was one of my running shirts. I am pretty sure my dad gave it to me after getting it free somewhere. i have to say as a parent I don't thik I would let my child buy it but I wouols let them wear it.
Though take it as you will...one of my favorite sweatshirts now is a Guiness ine and I don;t particularly like Guiness. I fif get funny looks wearing it while visably pregnant
J-rod replied: ditto
i have worn "dirty" shirts since HS. alcohol, liquor, big johnson, hooters, just to name a few. im sure some people think im a trashy alcoholic drug head....but me and my friends/family know the truth. i wear them to get a reaction out of people
Boys r us replied: I think it's more about them thinking they look cool with it on than anything else. So I wouldn't mind too much if it were a beer logo on the shirt...I however would be very disapproving of a shirt with a pot leaf!
coasterqueen replied: This would be my thinking too, but I won't know til I get to that point. I really don't see a beer t-shirt to be anything more terrible than some of the t's that are out there with sayings on them, even the ones they sell in the stores to teens are sometimes foul IMO.
stella6979 replied: With the amount of underage drinking that goes on I would not allow my child to wear this type of shirt. To me, it's like advertising and I wouldn't care if they thought it was "cool". It's not cool.
holley79 replied: I'm not really sure. Just totally depends on the situation, the actual shirt. I have concert shirts that have beer advertistments on them and would allow my daughter to wear them because the first thing to catch your eye is the HOT country singer. I do have corona shorts and shirts though and I guess one day Annika will put them on.
ETA: I don't think the T Shirt makes the child, the child makes the child.
CantWait replied: When they're old enough to drink it, do it.
I'd be ripping that shirt off my kids back before I let him wear it out the house. To me it's advertising, and using an underage child to advertise drinking alcohol and doing drugs is just plain wrong in my opinion.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I'd have to agree with Marie on this one. Not until you are of age or out of my house then you can do what you want, but until then, no. My house, my rules, so no. Hubby might disagree with me on that one though. BUT, he's not here to defend himself this week! HA HA!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I wouldn't let either of my children wear a shirt that advertised beer or drugs in my presence, ever. I don't care if they are 30...they can take it off when around me. Just mine and DH's wishes and they will respect that.
ETA: If they own one before college, it will get trashed. When they move off to college I won't know what they wear (obviously).
