Question please help me - about Jacob (sorry long)
jacobsmama wrote: Hey Everyone...Hope all is doing well. I just wanted to ask you guys what you think about something..Remember I told you that Jacob had a febrile seizure right before christmas and had to go by EMS to hospital and stay a couple days and he also had one when he was about a 8-9 months old.
WELL I'm getting concerned..The other night he woke up like midnight and he was sitting straight up in his crib facing forward just crying this awful cry like he was having a bad dream or something? SO I went in his room and when I saw him just sitting there crying I got nervous because he is always standing up at this one spot in his crib. ANYHOW.. I tapped my hands and said come here honey?? and he just sat there like he didn't here me I said it several times and he didn't answer me (very unusual ) SO I picked him up and he was just crying and I turned the light on and said hey mama is here it's ok what is a matter? and when he went to say I don't know it was very slurred and So I got more nervous and I woke DH up. Well early that day we had a scrapbooking party at my sisters house and he only got 1/2 hour nap and I was at ER with my dad until 10pm (whole other post ) But he was VERY VERY tired. And DH said he is fine honey he is just really tired and I think maybe he had bad dream. Well he was letting his head fall back almost like he was lethargic and just kept crying It was really freaking me out.
I took him into the kitchen and gave him some ice pieces I thought maybe his throat was sore the way he was acting and he wouldn't get a drink (also very unusual) So finally he calmed down but his speech still seemed slurred. Finally he went to bed and the next day woke up fine!!!!
MY QUESTION----Do you think he could had a seizure? I mean the only 2 he has had he had a fever and after the 1st one he had a brain wave test done and it showed no signs of epilepsy but this time they just said yeah it is febrile seizure. SO do I call the ped?? I'm just not sure what to do...A lady at work said children with seizures when they get overtired can be seizure like and act this way but according to the ped he doesn't have epilepsy just has febrile seizures that he will out grow...Do I demand another brain wave test or wait this out??
I'm sorry Just concerned....
P.S. The way he was acting that night is nothing AT ALL like the other 2 times he had a seizure but i'm telling you just wasnt' normal.
luvmykids replied: Sorry to hear all that. I haven't had any experience with these kinds of things, but the slurred speech would bother me. Did you try calling your ped/talking to a nurse? Thoughts and prayers to you.
jacobsmama replied: I haven't yet because it just happened 2 night ago and DH seems to think i'm overreacting...So that is why i'm wondering if you all think I insist on test b/c ped already said last time just febrile and no need for it..???? DH says We all do that with our speech when we are tired which believe me he was very tired..IDK
C&K*s Mommie replied:
There would not be any harm in insisting on it. I would. Even if it to put your mind at ease. That is your son, you care for him and you want the best. I would insist on having another test done, and I would call the nurse at the pedi first thing in the AM.
BEST WISHES!!
CAMSMOM1 replied: I agree with you, I don't think slurred speech is normal...even if he didn't have a seizure. He could've had a mild seizure before you went in to get him. I know that as a 1st time Mommy, I can be very overprotective and a worry wort. But I want the best for my son. I have NEVER regreted taking him to the doctors, even if they tell me he's fine and we fine nothing wrong with him. At least I leave with peace of mind. If my son was having seizures, and having slurred speech...I would be in there the next day damanding every possible test. And if they found nothing, I would get a 2nd opionion. But that's just me. That's why I pay big bucks to have health insurance, and if I feel he is needing medical attention, then I will take him no matter what DH says. If I don't have peace about something, then I follow my instincts. So follow your gut. You have a mother's intuition and you know when something isn't right. If he is acting fine now, and his speech has improved, then you could possible wait. But it could be symptoms of a seizure going to happen. I know it would make you feel better for him to be seen. And it won't hurt if you get tests done. Let us know how it goes. Prayers for your family. Ann
huggybugboy replied: I dont know anything about seizures but if you think he was acting abnormally then, ABSOLUTELY YES go see a doctor. And I would get a second opinion on the epilepsy if thats what you think it is. Remember: A mothers instinct is the best indicator.
Our thoughts and prayers to you.
Kentuckychick replied: I'm new to the site and just wanted to say that I'm so sorry to hear you're experiencing this with your son.
As a Child Life Specialist in training I've seen so many parents who said that their doctors told them it was "just" a swollen gland, or "just" a fever, etc...
I think that what matters is that as a parent you go with your gut instinct. He's your son and you know what is normal for him. In all likelihood your husband is right and he was just really tired, perhaps he was still half asleep and having the bad dream when you came in the room.
And chances are your doctor is right as well and the seizure was febrile and there's nothing to worry too much about, but if your mind will not be put at ease until further testing is done, then I say tell the doctor you want further testing and don't give up until it's given.
He's your child and you only want what's best for him... and it's your right to do what you have to do to get that!!
You will be in my thoughts.
PhiMuMommy replied: yes... there are different types of seizures my aunt has ones like that all the time.. she zones out and when she comes to it's minutes or even hours later and she's exhausted... take him to a DR ASAP!
hope i'm wrong... sending luck vibes that i am..
Hillbilly Housewife replied: You said you knoew something wasn't right - so take him to the doctor's, and insist.
The doctor's don't see your son everyday... they don't know what's normal for him, you do.
ediep replied: I agree with everyone else too...I'd take him to the doc to be sure
Do you think it could have been a night terror?? I haven't had experience with them but my neighbor has and a friend of mine was just telling about them the other night. It sounded a lot like what jacob was doing. The reson the speach might have been slurred and he wasn't making sense is becasue he was still techncally asleep.
anyway, hope you get some answers soon
jacobsmama replied: I don't know i'm not familiar with night terrors...I did call the Dr this AM they wont' just order the test but I have to go and see him tommorrow..I will let you know. Thanks everyone for all the thoughts, advice and praers.
fashionmumofboys replied: Sorry, I don't know nothing about seizures, but sorry to hear the scary espisode you had the other night with your son.
I would call your Ped and go with your gut feeling. Get your son checked out again asap.
Good luck.
CosmetologyMommy replied: I think he might be a little young for night terrors. I would go to a doctor. Good luck, Keep us posted.
hailieandmommy replied: I hope he is ok
CantWait replied: I would insist on more testing...that just doesn't sound right. If it had just happened when he woke up, then I would say it might have been just a bad dream that he couldn't snap out of, but from what you're saying is that the behaviour is consistent at different times throughout the day.
Good Luck and keep us posted
2whippets replied: Hi there, My daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy almost two years ago. There are several different types of seizures which are devided in two catagories, partial, which only includes part of the brain or generalized, which includes the whole brain. There were a few things a read on this post which concerned me. First, that you were calling to your son and he didn't answer you and the fact that he was very tired the next day. Typically, after one has a grand mal (convulsive) seizure they enter into what is called a post ictal period. Having a seizure exhausts not just the brain, but the entire body. My daughter will fall into a deep sleep which will last anywhere from a few moments or she'll be groggy for a couple of days. She also has seizures called absence seizures in which she appears to be day dreaming. She can't hear us because she's unconscious (although she appears to be awake, only daydreaming). These seizures only last for a few seconds are are very hard to catch unless your right there, talking to her.
If you are very concerned, request a 24-72 EEG. We intially had a waking and a sleep deprived EEG which lasted about 20 minutes. They didn't pick anything up. However, after we had a 48 hour EEG, we found out that our daughter was having dozens of absence as well as nocturnal grand mal seizures. I knew something was wrong about a year before she was diagnosed but I didn't follow my maternal instinct (stupid, I know). I had no idea it was epilepsy!! If I were you, I would request a longer EEG, particularly because your son has a history of febrile seizures. Also, if he does have epilepsy, fevers will sometimes provoke a seizure. GOOD LUCK! Hope this helps.
BTW, My daughter is under treatment and has been completely seizure free for over a year now.
jcc64 replied: My son has epilepsy as well- benign rolandic epilepsy- to be exact. We received our diagnosis after an abnormal sleep deprived EEG. He's only had 4 seizures total, and we're expecting him to outgrow this by adolescence. I believe the original poster did seek medical attention- I pm'ed her but never heard back. Not sure what sort of diagnosis they got. Feel free to pm me if you want.
Kaitlin'smom replied: Did you take him in? I was also thinking Night Terror, they can happen at ANY age. My daughter had one when she was a few months old, scared the heck out of me I was so freeked I made DH call 911 she had a blank look in her eyes cring (not a normal cry) would not nurse, was kinda like a rag doll, very scary. Once she woke up it was like nothing was wrong course that was right before the paramedics showed up
moped replied: This is what my neice has as well - and I think she has had 3 in her life - she is 10 and the Dr's are confident that she will outgrow it as well!
