Question for breastfeeding moms
alice&arik wrote: My friend just had a baby girl on Monday and she is breastfeeding. Well the nurse's at the hospital told her that breastfed babies don't burp. Because I had asked her if she got any gas drops. And then she told me that. I told her that yes they do burp. I don't know why they would tell her that. She said that the nurse she had today was a little flaky because she knew her from work.
When I had Arik at the hospital they made sure he burped before he could go back to the nursery.
What do you guys think?
Serenity0811 replied: When I had my son I was nursing him from the beginning. I had to burp him or else he would get fussy. He would bring up his gas when he was burped. Even though you nurse I feel you should still burp the baby.
mammag replied: Yes, I've burped all my breastfed babies, you get the same explosive side effects if you don't.
Becky74 replied: I know both of mine burped, might not have been everytime, but I always at least tried. I wonder why she said that, some foods we eat makes the baby VERY gassy *cough*cough* like cabbage *cough*cough*
atlantamomof2 replied: WHAT?!? Of course they burp! You do have to make sure you burp them even if they've fallen asleep while nursing because air can easily get trapped in their little tummies. I still had to use gas drops with DS a lot, even with burping.
I don't know why that nurse would say that, but tell her to please burp her new little bundle!
alice&arik replied: I did! I gave her a heads up on what foods to avoid too. Like chocolate.
Jamison'smama replied: My little BF guy burps like a man so that nurse is silly--my hospital nurse told me that BF babies have stinkier poop than formula babies---I let her know that was incorrect as well.
Chocolate???? I am eating it right now (love those Take 5 candy bars) what does chocolate do?
alice&arik replied: I heard that chocolate was hard on babies tummies. That their tummies can't digest it. So then they get a bad stomach ache. That is what I was told, and I could always tell with Arik if I ate chocolate he would get fussy.
CCTandME replied: My oldest wasn't really a burper, the other 2 were. All 3 were BF.
Kaitlin'smom replied: okay some one needs to set that nurse streight, all babies burp and need to be BF or not. I BF and always burped her, or at least tried sometimes she burped and others she did not.
MomToMany replied: BF babies tend to not burp as much, although there are exceptions. They tend to swallow less air and more milk, but the parents should still try to burp them. I know I did .
Amanda8 replied: If I didn't burp her she would cry and be up all night. I don't burp her now but I did for the first few months.
momma2emily replied: I always tried to burp Emily but i only got maybe one or two burps a week lol. Now that she is eating more solids and drinking water she burps more now lol.
JAYMESMOM replied: My daughter definitely burped and any nurse who says BF babies don't burp needs to be re-educated. They may not burp as much and I never stopped her from nursing to burp her. But when she was done we definitely made sure she burped or we would pay for it later.
jem0622 replied:
Um, they need to reassign that nurse. LOL.
Most times, if not every time, that my girls nurse...they sure do burp. Spitting up can vary from baby to baby.
ZandersMama replied: I know my son definitely burps and he was EBF. He burps louder then his dad sometimes. I never had problems with choclete but Taco Bell was a major problem, along with donair meat, pepperoni, anything good lol.
mama3x replied: My nurse and our ped told us that BF babies in general burp less than bottle-fed. This I find true in the sense that my semi-formula-fed DS#1 just had to burp after a bottle and did so multiple times. It was easy to burp him!
DD and DS #2 however are totally BF and burp(ed) once per feeding. DD was great at latching without getting any air into her and if she did took a minute or two. DS is harder to burp though, it takes more time than DD!
supermom replied: I always at least attempted to burp all mine (BF all 5). Now, of course, as they get older, it's not such a worry. But sometimes they would burp and sometimes they wouldn't but you need to at least make an attempt....
And yes, what you eat can have an effect. If it makes you gassy, generally it will affect baby same way. Each child was different, different things make them act differently.
