Question about Pedia Care

Danalana wrote: The only medication I have ever given Kade is tylenol (for vaccinations or teething). He is currently teething....his third tooth just broke the surface the other day and his other top one is white (the gum, anyway).
Anyway, his nose has been runny/snotty/stuffy for about 2 weeks. I know it's because of the teething, no matter what some pediatricians say. He has no other symptoms. They don't sell Pedia Care for infants anymore because of the danger of giving the wrong dosage, I assume. My SIL gave me some to try for him, and I did. I just gave him 1.5 mm, after analyzing the dosage for kids age 2. i figured 1.5 was safe. He is sleeping and seems fine, but I don't think it made a difference with his nose at all. I have been using a cool mist humidifier for over a week...I don't know what else I can do. Do you think I just might not have given him the right amount? I tried calling my Ped, but didn't get through yet. I don't like the idea of medicating him at all, but my SIL claims it is a wonder drug. He's 7 1/2 months old, FWIW.

ZandersMama replied: I just use saline on the kids, works great

boyohboyohboy replied: dana, my ped always told us, that kids really dont mind the runny nose...this if its bothering them to just use the saline drops, other wise tylenol for achiness if it gets bad.
other wise to just let it run its course.
He also said if they were to stuffy to sleep then to use benadryl for that symptom.
hope that helps.

momofone replied: Saline is good if you do not want to spray directly into nose you can spray into a cup and soak up with cotton swap and gently put in his nose.

Danalana replied: Thanks...I've been using the saling, periodically, but I can't tell that it makes much of a difference. I can't believe this has been going on for 2 weeks! And you're right, he doesn't seem bothered by it. Just bothered when i suck out his nose or try to wipe it tongue.gif

Danalana replied: Oh, and I meant "ml" instead of "mm" huh.gif

boyohboyohboy replied:
also being a nurse, I have had some pretty yucky conversations with the drs..
but one dr told me that when you blow your nose, you are causing inflammation to the lining of the mucous membranes in your nose so it "swells" making you feel stuffier, when you blow..so its best not to blow just wipe..
so maybe that might be the same case of using that nose bulb syringe. I always hated those things..i mean does it really work if by the time you get it to suck out the yuck if the kid is crying and hysterical over the whole thing? dont they just get stuffier?

I think if he has had it for two weeks, 14 days is the typical course for a cold, it might some fall allergies? does benedryl help?
caleb was on singular when he was about 2yrs old for fall allergies, then he out grew them.
I hope he gets better soon.
I was thinking also, that a cool mist humidifier helps at night for nasal congestion, but our asthma dr always said not more then a few nights because it makes the room moist and causes mold and thats a whole nother issue!!!!

MommyToAshley replied: I was always hesitant to give Ashley any medication until she was over 2, and even then sparingly. (luckily she was hardly ever sick) Personally, if he is not bothered by the runny nose, I would wait and talk to your ped before giving him any more medication. Two weeks seems like quite a long time to have the same symptoms, I would have him checked out to make sure it isn't somethign else, jmo.

Hiope he feels better soon. hug.gif

msoulz replied: No cold meds under 4

I just saw this on MSNBC and thought you might like to read it. hug.gif

Crystalina replied:
The saline worked for Bella but not for Evan. I used (and still do) Little Noses Decongestant. It's very gentle on their nose and clears them up right away. Some places only sell the Little Noses Saline but Wal-Mart sells both. It goes fast this time of year though. I've been in there 4 times to get it and the slot has been empty. rolleyes.gif

Danalana replied: Thank you!
And thanks for the link, Mary! I actually didn't want to give him anything...my BIL and SIL gave him pedia care when they were keeping him (once), and it really kind of upset me. I thought they should have asked me. I know they raised a baby, but that doesn't mean i wanna do everything just like they did. I mean, they thought I was crazy because I didn't wanna give Kade solids through a feeder. Why would I do that when he has been a master at eating from a spoon since 4 months? I'm gonna have to tell them not to give him anymore. And the article was right...I couldn't tell he had had anything. He has only had it 3 times, and I won't be giving it to him anymore.

PrairieMom replied:
Thats the way i feel about my little RSV patients. our protocol states that we will suck their noses out with a bulb every time I go into the room. (every 2 -4 hours) plus what ever the RN is doing, but good grief! I think unless they are completely stuffed up, and they can't breath then leave them alone! all it does is make them mad and cry, then their noses are immediately stuffed up again.

Ahh cold and flu season... and endless river of snot. rolleyes.gif

Danalana replied: I think his is finally ending, thank God biggrin.gif
