Products you find lazy
mckayleesmom wrote: Have you ever seen new products advertised and your thought is "the world is getting so lazy"....
I just saw one the other night for already cut up frozen potatoes that you can turn into mashed potatoes.
I make homeade mashed potatoes all the time and it really doesn't take long at all. I could see it being handy for somebody who works late, but in reality it really doesn't take that long to make. It takes me maybe 5 minutes to peel the potatoes, chop them up and put them to boil. Then it takes me another 2 to mash them up with my mixer.
I actually find the store bought alot more time consuming and complicated because you have to measure everything out.
mckayleesmom replied: Also...those edible straws for drinking the milk out of your bowl.....Now, I think the idea was great, but 1. I can buy a whole box of cereal for that price 2. I could just buy regular straws for cheaper and 3. If I had to tip my bowl as a kid to drink the milk...then so should everyone else...
luvmykids replied: Those frozen pb&j sandwiches....how hard is it to MAKE one? There are lots of them but I can't think of them off the top of my head. I saw those potatos too, it took me a minute to figure out what they were because I kept thinking they had to be more than frozen mashed potatos
PrairieMom replied: I JUST saw that commercial like 2 minutes ago. They are advertised as "Real" mashed potatoes. Okay, so really, since when is something that comes out of a bag in your freezer "real?" We are totally being tricked into thinking that it is normal and healthy to eat things that are all pre-processed, and that it is impossible to make things the old fashioned way. granted, the potatoes are not the worst example, but really, its getting bad anymore.
luvmykids replied: The sad thing is, we'll pay MORE for these unhealthy things I hate when I hear people complain that it's too expensive to eat healthy....all those processed foods are so much more expensive per serving.
mckayleesmom replied: those pb and j's things are funny. For that price you can buy a whole jar of pb and jelly and probably the bread too.
grandma replied: How about the crustless bread? Do you guys buy that? When the kids come over I just remove the crust with a knife...lol And the peanut butter and jelly mixed in a jar? It looks cool, but I've never bought it.
mckayleesmom replied: I didn't even know they made crustless bread...
How about hard boiled eggs already peeled? I think they would be good if you are having a big party or something and need alot of eggs, but just for everyday is kind of wierd. I remember when I worked in a hospital we had those and they were in our fridges for months because they were shelf stable...still kind of grossed me out.
mckayleesmom replied: I forgot
WARNING: THIS PAGE CONTAINS OTHER PEOPLES POINT OF VIEWS. YOU MIGHT USE SOME OF THESE PRODUCTS. PLEASE DON'T TAKE OFFENCE BECAUSE OTHERS MIGHT BUY THE PRODUCTS YOU DON'T LIKE EITHER....
grandma replied: Your a mom - your suppose to know about crustless bread...lol Hard boiled eggs already peeled? No thanks, I'll take 10 mintues and make my own..lol
mckayleesmom replied: I'm a mom, but my kids aren't picky. I have always had an Eat what I give you or starve policy....
forourkiddos replied: I think it is so sad that families dont take the time to make food anymore. So much can be learned during that time: 1. How to cook 2. What happened at school 3. Value of taking time and interest to accomplish something 4. math skills etc.
I think the occasional meal in a bag is fine, but do we wonder why there are so many unhealthy kids (the food we feed them and the products we use in our homes which can make them sick too). When are people going to realize this and start making changes/?????
Athena
mckayleesmom replied: I think meals in a bag every once in a while never killed anyone. I just find some of the stuff silly because if people actually timed it...its not any faster. You still have to boil those potatoes or nuke them and then put your ingredience in there. The sandwich one too....fine for a snack, but its just as easy to make it.
AlexsPajamaMama replied: I have never heard of that crustless bread either I have seen white bread that is really wheat bread.
When I saw the title of this post I thought of those frozen mashed potatoes. I agree with the pb&j too.
PrairieMom replied: I totally get what you are saying. I have really made the green switch over the past year and a half or so, but once you start, you start seeing things that other people don't. Its so obvious to me what is happening, what is in our foods, and cleaning products, actually, in everything we use, that i can't believe that every one else doesn't see it too, but everyone isn't like minded, which makes the world as wonderful as it is. It is frustrating at times, other mommies look at me like I am nut-so some times, but you can't make everyone see things the way you see them right?
And don't assume that I don't have meals in a bag in my freezer too...
grandma replied: That's a great policy! Honest I'm not making up the crustless bread. We recently ordered from the Scwans truck...yeah we're lazy..lol
PrairieMom replied: us too! I have hungry children the majority of the time.
mckayleesmom replied: Not here...But again, mine aren't too picky and usually eat what is served. They even like vegetables. Russell will eat anything, but Mckaylee will see somebody else not liking something and she will try it herself. The only thing she has never really liked is eggs (although she will eat them sometimes) and milk in her cereal, but she will drink milk, so I don't find it a big deal.
TheOaf66 replied: that can opener thing you put on top and push the button and it automatically goes around the can and does it
HuskerMom replied: We got one of those for Christmas last year and it's never been out of the box. I'd much rather just use my regular can opener.
mckayleesmom replied: I think they are great for older people though. My mom bought my grandmother one because she has trouble with arthritus....
Funny you mention this though. The other day when I was getting supplies for the hurricane. My mom asked me how I was going to open the cans without electricity....I was like Duh mom..they still make can openers that you don't have to plug in....
mckayleesmom replied: LOL...what about THE CLAPPER....
mckayleesmom replied: Or HANDS FREE DIALING.....I think that is funny because half the time it never works. I remember my ex had one and he would say "call Brianne" and it would respond "calling Dad"...
DillsMommy replied: Hey, I love my Gizmo.
luvmykids replied: Us too
Colt has a friend who ONLY eats lunchables or ramen noodles. I told him when he was here I didn't have either, he tried to give me the sad face and say he'd just go hungry....I said "Ok!". About 5 minutes later he was eating the pb&j sandwich I'd made him
mckayleesmom replied: How does a kid live off lunchables and ramen noodles?
I rarely buy lunchables..usually only as a treat about 1 time a month. Those things are expensive.
mckayleesmom replied: Leithan bought one of those Handy Vacs for zip lock backs. It's suppose to suck the air out of the bag. I could have smacked him for paying 8 bucks for that thing. It took him 20 minutes to suck the air out and it didn't even do a good job. Plus you have to buy special bags to do it of course.
I would rather just push the air out of the bag before I ziplock it.....
My2Beauties replied: I do have an electric can opener but we have a regular can opener too. I even think regular instant mashed potatoes are a little lazy, I think they just taste nasty and like Bri said, too much measuring.
mckayleesmom replied: I admit I use to be an instant mash potatoe person...Till I tried my friends moms and she told me how to make them. Now I don't know what I was thinking and on the rare occassion that I make the instant kind...I barely touch them because I think they taste gross to me now and really dry.
My2Beauties replied: Oh I so did too, then when I learned how to make regular ones, I'm like you I can't stand the taste of instant.
Boo&BugsMom replied: We have an electric can opener as well and I use it all the time.
Troy, my dearest...I don't think it was a can opener you saw! I think Troy was talking about the jar opener that we saw on tv not long ago. It was a jar opener that you place on top of the jar and it circles around the jar and opens it. It took like 5 minutes just to open a single jar! Perhaps for an elderly person it would come in handy, but that's about it. Oh, and the lady in the commercial was about 35/40.
I have used the PB&J sandwiches. I don't often, but when we'd take field trips with all my daycare kids they came in really handy when I had to make 8 lunches at a time. They are not good for you though, and perfer to make my own mainly because of the nutrition factor because I buy whole grain bread.
I love instant mashed potatoes. We are not big potatoe people to begin with, but I do like the instant stuff. If we have potatoes we usually have loaded baked potatoes on the grill.
mckayleesmom replied: My grandma has one of those too. Me and my mom went in on one for her for xmas one year. Since my grandpa died she finds there are things she can't do with her hands like opening jars.
Boo&BugsMom replied: That would also be a good product for Troy's grandma who has really horrible arthritis in her hands. Now, they should have aimed the commercial towards the elderly and people like that...not a 35 year old lazy woman.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I find most pre-packaged foods lazy, actually, and I don't wonder why people complain about high grocery bills.
Especially when you start taking into consideration the worth of your time...
for example... 10 pounds of potatoes that you have to rinse and wrap in foil to cook on the bbq... 2$... plus 2$ for the box of foil.. OR, you can pay 2$ for THREE pre-rinsed pre-wrapped potatoes...figure out the time it takes you to rinse and wrap 3 potatoes, and the time you've saved by purchasing the prewrapped ones... if you're paying 2$ to save 2 mintues of your time, imagine the money you could be saving if you'd involve your family to help.
It's a sore point, a point of contention to me.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Those disposable wash cloths for babies made by Huggies. I think they already have soap in them. That seems lazy to me! No offense. But who doesn't have a couple real wash cloths with a little soap?
And yes, a lot of the frozen meals in a bag seem really lazy and unhealthy IMO. My kids love frozen waffles, so I too eat things frozen and quick, but some of the options are really sick these days.
lisar replied: I buy those things.
TANNER'S MOM replied: I will admit to using processed foods alot more than I should. But for me it's a time factor. When I worked it was so hard. I got home at six, had to feed and water that took an hour barring anything going wrong. Come in and make supper and then it's 7:45.. tell the kids to take a bath and work on homework. So by then it's 9 o'clock and I haven't sat down. But wait now I have to do laundry and clean up the kitchen so it's bedtime and I haven't sat down.
I don't do the PB&J...we love the real thing. Nice and crunchy. We do keep Ramon noodles around for an after school snack the kids can make before I get home. But I will admit to the prepackaged crock pot dinners that I can just put on and leave all day and have supper when I get home!
Oh and canned chili! I hate the way it tastes personally. But my kids will eat it like it's going out of style.
I hate canned biscuits too. But I will make them in a pinch.
mckayleesmom replied: I know...its much easier to just buy the soap and wash your washcloth in the washing machine.
TANNER'S MOM replied: Oh I wanted to add that I hate lunchables. They are way to expensive and not very healthy at all. Tanner always wants them and I say NO No NO. If it a school field trip then I will make his lunch and it will be alot healthier. I am suprised at how many kids have pops at the field trips. I usually make Tanner take something like Water, juice, capri sun as a treat. But never like a 20oz of coke! That drives me crazy.
Oh, one thing I do and it drives me crazy and is very costly is bottled water in the 20oz from the gas station. I pay 1.29 for 20 oz of water. I drink it from the bottle b/c I think it goes down faster for some reason. But I have learned to buy the water by the gallon and pour it in a water bottle and just wash my water bottles out. I save alot of money that way.
mckayleesmom replied: I do keep some prepackaged stuff in the house....Only because sometimes dh works really late and I don't want to cook twice...
Celestrina replied: They can come in handy when you are travelling. One less liquid you have to worry about on the plane, car, etc.
luvmykids replied: Colt had told me this kid brings a lunchable everyday, I thought he was exaggerating When I told his mom I got him to eat the sandwich her jaw dropped and she asked how I did it....I told her and she got mad
Calimama replied: Some Troops.
I send those on deployment.
mckayleesmom replied: LOL...My husband is a fan of baby wipes when he was out in the field.
mckayleesmom replied: She is probably only mad because you got her kid to do something she couldn't which means she is a pushover... Did she seriously think you were going to run out to the grocery store to accomodate her child?
Calimama replied: Yeah DH used to live off baby wipes until I got pregnant and we discovered the other kind.
Boo&BugsMom replied: They do come in very handy for traveling. I've bought them for when we go camping or take a trip up north.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Sounds like mom is a BIG pushover.
Nina J replied: I don't really know. I never buy frozen carrots that are already cut because it's just easier to buy carrots and cut them yourself.
I never use car washes either. I am not paying to use a car wash when I can wash my own car with a bucket. It costs like, $4 to get a bottle of car wash soap that lasts for months. Plus I use one bucket for washing, empty it and one more bucket for rinsing. As opposed to the ton of water car washes use.
I make my own mashed potato.
I don't find a lot of products lazy, but I try to save money on things. Like, I don't buy expensive soap. I get a four pack of lavender soap for about $2. It works the same, it doesn't dry my skin out, it smells nice. I don't buy bottled water.
Insanemomof3 replied: they sell hard boiled eggs already peeled?!?!?!?! I am so jealous. I work in a deli at a truck stop and I have to boil 4 dozen eggs a night and peel them myself. I may spend the extra cash myself to cheat at work. HA! lol
Kirstenmumof3 replied: I have to agree with you on this one. I guess because I work as a cashier in a grocery store, I see some pretty strange stuff. But a lot of people are buying the already made food. There is one product that comes in an icecream container, it's frozen and you just put it in your crockpot. We sell so many TV dinners, it's crazy and instand mashed potatoes. My ex-husband is bad for buying a lot of that kind of stuff. I don't know, when I was living with them, if I was going to make something for the crockpot, I made it the night before. Emily used to love helping me make dinner and now she couldn't be bothered. They eat too much processed food and I think that's why they are all getting to be a little over weight.
Of course then there is me, who eats way too much take out. I forgot how hard it was to cook for just one person. Maybe I need to buy a cookbook on how to cook for one.
grandma replied: As I was getting ready for work this morning the tv was either on HSN or QVC. This product came on that was perfect for this thread! It was called the Flip n Fold. It was a flat piece or soft flexible plastic that you put your clean towel on and as you flipped the sides in, it folded the towel. I ask, WHO would buy that?
