Prenatal workout - can't find one!
mysweetpeasWil&Wes wrote: I started working out when I was 7 weeks PG the first time around. They offered a Prenatal class at my old gym! I LOVED IT! The instructor knew exactly what to do and what NOT to do which was very helpful. I did it twice a week throughout my whole PG, but now that we moved, I can't find another class like that in my area!! Grrrrr! I've called around at all the gyms. 24 Hr Fitness told me that I can do the water classes, yoga and some of the aerobics, but I have very specific about what is right and wrong when I'm PG. I can't stand some teenaged instructor telling me "oh it's totally okay, I have PG women in my class alllllllll the time." I want someone who has been trained in prenatal exercise like my old instructor. I've heard of women who have done ab work because an instructor told them it was okay...she totally split the muscle (don't know the name) in her stomach!! Plus, there are certain exercises that can bring on prelabor (ie; certain leg moves). So does anyone have any advice? I belong to the YMCA now and typically do hard workouts like kickboxing, which is out of the question, but I'm thinking I may try swimming and yoga. Help...I want to continue to workout!
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: The Y has a prenatal water aerobics class. I think it is arround 12:00???(trying to remember the schedule) THat was what I wanted to do while pregnant but none of the gyms arround me where I was had one.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Oh really? Now I feel stupid...that's the gym I already belong too! But that's great! Does that mean I have to find a PG bathing suit??? LOL!
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: yep pg bathingsuit for you. Hopefully they will be on sale now that the season is officially over
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Prenatal water aerobics sound great. I wanted to do that when I was PG but it was too expensive. Otherwise I was going to suggest finding a prenatal workout video. That's probably what I'll end up doing the next time - I didn't exercise at all when I was pg and I'm paying for it now.
ediep replied: I only walked and did very ight free weight while I was preg. My Ob told me no running, and no aerobics unless its prenatal and my gym didn't offer that
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Rich and I went to Motherhood yesterday and they did have some on sale. But it would be hard to buy one now since I'm not showing and I have no boobs...hopefully I will fill out soon! Even the smalls were really big on top!
I looked online at the Y by my house and they didn't say anything about prenatal water aerobics. Maybe they have it at different ones. I may just do mommy and me class with Wil. That will be easy enough. And I may continue to walk on the treadmill and ride the bike. And maybe yoga if I tell the instructor.
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: Rae they do have it at your Y. I used to take a class that was just before it so everytime I went to the gym I got to see all the big pregnant bellies
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Okay, I'll go check it out as soon as I can get my car out of the driveway! Thanks!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: The ab muscles split anyway when you are pg.
I hope you are able to find a class that you like. There are several pregnant women in classes at our gym, but our instructors are trained and certified in prenatal exercise.
I love water aerobics, but no one around here offers anything convenient.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: You're right, but this was where you could see this strange bulge thing sticking out of her skin (well not sticking externally out). I guess this girl did this hard abs class throughout most of her PG!! It was terrible. She did damage. Our prenatal instructor was so mad at her. Why would she want good abs while she's PG?
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Ewwwwww!!!! *shudder*
Perhaps she thought it would make it easier to get back in shape after she had the baby? People do strange things. When I was pg I just ate all the time. I guess I should have stayed more active.
A&A'smommy replied: Did you decide what your going to do? I used videos during the first parts of my pregnancy and they worked and I felt WONDERFUl afterwards!!
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I'm going to wait until my PG is confirmed (meaning getting my first US and hearing the heartbeat) to start working out. I'll probably look into swimming at my gym or I have a " Prenatal Salsa and Yoga" video that I did when I was PG the last time. I just wish there was a class at my gym (non-swimming). I need other people to motivate me and an instructor, kwim?
wahm05 replied: I found a water aerobics class at my local YMCA, it was only offered at one of the locations in town though so if you live in a larger town check the other locations. You could also try the Denise Austin pregnancy video...she's a little hyper which can get annoying when your tummy's huge and all you can think about is that brownie in the kitchen...but it's still a pretty good video. Also, have you looked into mommy/toddler fitness classes? I didn't see how old your other dc is but there are some classes that are geared towards pregnant and post-pardum moms.
