Preference for one hand over the other?

MommyToAshley wrote: I remember reading somewhere about what age your child starts using one hand more than the other, but I can't remember the age. I think it was much older though.

Ashley still uses both hands pretty much equally. However, I think her right hand is stronger than her left hand. For example, she was playing with a toy remote control. It looks similar to a regular remote control except it is made with bright primary colors. It has buttons with numbers that squeak, an "on/off" button that flips back and forth, and a volume control that has a little knob that slides. However, the volume control knob is hard to slide (even for me). Ashley could slide the knob from right to left using her right hand, but when she tried to use her left hand to slide it from left to right, she couldn't. She wanted me to slide it for her, but I wanted her to try to figure it out so I told her to try again. I also wanted to see if she could slide it from left to right. Instead she rotated the remote control so that the button was back on the right side and then slid it from right to left again. She continued to slide the button, rotate it so that the knob was back on the right, and slide it from right to left again. LOL. She was pretty pleased with herself. rolling_smile.gif But, back to my original point... her right hand seemed to be stronger than her left hand. Anyone else notice a dominant hand?

I also noticed Ashley has a preference for stepping onto things with her right foot. If she wants to get on her Little Mermaid riding car or her rocking horse, she always steps on with her right foot. If she is on the wrong side to mount it with her right foot, then she will walk around to the other side or sit on it backwards and laugh about it. rolling_smile.gif

mummy2girls replied: Actually i have noticed jenna pressing buttons and picking things up with her right hand rather than her left. When i hold the container of baby cookies in front of her she always grabs with her right way before she even considers using her left...

coasterqueen replied: If I remember correctly it was age 2, but not for sure. I think Kylie is having a preference for her left hand, but can't really tell. Not sure if I *think* it's the left because she does more with her left or if it's because DH and I are both left-handed and it would be great if she was, too. rolling_smile.gif Only time will tell, though.

I never thought to look what foot Kylie usually starts off with, hmm, will have to pay attention to that one wink.gif

paradisemommy replied: Taven is the same way...he switches back and forth all the time, but ironically he seems to be more dominant with his left hand but what's really strange is both dh and i are right handed...things that make you go hmmmmmmmm rolling_smile.gif

supermom replied: Well, Anders is going to be left-handed I think, but he's almost 4 and has shown some preference for the left hand for some time with most things that he does. He writes right-handed (still) but eats and does everything else with the left hand mostly. I have seen him try to do with the right hand too, but he doesn't do as well if it's his right hand as he does with his left.

It's been that way for a while, and I can't remember what age, I just thought I would see a more pronounced use of one hand or the other by now......LOL!

ediep replied:
If you and Dh are left handed then its pretty likely that Kylie is too. Left handedness is a recessive gene.

ediep replied: I think that Jason may be left handed. He usually eats with his left hand. When he was new at eating table food, he had a harder time grasping food with his right. If I placed an item all the way to the right of his tray, he would still reach over with his left. Occasionally, he would pick something up with his right hand, then switch it to his left to eat it!

ediep replied:
yup, he can still be left handed.

coasterqueen replied:
LOL. My DH is left-handed and both his parents are right-handed. There is no one in their family that they know of who are left-handed. Weird, ey?

jcc64 replied: Older ds is a lefty. My buddy is an occupational therapist, and she said that handedness is not set until close to 4, especially if the child is predisposed to left handedness. They may express a preference earlier, and b/c our world is so dominated by righties, a right handed child has his preference continually reinforced, although most of us don't even realize we're doing this. Lefties take a little longer to accept their choice, very often switching back and forth for awhile. Pretty interesting, huh?

Shooter replied: Jeremy has shown a tendency towards being a lefty. I guess we'll see. My dad is a lefty.

aspenblue1 replied: I am left haded and both my partents are right handed. It looks like Isabella favors her right hand but she could be like me the only eat and write with my left hand. i have learned to do everthing else with my right hand.

Kaitlin'smom replied: right now its back and forth, somedays is all one side and other the oppsite, then yet other days its both! I do wonder what she will be,......
