Potty traing question - For moms of boys
Mom2Boyz wrote: Ok, this may sound kind of stupid, but did you potty train your son sitting down or standing up? It just seems to me that it would be easier to teach him sitting down, then let Daddy show him how to do it standing up after he gets the hang of the whole potty thing. What do you think?
TANNER'S MOM replied: We did alittle of both.. I think.
At first we sat down.. then we stood up when he got were he could aim and reach. BUT we have country kids.. and for me it was easier just to let them run around in underwear and pee outside..lol I know that is not good in town or infront of strangers.. but we are in the country so it was ok!
DansMom replied: Ha! I posted the exact same question about a year ago and got a good thread going. Daniel started out sitting down. But now that he's almost three, he's taking notice of what other boys are doing and sometimes wants to try doing it the other way. The problem is, at this age more goes down the leg than into the toilet, potty or bushes. I've seen some people who train by always having an empty margarine tub available for the boy to pee into (rather than peeing into something too high or too low or too far away---seems like one good way to do it). Good luck!
jcc64 replied: More country boys here. They got the biggest kick out of peeing off the deck (We have no neighbors) and it was certainly easier than mopping the bathroom floor every 5 minutes. I think they may have sat on the little potty a few times in the beginning, but it definitely was a short lived thing.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Sitting....
When he wants to stand - we'll let him. It's not that we don't want him to stand - it's just easier. The kids really only see DH on the toilet when he's int here for his 15 minutes... and it ain't to pee.... and well, I sit all the time... so... the kids have never really seen someone pee standing up....
....since my dad we only see once or twice a year, and DH's dad is such a spaz about kids and toilet habits.... he won't even change their diaper in the mornings to put underwear on them. He doesn't want to be *charged* with abuse.
zdk753 replied: Both of my boys I trained sitting down. It was just easier. Then when they got bigger & was able to reach the toilet better I had their dad show them what to do.
ions_momma replied: We started potty training Ion sitting down, but of course after he saw daddy standing, he thought he needed to also and actually, I think that made him want to use the potty more because he felt like a big boy like daddy!
mammag replied: We originally did sitting but then when they got big enough to stand up Daddy taught them......not very well aparently because they still miss the darn toilet sometimes. I caught Conner getting ready to go one morning and he was still half asleep and didn't even lift the lid, let alone the seat. Good luck.....it's an adventure. Another tip for you, teach him to step away from the toilet before putting the seat down. Cade didn't one time and slammed it down....things were very black and blue for awhile.....ouch!!!
CantWait replied: Definetly sitting. Robbie I don't think started peeing standing up till he was around 5. Anthony is 26 months and is sitting down also.
jenn3 replied: Ditto! Chris still sits down He knows how to stand he just likes sitting better....
Mom22boys replied: We did a little of both. I guess mainly we did standing up, because we used a pee-pee jar instead of the potty at first (much easier to get to him quickly).
gr33n3y3z replied: Sit down then the stand up thing
redchief replied: I know this question was for "moms of boys," but considering I was quite involved in the potty training of all of our kids, I thought I'd throw in my anyway. We sat ours for the first several months. It's easier for purposes of cleanup, focus and, well, for lack of a better phrase, training for #2.
Some experts say that it's GOOD for males to sit down to urinate now and then. Sitting down straight (not bent over reading such as many males tend to insist upon) places the bladder in a position to allow it to fully empty. It also releases pressure on the urethra. When standing, there is always a little bit of pressure on the urethra due to the leg muscles in the area being contracted.
