Post your 'natural' cleaning tips here
coasterqueen wrote: Mollie's post on shampoo got me thinking. I'm really interested in learning more 'natural' ways (is that the word I want to use, please let me know if not) to clean the house, wash the laundry, maintain my health, body, hair, etc....
So if you have any please post them here. I'd love to hear them and maybe incorporate a few into my home. TIA!
gr33n3y3z replied: I use White Vinegar to kill mold
kimberley replied: i use toothpaste to clean jewelry, a bowl of lemon and water to clean microwave, vinegar water for windows.. hmm i think that is all i can think of.
kit_kats_mom replied: white vinegar to remove hard water on fixtures & in the coffee maker
salt as an abrasive cleaner. Rub some on a lemon half & scrub your sink. shines like new
I use toothpaste to fill nail holes in the wall.
I'll have to think of more.
booey2 replied: Baby wipes to get the soap scum off of faucets in a pinch, and everything out of my carpet.
julesmom replied: I used 1/2 c. vinegar in a gallon of water to wash my kitchen floor. I was out of Mr. Clean and needed to wash it.
Vinegar worked better!
coasterqueen replied: hmmm, will it get bathtub crayon out of carpet? I've tried everything I can think of and it won't come out.
coasterqueen replied: We did this when we were in college. Always had to find the right color of toothpaste to match the color of the walls.
booey2 replied: I don't know but it may work, took ketchup, blood, wine and mashed potatoe out of my carpet. Did you try WD40?
MomToMany replied: Well, like I posted about the no-shampoo stuff, I also don't use laundry detergent, at least on my diapers. I use 5 drops of Tea Tree oil & 1/2 cup of baking soda in the hot wash, then a 1/2 cup (or less) of white vinegar in the rinse. White vinegar is a natural fabric softener.
Tea Tree oil is naturally antibacterial, antifungal: Tea Tree Oil Uses
And baking soda is a wonderful cleaning product as well: Whole House Uses
coasterqueen replied: Thanks everyone! Terri - I'll have to try that for getting the stain out of my carpet. Mollie - thanks for the links I will definitely look into them!
NummyMommy replied: I use vinegar and baking soda for a lot of cleaning....and I read an article about using vinegar and hydrogen peroxide (not sure if that qualifies as natural) in spray bottles as disinfectants (the article was about using them together to get rid of e coli in salad bars) so I always used them to clean the snake tank because bleach is so harmful to reptiles. I once made my own soap (found a recipe in a book my mom gave me called Back to Basics) when I was a teen but it didnt clean really well and was a huge hassle (boiling tallow in the family kitchen didnt make me very popular either ) That book had a lot of natural cleaning solutions but its in storage in another state I loved that book
TANNER'S MOM replied: Vinegar is a great glass cleaner also.. I mix half and half with water.
And wipe with old newspapers.. for no streaking or handprints.
We used to have the old stupid glass top tables.. I was cleaning them daily w/ little ones..and I discovered this tip and it cleaned better than Windex.
kit_kats_mom replied: Oh, I also use hydrogen peroxide to wipe down the kids hard toys once a week. It disinfects and won't poison them.
My2Beauties replied: I use toothpaste to clean my jewelry too, works better than any jewlery cleaner I have ever used. I use baby wipes for everything, cleaning the tabletops, cleaning grime and soap scum, cleaning off Hanna's toys, etc....
mckayleesmom replied: They are great for toilets too...especially the parts that guys always manage to pee on
beautifullychaotic replied:
It can what I do is heat up the crayon first. With an iron and paper bag I put the paper bag over where the crayon is heat it up with the iron then scrub it out with a wipey. I use wipeys for everything LOL
CantWait replied: I use boiled water on stubborn dirt in corners.
Toothpaste on black marks etc....
A bowl of your favourite baking spices, cinnamin, nutmeg etc.. with water, put in microwave until boiling, the steam losens all the dirt, and the microwave smells yummy, as well as the rest of your kitchen.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Well here's more of a beauty tip then a household cleaner...I take a bowl of sugar and mix with olive oil and scrub the mixture on my feet. Mini pedicure at home! You'll have very soft feet! Add lavendar oil for smell.
MyLuvBugs replied: It's so funny how life works. I came to this website for advice on teething (UGH), and came across your post.
