Poor Katherine is going to grow up very confused

My mom is an ex hippie who LOVES Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings stuff. I mean she loves it a lot, it's about all she can talk about and she knows everything there is to know about both books/movies etc.
MIL is a religious nutcase who would jump off of a bridge if her church told her that it was what God wanted her to do.
My mom was here for two weeks and during that time, K got to watch Harry potter, oh I dunno....30 times or so. MIL shows up this week and asks if K wants to watch a movie and she says "Harry Potter Please!" with this expectant little smile. MIL was HORRIFIED! She went on and on about how it is the devils movie and K shouldn't watch it.
Poor kid.
ediep replied: Devils movie???
awww, poor K!! Hope mIL is on her way home soon!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: MIL sounds like my grandmother (who is 92!!) That is all we heard after that movie came out "It is of the devil....never let Maddie watch that movie!!" Of course I had to irritate her and I told her Maddie was going trick or treating as Harry Potter! I'm such a brat!
kit_kats_mom replied: Apparently the magic and witchcraft is evil and ungodly. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who can make a planet and humans is pretty magical...whatever...she's nuts. LOL
MomToMany replied: Poor K!! I hope the MIL isn't staying too much longer.....
kimberley replied: oh no! poor K! how did she react when MIL said that? hopefully it just went in one ear and out the other. i don't agree with "devil" talk to kids. i am catholic, my kids go to catholic school... the devil is not part of our taught religion anymore!
A&A'smommy replied: LOLOL about the devils movie!!!
Poor K!!!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I agree. We don't talk about the devil to our children, either. I think it is rather old fashioned and is only a scare tactic.
Josie83 replied: Poor little Katherine! Talk about polar opposites! If Cassie ever spends any time with my mother she ends up confused like this. my mother doesn't like her doing ANYTHING - she doesn't like her watching ANY Tv, she will only read religious books to her (which I don't particluarly mind, i just don't like her telling Cassie what she hasbeen doing all along is wrong when its NOT if you know what I mean), she won't let her drink anything other than water, blah blah. So I can sympathise with you and Katherine, Cary! xx
MomToJade&Jordan replied: LOL!!!!! Your mother and I would get along. I have the Lord of the rings book, all three volumes in one, on my shelf, as well as all 5 of the Harry Potter books. Jade loves Harry Potter and has seen all of the movies at one time. Poor K. I hope your MIL is on her way home now.
amynicole21 replied: LOL! We just watched Harry Potter again last night - Sophia loves it
5littleladies replied: Poor K!! That would be confusing. I'm sure people think I'm a religious nutcase and I LOVE Lord of the Rings. And while I personally don't want my kids to watch Harry Potter yet, I plan to see them and when they get older I have no problem with them watching them. I think it's sad when people of faith are so afraid of things like this. It's fantasy for goodness sake.
loveydad replied: oh my goodness I hate when people do that. My kids have all three dvds, I seriously considered doing their room in Harry Potter, and they have all the books and I read them to them all the time. THey know they're not real. My Uncle Clint is a really really religious man, (he used to be a pastor) and he just loves LOTR and Harry Potter! His wife does too! As long as you know it's not real, and you don't like..try to become a witch, there's no problem here!
I've gotten into a big discussion about harry potter before, and really, those books made my kids LIKE to read, how can that be so evil!?
One of my kid's grandmother is like that. Oneo f the kids was talking to her about how he loved harry potter and LOTR and she got all seroius and says "you know that stuff isn't real, right?" I'm going... PLEASE! People get so stupid about stuff like that.
5littleladies replied: Exactly!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Nope, not a nutcase, just a Jesus Freak. What is so bad about that? What demonation are you?? I grew up Assembly of God. Can't get much more freakish than that.
I've personally never seen LOTR or Harry Potter. DH and I aren't into 'fantasy' type movies, but I'm certain that kids don't think of these movies as lessons or teaching tools. They are innocent about these things until we teach them otherwise. Just like the Halloween hype. Scotty tries to tell Maddie it is of the devil. I tell him "All Maddie knows of Halloween is that she gets to dress up and go door to door to collect candy." All these people that freak over Halloween are the ones teaching their children bad things. These kids aren't worshipping the devil by dressing up and trick or treating. It's innocent until you try to throw something in the mix. Anyway, another rant for another day.
5littleladies replied: I go to a non-denominational church, but my kids go to Missionettes over at the Assembly of God church across the street. We have essentially the same beliefs-I just happened to grow up in the church I go to.
I feel exactly the same way about halloween. In kids' eyes it's all innocent. I really think people over-think things sometimes.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I thought so. It seems as though we have the same beliefs and views on a lot of things. Of course I have swayed from a lot of things I was taught and my church was pretty traditional growing up, but I really miss my old church. Our youth camps were the best. They got really WILD! And I was a missionettes leader before we moved to Dallas.
I hope I wasn't offensive in any way. I certainly don't mean to be.
5littleladies replied: Are you talking to me?? I don't think I have ever been offended by anything you have said. Get that thought out of your head girl!
