Plop, Plop...Grow,Grow?
Crystalina wrote: I spend a dollar at the fair and walked away with a couple of goldfish. It has cost so much more then a dollar to buy the tank, add some friends and keep the little things happy. My question is...I bought some "live" plants that start out as bulbs you drop in the tank. After awhile they are supposed to root to the bottom and grow into lillies. Has anyone else had these and do they grow? One is getting slimy and the other is floating. It's been floating for 4 days and has never sunk to the bottom. I'm thinking the floating bulb is no good but what about the slimy one? I can't remember the name of them because I threw away the package.
mckayleesmom replied: Sorry...I don't know anything about fish tanks.....err...or fish for that matter. Hope you find out soon. Maybe its a difective bulb.
CantWait replied: I can't say I've ever heard of that.
cameragirl21 replied: I have lillies in my koi pond but I've never heard of them in an aquarium. The thing is that when you plant them in a pond you have to put them in a pot and some soil...you can't just drop them in. I don't really get that because obviously they don't grow in the wild in pots but these maybe hybrid lillies in which case they would need to be potted. I've never heard of dropping bulbs into water to make something grow...they've always had to be potted in some way, but then I've never heard of lillies in an aquarium either so this may be something different. I'd take them both out and see if you can see any sign of life in them, like a sproutling and if you do, mayb put them in a little pot with some lilly soil, you can get that at Home Depot. Take care.
Crystalina replied: These are specifically for aquariums. I got them in the fish section and it says all you do is drop them in the water and not to bury then in the aquarium gravel. They are supposed to root themselves. They are about the size of a peach pit. I just want to make sure they are not rotting in there and may kill my fair fish. I have too much money wrapped up in their tank for them to die now. I will check out the package the next time I go to the store. Maybe there is a website or something.
CantWait replied: haha trust me, you'll next to nothing to get another little fish if they crook.
luvmykids replied: Ah, the beloved fair fish... I had one once that actually lived for two years, longest lived goldfish I ever had
But to answer your question, I don't know anything about those lillies.
Crystalina replied: The kids really wanted to try to win them so we let them thinking that they would either lose or the fish would die within a few days. BTW, that game is alot easier then I remember. So we buy a little bowl but that got foggy within the first couple of days. I decided that if they live they needed a cleaner bigger house so we got them that. And some friends. I don't think they have any intention on dying and we had really no intention on having fish for more then a couple days. We are responsible pet owners so we are trying to make them nice and happy. I know what they are doing. They are waiting to see how much we will spend and then die. Then we have to buy more fish because we bought all this stuff.
We also bought fish that I didn't realize were nocternal so now I have to buy them a house to hide in during the day. Nocternal fish? Who'da thunk it?
MoonMama replied: Isn't that always the case though. I have never heard of those ether but if they ever work they sound neat. Let us know.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: the floating one is probably a dud but they will grow! It takes awhile but then you will see one little green sprout and then bam it will grow as tall as the tank We had a few of them in Tay's fish tank....unfortunately the plants wayyyy outlast the goldfish Well...I did have a hand in setting the fish free the big one ate part of the baby one and it was swimming sideways so anyway they swam to the ocean before she saw the carnage But the plants are very pretty once they get growing
Crystalina replied: Cool! Thanks so much. At least I know they weren't a waste of money.
How about bubbles? I just noticed that the tank is getting bubbles sitting on top of the water. Will that go away? That has never happend before. The pump is on and working. Hmmm.
Can you tell I've never had fish? Izabella had a beautiful tank with water and the bubbles and lights but all the fish inside were fake. They moved like they were real but they were plastic. Very low maintenence.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: Ours had bubbles too-I just told myself it was extra oxygen from the plants try pushing the filter stone on the pump a little deeper into the tube so it sits right on the bottom of the tank....and let me know if that made any sense what-so-ever It helped a little in our tank.
