But a big concern of mine is how many will abuse it bc of not using protection and that is scary

PrairieMom replied: I don't really know what to think. This pill prevents conception, NOT inplantation, that makes a difference to me. It seems like it should be a OTC type thing IMO. I do understand that it needs to be taken with in 24 hours tho, and who gets in to see the DR in that time?

amynicole21 replied: No, Plan B can be taken within the first 3 days after intercourse, and it is bascally just super doses of the same stuff that is in bc pills. It makes it so a fertilized egg can't implant in the walls of the womb.

I know there is also another pill on the market, thru the dr only, whats the difference between the two pills....
and I am always concerned about new meds, it seems to take yrs to find out that there are bad side effects

PrairieMom replied: The guy they interviewed on CBS said that Plan B prevents conception the same way the regulay BCP does, becuase it is a really high does of the same stuff that is in a regualr BCP. There is another pill out there, I don't remember what is it called that prevents inplantation. He was very specific about it. Personally, I didn't realize there were two different kinds.

I scanned it, but didn't see where it mentions HOW the pill works. I'll search again when I'm not supposed to be making dinner.

sorry I was just wondering what these pills do.

I for one feel, that so many people want to have babies, and its such a blessing to be able to, that if people do not want to get preg. then they should really take the steps (there are so many now) to make sure preg. doesnt happen.

thing is, you can't totally prevent it unless you absolutely abstain. I was on BC and used condoms and here I am, 19 weeks pregnant. I feel very naive to think that I was soooo careful and there was no chance of it happening... because it did the ONLY way to prevent is to abstain, and try telling a bunch of drunken randy college students that!!!

If it is going OTC I would worry about it being abused... I mean jeeze at my college they handed the morning after pill out like candy, all you have to do was go in and see the doctor and tell them you had unprotected sex and they'd talk to you then give it to you... I had a roommate who basically used it like regular BC and it made me sick! And frequent use like that can't be good for your body, you're basically causing an early abortion or chemical pregnancy

Soiunds a bit sill to some, but in all reality, it happens with a lot of medications , why not this one tha twoudl be VERY appealing to someone tha twants it/needs it and cannot buy it without a Dr's perscription but doesn't want anyone to know of their need for it?

Plan B® works like a regular birth control pill. It prevents pregnancy mainly by stopping the release of an egg from the ovary, and may also prevent the fertilization of an egg (the uniting of sperm with the egg). It is important to know that Plan B® will not affect a fertilized egg already attached to the uterus; it will not affect an existing pregnancy.

Plan B® is approved by the FDA and contains the hormone levonorgestrel, the same hormone in the birth control pills that healthcare professionals have been prescribing for more than 35 years. The difference is that Plan B® contains a larger dose of levonorgestrel than the amount found in a single birth control pill.

Remember that Plan B® is not RU-486 (the abortion pill). Because Plan B® is used to prevent an unplanned pregnancy, it will not work if you’re already pregnant. If you take Plan B® and are already pregnant, it will not affect your existing pregnancy.
