jcc64 replied: I don't know much about peanut allergies except to say that I never, ever heard of people having peanut allergies until a few yrs ago, and now all of a sudden, it's like an epidemic, to the point that my kid thinks she's going to get expelled if she brings a pb & j sandwich for lunch.

ITA .
It does seem odd that allergies seem to have really become more prevalent. And they are really really scary! I think some of the problem could be stemming from all the processed foods that we consume. There is corn , soy or peanut oil in everything. we are consuming so much more of it then we ever had in the past.

coasterqueen replied:
Agreed, agreed. It's very strange for sure! I'm not sure what the answer is.

I ate a lot of peanuts when I was preg. with all three of my children. Only one of them has food allergies.

I have always wondered if it has something to do with children who are born before they are ready to be born? For example, Jakob was taken early, at 38 weeks, which is not a big deal I suppose but they always say every day counts, and so many things are still developing right up to the end of the gestation..so I always wondered, if he just didnt finish developing what he needed to be able to tolerate foods.

Interesting read.

I have always wondered and think of that all the time with Megan being born at 36 weeks and all the problems she's had. I could say the same thing about chocolate - I ate a ton of it with both girls, but only Megan has the allergy to it happy.gif I just look at Kylie who was born on time and healthy as an ox and Megan, who is very very healthy, but has all kinds of "issues" with weight, food allergies, sensory issues, etc. Would she have had them if she was born on time? A question I always ask and when I hear people so anxious for the babies to be born earlier and docs who go along with it.......well I never wanted to have her that early and wish I hadn't for her sake. THankfully she was VERY big for her age and didn't have to stay in NICU, but she's had enough issues, my poor girl. I will never understand mothers desire to go early. growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif IMO EVERY day counts!!!!!!!!!!!!!

luvbug00 replied: ITA with Tara, we eat a bunch of junk in our food. I didnt believe it until recently. However I didnt eat many peanuts at all. I just ate lemons and pickles..mya's still allergic.
I also agree it's one more things for moms to be paranoid and beat themselves up about.

jcc64 replied: I think you're probably right about the processed foods thing. I just can't wrap my head around the corn and soy in everything we eat phenomenon. There are some great documentaries out there about the connection between gov't subsidies of farmers and why so much of these products makes it into the food supply. Wish I could think of the names right now.

coasterqueen replied:
Corn Inc or King Corn? There are more, can't remember them, but we've watched them. It's unreal. Has anyone seen the documentary on Chicken? UGH! We can barely stomach chicken now because of watching that thing. happy.gif

I never knew just how much yellow dye and cottonseed oil was in our foods until Megan's food allergies. It's UNREAL. You can't eat ANYTHING except meat and veggies/fruit - almost.

I really think if we go back to growing food and eating food the way it "used to be" there would be a LOT less problems in this world. The government has taken over way too much when it comes to our food -- while large corporations are putting this crap in food the government is there to regulate it and they don't. I don't even think "big government" would make a difference in this situation.

I mean, seriously, how does a kid get a yellow dye/cottonseed oil allergy unless it's because of the food crap we eat -- that's all MAN MADE crap my child is allergic to, which I guess I must have eaten a lot of it when I was pg with her. blush.gif n I dunno. Guess the same goes for peanuts, but it's not really man-made, but I guess all the crap they put in with it can make the difference for some.

PrairieMom replied:
food INC, king corn, future of food.

Don't watch any of them unless you are prepared to either starve to death or make major life changes.

luvbug00 replied: FOOD INC was my wake up call. for sure! we eat so much better now.

boyohboyohboy replied:
I am the same way Karen! Caleb was born at 34 weeks, and while strong enough to have never needed NICU, he had asthma and breathing issues for the first three yrs of his life. If he had stayed inside till 40 weeks, I just dont think the out come would have been the same. He also has trouble with learning and social skills.

Jakob was born early and has all his health issues.. also the SID and allergies.

Andrew born right on time, is just as healthy as they come. No allergies, no asthma, nothing..rarely sick.

I always encourage moms when its coming down to the wire and they are exhausted and the end of the preg. gets so hard..to hang in there..those last few weeks seem to make a world of difference.
