Peanut Butter

victoire2002 wrote: How many of you have given your kiddos under 2 yrs peanut butter? I let Aidan try some yesterday (he's 18 months), but my ped has recommended we wait until 2 yrs to add this to his diet. Was wondering what your ped's had recommended, and what you were doing about this!

BTW, no food allergies in our family....

aspenblue1 replied: My ped said to wait until 18 months so I haven't given her any but others have.

Kaitlin'smom replied: Well since there are no allergies I let Kaitlin try it, but she did not like it. So I will wait another 6 months or so and try it again.

kit_kats_mom replied: If it wasn't for K's daily snack of peanut butter from a spoon (about 2T's a day) she's probably still weigh 16 lbs. She loves that stuff and has had no problems with it.

maliksmommy replied: I gave Malik some peanut butter when he turned 1 and I know he has peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch at his daycare. We haven't had any problems with it and don't have any allergies in our family.

jem0622 replied: My dad always joked and called PB&J's 'choke' sandwiches...because if you put too much peanut butter then you could choke just trying to down the thing.

I suspect that the doctor is more concerned about things like that (getting too much in the mouth for some reason and not being able to handle it) than a food allergy per se.

BTW...it can affect stools b/c it is so thick/binding.

kit_kats_mom replied:
Yeah, K's diapers always smell "special" after her peanut butter. bawling.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied:
LOL rolling_smile.gif sorry but that was funny gross but funny!

Jamison'smama replied: We haven't tried it---I am still a little nervous. Jamison used to break out in a rash when I ate peanuts during her first few months. Doesn't seem to phase her now though. I will wait until 2 I think --just in case.

coasterqueen replied: I have given Kylie peanut butter. I actually would have waited til 2 years because of peds recommendations, but I was sleep-deprived one day and gave her a bit of my pbj and forgot about that I wasn't supposed to do that. And well that's how the story goes rolling_smile.gif I'm stickin to it wink.gif

It's true that if you put too much peanut butter on there it CAN choke them, but from my understanding the reason why peds are asking people to wait until 2 is because the number of peanut allergies are increasing TREMENDOUSLY and no real explanations. It's happening in those families that do not have food allergies, too.

kimberley replied: the lady i babysat for gave her kids peanut butter just over 1yo. she always gave it to them thinly spread on toast cuz when the bread is warm it thins out the PB a little. with my boys i didn't give it to them until much older because we do have allergies in the family and they didn't like it anyway.

5littleladies replied: My girls have all had peanut butter starting at the age of one and we've had no problems. We don't have any allergies in our family either.

DansMom replied: I read in the paper that they've upped the recommended introduction age to 3! That seems a bit extreme. But because Daniel's milk allergy is so severe (anaphylactic), I will definitely wait until he has outgrown that one before I introduce peanut butter. If he didn't have that allergy, though, I'm sure I would have tried it by now (he's 14 months).

MommyToAshley replied: My ped gave the ok after a year old. I think they suggest waiting longer if there is a history of allergies in your family.

Ashey LOVES PB&J for lunch. I use the "Simply Fruit" instead of jelly because it is 100% fruit with no sugar added. yummy.gif I love PB&J too! yummy.gif

paradisemommy replied: no allergies in our family and i gave it to him just after 1 but he doesn't like it unless it's covered with chocolate..lol

~CrazieMama~ replied: Brianna gets peanut butter sometimes....but very little. No allergies in my family of it. She is 22 months.

Daddy of Schnoogly replied: Since we have no FOOD allergies in the family, we decided to try it at a year. Iain loves it, and we've had no problems.

I recommend smooth over crunchy, though.

A&A'smommy replied: i didnt know you were suppose to do this and my sil never said anything but i was giving my 16months old neice Pb&j sandwhiches when i babysat her, its the only thing i could get her to eat!

3_call_me_mama replied: Our ped told us to wait until Cameron was 1 becasue we had no history of any allergies and he was breastfed and I ate peanut butter my entire pregnancy and while nursing. He said that if he was going to have some sort of reaction to it it would most likely have happened by then. WE tried it about 13 months and he did fine, he loves peanut butter on apples and in crackers but not a big fan of PB&J:)

amynicole21 replied: We've given her a little bit, but have tried to stay away from it for the most part. She's sneaky, though... we let her feed the dog his pill (hidden in pb on a spoon) and she tends to *share* with him puke.gif She lets the dog lick the spoon, then takes a lick herself. rolleyes.gif Ick.
