Pain relief or no?

~CrazieMama~ wrote: I used Demoral with both kids. biggrin.gif

MommyToAshley replied: Anyone that is PG now, don't read this.

I wanted to go natural, but I was such a wimp. I think it was because Ashley was so big. I was at 6cm and I asked the nurse how much longer she thought it would be and she said it could be 4 more hours. ohmy.gif So, I elected for the epidural. They came right away to give me the epidural and Ashley was born 20 minutes later. LOL rolling_smile.gif But, I am glad that I had the epidural, I had a 4th degree tear and I didn't feel a thing. biggrin.gif

ediep replied: I had an epidural

coasterqueen replied: I had an epidural. I had severe back labor and asked for it. I pretty much was a chicken before going to the hospital and knew I would have it. biggrin.gif

momma2jenna replied: had plans to use the 'bradley' method, in moderation....would have i.v. ect. if necessary. but had to have an emergency c-section- so I had an epidural.

MomofTay&Sam replied: If your preggo skip mine too.. I had a spinal epidural during the c-section and NO meds after. Nothing but good old advil. No morphine of anytype, I am deathly allegric to pain meds. It was a nightmare and still very fresh in my mind after 10 months. sad.gif

paradisemommy replied: i had an epidural..after about 12 hours of really intense labor but my cervix not dilated at all - i was dying. but funny because even after all that pain..i would do it again in a heartbeat!! wub.gif

A&A'smommy replied: im going in asking for a epidural im a big baby when it comes to pain!!!!

Mommieto2Girls replied: I had a epidural, then when the emergency c-section can I was given a spinal. Afterward I had a moraphin and demarol(supposed to help with shaking due to epidurol). Next time will be a spinal, noe epidural cause it hardly worked at all and I am not taking any chances for the pain....

riversmom replied: I had an epi that I got almost immediately. I was induced and had my water broken pretty much all at the same time. I also had back labor so it was really my best friend!

dolfinrse replied: I had an epidural.

MomToMany replied: You guys can't scare me that easily! I've been through it 4 times already, and 1 more to look forward to huh.gif .

I had an epideral with #1 and #3. I had episiotomies with #1 and #2. I had no pain relief with #2, except the local for the episiotomy. I had nothing whatsoever with #4, no episiotomy or anything, and it really wasn't that bad. I had asked for something at about 6cm, but the stupid nurse had to get an IV started and all that, so the Dr. checked me before she gave it to me and said I was at 10. Must've only taken me about 15-20 minutes to get that far. I was actually begging the Dr. to give me something, but he kept saying it's time to push! She was born about 5 minutes later!

supermom replied:
LOL - yep, how soon we forget!

I had an epidural with number 4 and 5 - and I had a block with number 2 and 3 - I labored for 12 hours with #1 with no meds, didn't progress and had an emergency c-section with general anesthesia. I had an emergency c-section with #4 too, but since I already had the epi, I didn't have to do anything. Doc for #4 and 5 is a true "women's friend" when it comes to pain relief. I also had some demerol with number 5 but that was to relax me more than for the pain (see my labor story!).

IF I was to do it again, I'd plan on having another epi, it is the only way to labor!

amynicole21 replied: I tried Nubain first... did nothing whatsoever. Then went for the epidural which was much nicer once they actually got the levels right thumb.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I picked other...even if I had demerol, and here's why:

I asked for Demerol. The stupid nurse I had kept telling me I'd be there all day.....and then she checked me, and I was almost ready to push...so she got really quiet then said she was going to call the doc to authorize the shot of Demerol.

By the time I actually GOT the Demerol... I was just about to start pushing.... So I got the shot, started pushing, delivered Zach in like 3 pushes...then the doctore started on my 3 single stiches. I felt the first stich just fine, the second one I only felt a little bit...and the 3rd one, I didn't feel at all.

So I got a shot of Demerol...but it didn't kick in until AFTER I had already delivered.

So I just say the birth was natural..I had anaethetics for my stiches... heh heh

booey2 replied: Other - we started Matthew's birth by going in and wanted it natural. That wasn't going to happen (if you read the birth story you will know why). Had Nubain first and when it stopped working and they ran out of places to give me the needle I went for the epi. With Thomas I had to almost practically beg my nurse for my epi. Thank goodness my doc was in earshot when I asked the third time (again more details in the birth story). If we do it again and that is a big IF I would like to try it without the epi as long as I could using breathing techniques cause with Thomas I was almost at the end of dilating by the time I got it.

Kaitlin'smom replied: had the epi, I did not want it but with the horrible back labor I got one glad I did cause I ended up with an emergency c-section, if i had not gotten it I would have had to be nocked out for the birth.

DansMom replied:
I managed to do it natural with no meds, by the skin of my teeth. I joked afterward that everyone on my floor who had an epidural was probably cursing me, because I yelled my way through the pain, and I'm sure they could hear me. It was far worse than anything I was prepared for, and for several weeks after I felt like I had been in a car accident (all my muscles had been clenched so hard they hurt for weeks). Also I was lucky that Daniel was well-positioned, so labor progressed normally and I didn't stall. Any hitch in the progress and I would have asked for meds! I labored for about 20 hours and pushed for almost 3. They actually gave me a small dose of morphine when they went to sew me up---I thought that was so odd, since I had made it through the delivery without medication. But at that point I was wiped out.

mckayleesmom replied: I had the epi block,,,but it didn't work, so I already knew ahead of time that I would have to be knocked completely out if the block didn't work. Well it didn't and they told me they were going to put me out. The last thing I remember saying is, " did anyone tell my husband that Im being put out yet"? The next thing I know, I have a baby. After that they had an IV in my arm with Im not sure what in it (I was out of it, they told me what it is,,just don't remember) I never had to use it..I didn't have anything at all till the 3rd day when I got up without the bandages..Then I asked for pain medication and they gave me IB profen and Perkaset (sp?).

~CrazieMama~ replied: Wow, I think anyone who had the demerol, nubain, stadol, mind as well say they had a natural delivery because the shots do absolutely nothing for the pain. I felt everything from start to finish. I screamed in agony with my son during 22 hours of labor. I was so drugged and still screamed. How awful!!! I am afraid of needles in places that I can not see, so I would not be able to have the epi. But my labor with my daughter was a real blessing. Alot of credit goes out to all the ladies here who have delivered babies in all ways. I think we are the most incredible people in the world. Hugs to all the mommies out there who had to endure such pain to bring a life in the world!!! grouphug.gif

CantWait replied: I had Demerol with #1 half an hour before I started pushing which basically didn't help with the pain much, but sure made me whoozy, baby was fine. I had Moraphine with #2 which didn't help at all, also had gas, didn't help at all, just as I was about to get an iv started for an epidual, I felt the urge to push. I guess in a way it was pretty natural. Both made me very naseous though and I had to throw up puke.gif

aspenblue1 replied: I had an epi but. It took them 3 times to get it in right then it didn't really help. I could still feel pretty much everything. Also had to go back to the hospital 4 days later and have another epirdural block put in because I was leaking spinal fluid and couldn't get up with out awful headaches.

MomToJade&Jordan replied: I had an edidural, but before they could give that to me I was given Stadol. The first time I asked dor the epidural I wasn't dilated enough. The second time the guy was in a C-Section.

Maddie&EthansMom replied:

Yep! With Maddie I was induced. They started the pitocin drip....15 mins later the doc came in and broke my water and ordered the epi right away. I got the epidural immediately and was in labor all day. (But had no pain) rolling_smile.gif

I wonder if labor will go by faster if I hold off on the epi until about 4 cm. Does anyone know if it matters?? Good question for doc I guess. smile.gif

mama3x replied: DS - epidural, DD - spinal for the c-sect, this time ?
