Pacifiers.... - did I wean my other kids to late??

six_kids_at_28 wrote: Hey. Just wondering, if you did use pacifiers, what age you weaned your kids off of them. I'm wondering now if I waited to long with my others. James and Ashley were weaned off at around 2 1/2 and Star around 3.. unsure.gif
I just read that you should get them off around 1-1/2?? huh.gif
Well, the triplets are 21 months..almost 2..should I wait until 2 1/2 or 2 or should I just try to take them away now? They dont use them alot during the day anymore, they like them though in the car and in their stroller. We have special hooks on their seats in the car and stroller so that thye dont lose them there laugh.gif I'm not sure..I dont think that it would be THAT hard to wean them off of..but just wondering for all of you great moms oppinons smile.gif

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Logan has never been a huge paci kid. He eventually stopped sucking on them after he was about 7 months old. Now he likes to chew them when teething. Sorry I can't help more.

CantWait replied: Robbie was weaned off his at 18 months, and Anthony never really did take one. It's totally up too you, but for me I just can't stand happy kids trying to talk with a sucky in their mouth. JMHO.

six_kids_at_28 replied: All right thanks smile.gif Anyone else?

My3LilMonkeys replied: We started to wean Brooke as soon as she tried to talk at 9 months - but I think that is very early. She was completely off of it by the time she was 10 months.

Madison weaned herself at 2 weeks. She realized that there was no food in it and lost interest! rolling_smile.gif

mckayleesmom replied: Well...both of my kids refused the paci, but I do think that once they start to talk or say a few words..its time for it to go. That is just my opinion. The other day a lady approached me in the store and told me that my daughter talked really well for her age and she asked what I did to help her...Nothing, but I noticed her son was a couple months younger then Mckaylee and still had a paci in his mouth. I kindly told her that maybe the paci was holding him back a little. Also, I notice alot of older kids that have paci's (not all, but alot) parents and siblings talk for them. I also know that its easier said then done to get rid of it..so its up to you. My neice had one till she was over 3 years old and it was terrible trying to get her to get rid of them.

moped replied: Jack never knew what to do with one - he had it at bedtime until he was about 6 months and then he threw it across the room so I got rid of all of them..........but he never really could crasp the concept

my2monkeyboys replied: My son was weaned at just over a year. I took the bottle away at a little over 10 months, so I let him keep his paci for a couple more months. He only took it at nap and bed time, and one day I just told him they were all gone. He didn't fuss too much, so it worked out great. My nephew had one until he was almost 3. His doctor said not to worry, that he wouldn't walk down the aisle with it in his mouth, so my sister just let him keep it until he lost interest since he was talking great. I think it's just a personal choice. I don't think it will kill them to have it or not, so do what you feel comfortable with.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

six_kids_at_28 replied: Ok thanks everyone smile.gif I think that when they are around 2- 2 1/2 I will take it away....probably closer to 2 but I think that Patrick will want to hang on to it the longest wink.gif Thanks for you guy's opinons! And WOW biggrin.gif All your kids didnt really like pacifiers...mine are like baby.gif baby.gif baby.gif baby.gif lol blush.gif

Our Lil' Family replied: Thomas never really took one, he's a thumb sucker...thankfully only when he's tired or hungry though, can't really take that away from him!

ions_momma replied: Ion only used a pacifier every once in a while and by the time he was 10 months, he didnt use it at all.

ilovemybaby replied: Abby loves her paci but she doesn't cry if I take it off her. She only uses it if she is teething or sick really... Sometimes I give it to her when she goes to bed if she is unsettled.
She used to have it all the time... all day and all night... When she was about four months old I think, she stopped wanting it so much.
She could put it in her mouth and take it out at two weeks old! How clever is that?! LOL

Maddy'sMom replied: My Madison is now 14 months, and we are weaning her from her pacifier, which she ONLY uses at bedtimes. She leaves it in her crib- has never used it in the stores, out anywhere...she just never cared to use it that way. She has used it in the car on trips, but that's it aside from bedtime. Also, she doesn't actually keep it all night long- she throws it out of the crib sometime after going to sleep.

So I guess we aren't too worried, and obviosuly she is till fairl young when it comes to pacifiers. BUT, we figure the earlier the better, since it just seems to be much harder later on when they KNOW what you're doing. We have been taking it at naptime, but let her have it at bedtime. Once she's fine without it at naps, we will move on to bedtime.

We got rid of bottles at 12.5 months, so we feel good about that...paci will come in time I think!
