PLEASE read if you know anything about - Urinary tract infection
momof2girls wrote: Ok guys Im a bit of a mess, my daughter that is 9 has been saying it hurts when she pee's for the last 2 days, and she was really red.. I took her to the Dr today and the Dr said her urine test was very strange and wants to send it out for a test, she put her on antibiotics and told me to use monostat on her to help with the burning... she said that she thinks we should see a urologist to make sure nothing major is wrong. I told her that I get them sometimes and she said its really not something a child should get....
I know most of the mommy's and daddy's here have younger ones but if anyone has had this with their child let me know if your Dr gave you the same advice or what the outcome was, Im really upset and wondering what could be wrong, she is in alot of pain.
Thanking you in advance for any info....
It seems its always something with my family!

kit_kats_mom replied: Oh, I'm so sorry. Those things hurt! I used to get them all the time and my Dr. told me that some people are just more succeptable to them. He reccomended I stop taking bubble baths because that can cause irritation and contribute to the UTI's. I've not taken a bubble bath since and I've also not had another UTI.
Another thing that won't pertain to her right now but may in the future, make sure to pee after sex. It rises any germies out that may have gotten pushed up there.
As for the test, hopefully it's nothing. It may have travelled to her kidneys though and maybe that's the reason for the extra tests.
momof2girls replied: Thanks She said women that are active can get them due to have sex, but for a child its not normal... so of course her saying that just scares me to death!
And with bubble baths, I never give them to the girls, and also have been told to only use WHITE toilet paper because the dye in the fancy tp can cause irritation as well...
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I'm so sorry. Please try not to worry. I bet the test will come out fine. Sometimes Doctors can be a little bit inconsiderate when offering a diagnosis and they don't mean to scare us. Hang in there and let us know the results.
kit_kats_mom replied: Ah, stupid nurse. Don't let her freak you out. I dont' think kids get them as often as adults but they do get them. Shoot, they even tested K for a UTI back when she was really little, like 6 mos old.
Does she always wipe front to back? I know that that can be a contributing factor as well.
MomofJandB replied: Last spring break, my DD, who was 7 at the time, started throwing up for no reason. She would puke, then be not feeling well for about an hour then be perfectly fine! This went on for about 5 days before I took her in because I kept thinking it was a flu and she was getting better. They were going to run some blood tests on her, but did a urine test, which came back extremely positive, so the blood tests were unnecessary. It took 2 different doses of 2 different antibiotics to get rid of it. They also told me if she gets another one before the age of 13, they will need to do further tests which include shooting dye into her to see if everything is working correctly. The odd thing is she never complained that it hurt when she peed. She had, and still has somewhat, a terrible habit of holding it until the last minute. Sometimes a little may come out in her underwear and she doesn't change right away. Both of these are what I think led to her infection. They wanted to run the test on her that time and I said no, let's let the antibiotics do their job. If it happens again, I'll let them do the test. I had urinary tract issues when I was little. I had a kink in my ureter (I think) and needed it surgically fixed. When I told the doctor this, they wanted her tested, but I'm still waiting. Hopefully the antibiotics will work on your daughter and that will be the end of it! Good luck.
mummy2girls replied: My niece who is now 6 years old use to get them alot when she was younger. She couldnt have bubble baths because of that. She is so suseptible(sp?) to getting them. She even got it so bad she was bledding a bvit. So kids can get them...
mom21kid2dogs replied: I had 10 in one year so I guess I know a little about them. The doc might be concerned because they can be an early indication of diabetes or other medical issues so they'll likely want to rule that out.
Mine were solved by drinking twice as much water as the daily recommendation and giving up all sugared drinks. She might try pushing alot of water to help flush them out and make sure she knows NEVER to hold her urine. Holding it is a frequent cause of UTI's in children!
texasp3 replied: Oh for pity's sake... what does "very strange" mean? I hate it when medical professionals make comments like that? Why do they do that? Do they WANT you to be upset? Develop high blood pressure?
The adults in our family see a GP up the road whenever we just need to get in quickly for something. He had years as an ER doc and with him it's ALWAYS the worse case scenario. I've learned to just ignore him when he starts going through his litany of possible disasters that are lurking around the corner. That's just the way his brain works. He's always arrived at a good conclusion and treated us well in the end.
I don't have any girls, and only one UTI in my own experience, but I can say that it's a good thing you're on this right away. I'm sure you know the biggest problem with UTIs is having them progress to kidney infections. I'm actually more prone to kidney infections than UTIs... go figure. I'm sure you know the drill... if the pain she is in is in her back or side.. get her back to the doc ASAP. I know from my one experience that even "just" a UTI can hurt like HECK! If a grown woman wants to curl up and cry, I'm sure a little girl is miserable.
As irked as I would be if my doctor made that "very strange" comment, it sounds to me like a good thing they're sending it out for more testing. I poked around on the internet and there's lots of information about UTIs in younger girls... and it's not refered to as "rare" - just less common than in adult women and of more concern should they be recurring or difficult to get rid of.
momof2girls replied: THANK YOU ALL Man do I feel a bit beter now. I agree that medical professional are sometimes dumb about the way they state things. Im a certified medical assistant, So I have quite a bit of knowledge of medical terms, although I have not worked for a dr in years. (they dont pay enough)
She does wipe from front to back....
She does hold it, eventhough I tell her not too, maybe now she will listen to me, hard lesson to learn.
Thanks to everyone for the info, I think I can rest a bit now!!!
You are all wonderful!
loveydad replied: well, I just had one that they said was unusual. Not that its not unusual for a man to get one at all. but, he said I got it trhough my mouth it was some weird thing. It got better, than it came back, went into my kidneys, and now tommrow I have to go get xrays to make sure everything is normal. I had to go to urologist too.
my 2 year old gets them too.
momof2girls replied: I think I will take her to a urologist just to make sure all is ok, I think it will be she is already feeling better since she has taken meds today!
Kirstenmumof3 replied: Ever since I was pregnant with Claudia I am prone to them. They are not pleasant at all. I hope your daughter feels better soon! I was always told to drink a lot of cranberry juice and this really seemed to help. I was put on antibiotics and painkillers. But it sounds like your daughter could have a combination of both a UTI and a yeast infection. I really hope it's nothing serious!
jolene555 replied: Am I the only one to go the cranberry juice route?? The second I feel remotely like I've got a UTI I buy gallons of cranberry juice (which I detest) and drink like there's no tomorrow. UTI will be gone in 2 days tops. I love it!!
My niece had a UTI at 9 months old, and a yeast infection at 12 months, and hasn't had either since. Sometimes it just happens, I guess.
momof2girls replied: I agree with the cranberry juice I do the same for me, if I feel Im getting one. I had her drinking tons of cranberry juice and water it was not helping... so hopefully the antibiotics will clear it all up!
loveydad replied: sometimes i drink that. I've had like 4 of them in the last YEAR insane for a man, so there's something wrong with me.
