Dr. Alan Greene on Preventing Ear Infections By Alan Greene, MD, FAAP
What can I give him to prevent an ear infection from getting started? Question My son is 3 and just came down with a cold. He is prone to ear infections. Is there anything I can give him that might prevent an ear infection from getting started?
Answer The natural nonsugar sweetener Xylitol is one of the most effective ways to prevent ear infections. It is available over the counter and over the Internet in sugarless gums and mints and as a powder.
Also, getting lots of fluids can help to thin the mucus. For some children, a decongestant might also help, either orally or as nose drops. I can still remember my parents giving me Neosynephrine nose drops when I had a bad stuffy nose. It remains a good choice! http://www.americanbaby.com/ab/story.jhtml.../data/17768.xml
Kirstenmumof3 replied: I can really sympathise with that! Claudia has an ear infection every month. We give her Motrin, it works really fast to relieve the pain and lasts longer. Also try giving him a bath with the Johnson & Johnson Vapour bath, that will help him to relax. Poor baby! I hope he feels better soon!
Kaitlin'smom replied: awww poor thing.
My Grand Mother in Law was just telling me the other day that she heard or read (I am not sure) that the meds they give kids/toddlers for ear infections does not really helping fact can hurt by building an immume to them. That they should be putting in sweet oil in the ear and that will clear it right up. Now weither this is true or not I don't know. Thankfully Kaitlin has never had and ear infection. Just thought I would share an 75 year old womans opinion.
I hope he gets better soon!
kit_kats_mom replied: Actually the women in my family were all telling me the same thing on mothers day. There must have been a report on one of the news shows about it or something. I think it was something along the lines of antibiotics don't really help ear infections and that they can cause more harm if given due to the increased risk of resistant strains of infections in the future.
Kaitlin'smom replied: well I am glad I was not the only one giving this 'advice' on motheres day
must have been on tv then.....
kimberley replied: poor baby!!! i hope he is better soon!
amynicole21 replied: Poor JR! I know just how you feel, though. Sophia is on her 100th or so round of antibiotics for chronic ear infections right now. The doctors keep assuring me this will all come to an end eventually... I sure hope so.
DansMom replied: Poor JR!!! I hope he feels better soon!
KatieLeigh79 replied: Well we are 4 days into the antibiotics and he still isn't eating more then half a lvl 2 jar of food a day and a sip of water or milk (if im lucky) the Dr. (who is a pretty well known Ped.) tells me not to worry but umm, after 4 days of this shouldn't he be worried to????
Mom2Boyz replied: Poor thing That's got to be rough. I would be concerned too about the amount he's eating, that sure doesn't seem like very much. I hope he starts feeling better soon.
KatieLeigh79 replied: He still isn't eating good at all - and the meds are almost gone, everyone tells me not to worry but on avg what does a child just shy of a year (will be on the 23rd) eat in a day? I mean I hear that some babys go through 2-3 jars of lvl 3 foods at least in a day at his age and I can't even get 1 in him and no milk and maybe a sip of water in a day? Are these people here all just crazy and giving me really bad advice when I have a right to be worried?
kimberley replied: is he on formula or BM still? that is enough to sustain a child for the first year. i know my kids only want to nurse when they are sick. James ate like a bird til he was almost 18months and still isn't a very big eater. try smaller meals more often during the day. it really isn't something to worry about except for dehydration. just make sure he is getting plenty of fluids. it is normal for you to worry.. you are his mommy lol. just try not to make yourself crazy over it. hope things get better soon.
amynicole21 replied: I agree with Kimberly... the thing I would be worried about would be the liquid intake, not the food. Have you tried giving him a pedialyte popsicle? Could he also be teething? Sometimes Sophia wouldn't want to eat when her teeth were bothering her. Try some motrin and see if he eats then. Remember, at about a year they stop the major growth spurts, so they do slow down in the eating department.
Does your ped schedule follow up appts for ear infections? I have to take Sophia in 10 days after her initial appt to make sure that the infection is gone. Maybe you can request one of those and also a weight check just to be sure?
I hope he's back on track soon. I know how difficult it is on Mommies when their little one's are under the weather
KatieLeigh79 replied: He wont BF, take a bottle, do formula or anything but Vit D milk anymore so really all he's getting is a spoonful of water/milk or whatever I can get in him and a little from the half a lvl 2 jar of food I can get in him... Called the Ped back and he still doesn't care just said he's being stubborn, not sure what to make of this - I really dont want him to dehydrate :(
