Our teachers going on strike - anyone else ever dealt with this before

jcc64 wrote: The teachers in my students' school district are poised to go on strike tomorrow morning over stalled contract negotiations. Has anyone else's kids been in this situation before?

mom21kid2dogs replied: When I moved here 26 years ago the teachers went on strike. It was the only time it's ever happened in this district. To this day, I still hear people who have hard feelings about it among the school employees. Good luck! thumb.gif

skinkybaby replied: When I was in jr high the teachers in our district went on strike for two weeks. To make up the days we missed they tried making everyone go to school on Saturdays. That did not go over well with the parents and students!

My3LilMonkeys replied: There are strikes in our area almost every year but luckily not in our school. I hope for everyone's sake its a short one!

bluebear replied: I heard about that, it's so awful that the strike is so early in the year. good luck

amymom replied: Jeanne, as a parent I do not have any experience. I wish you luck. Will they hold school during the strike?

This brings back some memories though:
Back (a long time ago lol) when I was in a private, Catholic high school, our teachers went on strike and they brought in retired nuns and retired substitutes to teach. It was an unusual time for us. I recall the teachers had taken their plan books, attendance etc. One sub(Physics), took attendance by counting and the second day I went to class and he was so upset because there was one extra person. So I offered to leave and he took me up on it. In our advanced Math class the nun who was assigned to teach was a retired elementary teacher(2nd grade I think). She gave us those card board ---sew by the numbers --- forms to do and when we laughed she gave us 5 pages of work out of the text book to complete for homework, things we had not even learned yet. I figure she probably couldn't have done it either. We went out to the picket line and told the math teacher and she gave us all the answers.

I hope things go better for your children.

kimberley replied: our support workers went on strike which shut the school down. it didn't last long but it does deprive them of the full curiculum. dry.gif

coasterqueen replied: Not with my kids, but myself when I was younger. I'm sure it wasn't fun for my mom trying to find daycare and the money to send me while the strike was going on. It lasted for quite a while!

msoulz replied: It is against the law in MI for teachers to strike so ours just picketed the administration building every Tuesday for a couple of months until they settled the contract. But I imagine if they could strike they would do as was said before, extend the school year to make up for the days lost. But Saturdays - forget it!!

ETA Jeanne, did they strike today?

jcc64 replied: They settled at 6 am this morning, which was half an hour before they were scheduled to strike. It is also illegal for teachers to strike here in NY--I believe it's illegal for all federal employees to strike, but they do it anyway upon occasion, knowing full well that no one is anxious to put teachers in jail.
To complicate matters, I have been doing my student teaching in this very same district, and had they gone on strike, it would have jeopardized my Dec. graduation date. Thankfully, it's a non-issue now.

redchief replied: I'm glad they got it all cleaned up before it became a problem for you and the rest of the parents in the school district. Strikes mess up plans for vacations and holidays and sometimes after school activities depending on what the school system does to make up the time.

msoulz replied:
That is good news. And you are right, the Detroit Public School teachers walked a couple of years ago for just a few days and I don't recall any of them going to jail or losing jobs.

mom21kid2dogs replied:
