Our language is pretty silly
MommyToAshley wrote: Do you ever wonder why we break our own rules in the English language? I am sure part of it has to do with the origin of the word, but we rarely follow our own phonics rules. I never really thought about how often it occurs until Ashley started writing notes last year and sounding out her own words. She made a "chore list" and here is what she wrote:
Daddy dus the dishis Mommy dus worck Ashley cleens her room today.
mom21kid2dogs replied: You don't realize how awful it really is until you try to teach your child to read and spell, do you?
luvmykids replied: LOL....I get the biggest kick out of the way the kids spell words based on their sounds My favorites are "pingwin" and "budrfli"
Jamison'smama replied: I agree---I love Jamion's notes. Our language is really difficult and I didn't even realize it until Jamison started learning to read--I mean really, try to teach the difference between NO and DO --shouldn't they sound the same?

my2monkeyboys replied: I remember a teacher in college telling us that our language is the hardest to learn. It's bc our lang is a mixed-up pot of all other languages, so we don't really have rules that apply across the board. Nothing makes that clearer than when you're teaching your child to read/write.
HuskerMom replied: I always thought it was funny when my teacher would tell me to sound it out. Well most words if you do sound them out they don't come out right!
redchief replied: Ah, ye complainants, but our language is also the most diverse and dynamic in the world! Techie is English because of it's ability to adopt words from any language. Poets love English because borrowing a word from another language is fair play. Many world languages have a very difficult time expressing emotion and feeling. English can do this more eloquently than any other.
That being sed, its a guud thing English is required in skool becuz otherwise we wood all be luuzing are minds.

punkeemunkee'smom replied: And this is why Taylor gets SO mad when she is trying to read! I do so love the phonetic spelling!
Hillbilly Housewife replied: LOL! Try FRENCH!
ps - abbie - your quote in yoru siggy cracked me up this morning. I had to re-read it twice.
lisar replied: I know what you mean. Lexi spells Though===thou
punkeemunkee'smom replied: If it is true....is it funny or just sad?
Celestrina replied: Here's an icon that shows some words that are commonly misspelled/misused.
lovemy2 replied: What's even funnier is when I read Olivia's writing I can read every word with no problem - when I read real things written by adults sometimes I have to stop to think about how its pronounced
kimberley replied: Ashley is too cute!
i think phonetics is a great tool to teach kids to read but really hurts them later when it comes to spelling. both my boys still spell phoneticly (sp?) when it doubt and struggle with spelling. the teacher's response was not impressive.. she said that by high school they have spell check so it doesn't matter grrrrrrrr
