Opinions please - Appliance color

luvmykids wrote: OK, currently I have a white stovetop set in a cobalt blue counter top and an almond fridge. The floor is white ceramic tile. Tonight my oven went out and what I'm trying to decide is this....

Do I replace it with what I eventually want, which is stainless ( I think so, anyway) even though it will probably be quite a while before I replace the fridge or range (because they are fairly new and working fine) OR do I replace it with white, which would look best with what I have and may have for quite a while?

I'm thinking of the white, since it will be so far down the road ( at least a couple of years) that I get to replace the other appliances and at that point if I'm doing the fridge and the range then what the heck, throw in a new oven. On the other hand, what a waste to buy a white one now and get a stainless one "just because" in a few years.

I know, I'm an over analytical dork rolleyes.gif

MommyToAshley replied: You sound just like me when we had to get new appliances.

One thing to consider is how much you want to spend right now. The stainless cost more for each appliance. If that is not a factor, I would go with the white. It would look better now and you could always sell it if you decide to get a stainless one later. That's what I'd do.

P.S. I would recommend the flat glass cooktops if you don't have one. I upgraded to one when our oven went out and I LOVE it! wink.gif

MoonMama replied:
I agree. thumb.gif

And I have a flat glass cooktop too and I LOVE it as well!

Good luck.

Nina J replied: I say go stainless. I had a few stainless appliances for a year or so, and a few white ones. Now I have all stainless, which looks nice, but it looked nice with a few stainless and some white aswell. When you upgrade the fridge, etc. you'll already have the stove. I wouldn't waste money on a white stove when you would get another in a few years time anyway, especially since stoves generally last for quite awhile. I think the stainless will look nice with the other appliances and your floors are a nice nuetral color, so it's not going to clash and look totally horrible and repulsive and put everyone off your kitchen.

Boo&BugsMom replied: Not sure about the color, but wanted to chime in with the flat tops. We have one and I love it too!!! SO easy to care for and minimal cleaning because things aren't falling inside the burners. thumb.gif

Our Lil' Family replied: I say go with the stainless! I'm not a fan of white appliances (we have black) and since you want to get there eventually just start now!

Oh and I REALLY want a flat top stove! bawling.gif

jcc64 replied: Chiming in here with a gentle reminder about cleaning stainless appliances. With kids, they're pretty impossible to keep looking great. While I still love the look, I'd think twice before buying them again- they cost more and they're harder to clean. I'd go with the white, if I were you.

C&K*s Mommie replied: You can always use appliance paint to get the "look" of what you like/would compliment your decor, without spending much money.gif . Maybe $30 or so, there are stainless paints, and black paints, and of course the whites, almonds, etc. Not sure if it would work for a flat top stove top, but for every other appliance it would work.

luvmykids replied: No new oven after all ohmy.gif The guy was here to look at my dishwasher (which I will be replacing rolleyes.gif ) and I mentioned the oven going out ....it's soooooo old so it made perfect sense to me that it finally conked but all that happened was the timer thingy got stuck and it wouldn't come on; he twisted the knob and wa-la!

In light of the dishwasher I'm glad but I'd gotten a little excited dry.gif

For those of you with the flat glass cooktops, is it worth having to cook with electric? I love to cook with gas (which I have) but hate, hate, hate the mess especially since my cook top is front and center in my island and everyone sees it.

Boo&BugsMom replied: I actually prefer electric. I didn't want gas around with the little ones, plus around here the price of natural gas is so high that it's actually not that expensive to use electric. It's about the same in price. As for cooking, I have had no problems with cooking with electric personally, and like it.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Although my opinion is totally after the fact, I was going to suggest getting the stove the way you want, so go with stainless. Because the stove is the appliance that is the most expensive piece in the kitchen. So why replace it twice if you don't have too? Stainless does show a lot of fingerprints, but they make so many types of SS cleaners these days that it's really not hard IMO to keep clean. No different then all the splatters I have on my white appliances. I also prefer gas over electric. Monica, you watch Top Chef like me and you'll see that all those guys cook on gas. A little scary with kids in the house though, but ohhhh so much better IMO! We currently have a flat-top electric (and although super easy to keep clean), I prefer cooking with gas for the heat factor. It covers the full surface or base of the pot where electric heats in spots IMO. I miss how fast gas heats things up too!

We got great SS appliances for our old kitchen at a Sears outlet store. They had minor dings in them, but well worth the discount! If you have one, go look there!

Maddie&EthansMom replied: They also make a 'stainless steel look' that doesn't show prints and is a lot less expensive. thumb.gif This is what Scotty and I are considering.
