On the allergy/Halloween topic - Are you giving out nut free candy

moped wrote: It never really crossed my mind until today - I don't think I am, and not intentionally. I am giving out little individual pringles chips and the sour patch kids and swedish berry gummy things.......

You>?

Maddie&EthansMom replied: No, I give out healthy-er snacks. wink.gif I will probably never give out candy made with peanuts, just to respect those with the allergies. I know they probably don't get a lot of candy handed out that is peanut free, so I will do my part, whatever it's worth.

DansMom replied: I like Saf-T-Pops, allergen-free lollipops which they sell at K-mart.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
I'll have to look for those, thanks!

I saw at Sam's the other day that they sell large packs of mini playdoh and halloween eraser top pencils. I thought those were a great idea, a safer and more nutritious alternative!

MommyToAshley replied: Shame on me, I never really thought about it until you posted this thread. blush.gif

moped replied:
Oh now that sounds fun - wonder where I could find those here....

Boo&BugsMom replied: Spiderman candy sticks. Not sure what they really are, but they were cheap and that is all we could afford, plus we don't get many trick or treaters around here.

My2Beauties replied: Yeah I never really thought about this until you posted this. blush.gif

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Last year I got 5 groups of trick or treaters. This year, I'm expecting less. So, I'll probably buy the playdoh pack and let Logan have the remainders. As for tricking and treating, we're going to the fall carnival at our church and also to trunk or treating. Any candy Logan gets, I'll go through and decide what's safe.

luvmykids replied: We don't get trick or treaters but if we did I would do the mini play dough.

PrairieMom replied:
Are those the candy cigarettes that they re-packaged? Ben got a bunch of those last year and I threw them all out. I hate candy cigarettes. You know they still sell them in the package that looks like a cigarette box? I bought a entire display case at the gas station once and threw the entire thing in the garbage. I'm kind of a anti smoking nut tho. Imagine that. rolleyes.gif

PrairieMom replied: We won't be handing out candy this year, except for what ever Ben and Al bring home from their trick or treating. I will give that all out to one lucky kid. who ever comes to our door first.

moped replied:
No i don't think she means those at all.....I think she means the sugar sticks, like Lik-a-stik!

Maybe?

PrairieMom replied:
I loves me a lik-a stick. laugh.gif

I don't know. The ones ben got last year were totally the candy cigarettes, complete with the pink end, but the box had spiderman on it.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Possibly, but I am pretty sure a child Tanner's age, unless they are around smokers, wont even look at it and see a "cigarette". They just care that it's candy. smile.gif I haven't opened the package yet so I really don't know what it looks like. unsure.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Ok...opened one. No pink end or anything, just a little white candy stick. biggrin.gif Looks nothing like a cigarette if you ask me. thumb.gif

Cece00 replied: We arent here to hand out candy. But if we were...I never thought about it. I generally just buy a couple of bags & hand it out, it never crossed my mind.

holley79 replied: Shawn bought Starbursts, blow pops and Safe T Pops.

A&A'smommy replied: last year I gave out suckers and some other plain candy... it was all they had left at walmart. This year we wont have any trick or treaters because we live downtown and most people don't even know about our apartment

BAC'sMom replied:

Do you let them keep any candy at all? huh.gif

redchief replied: I know this might offend some, but I don't feel badly about giving out Reeses and Snickers bars. We always have an alternative such as popcorn and apples available.

I know the nut allergic are sensitive, but truth be told, there are as many different allergies as there are different foods (Katie - milk = No malted things, no anything with milk solids in them... there are lots of things she can't have). It's the responsibility of the parents of those kids who have those allergies to monitor what their kids collect or bring home if they are going trick-or-treating in public.

moped replied:
Tara......can I ask why you send the TOT'ng and then give all their candy away??
Just curious? rolleyes.gif

PrairieMom replied:
They look forward to it, we have fun doing it, and I don't give it ALL away, just about 90% of it. They keep enough to tide them over for a few days until they forget about it. They just don't need that much sugar.

moped replied:
Oh yeah - that does make perfect sense!!!!!

holley79 replied:
OK that makes sense. I thought maybe you were being a big ole mean mama. rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: Tanner probably only eats about 20% of what he gets. We throw out gross things, I eat a few yummy things that "he doesn't need" wink.gif , and many times half of it gets thrown out after it sits there too long because he forgets it's there.

Maddie&EthansMom replied:
Oh man I LOVE those things!!!! rolling_smile.gif I loved them as a kid, too. My mom bought some of the spiderman ones and my kids and I ate em up. laugh.gif They are really small and look nothing like a cigarette....nothing how they used to look.

I can't find them around here or I'd buy them. thumb.gif

My kids aren't allowed to have all their candy either.

PrairieMom replied:
thats the problem we had too, thats why we give most of it away. It is WAY fun to see the kid's face when we dump the whole bowl into their sack, then to see the parent's face when they see what we did. rolling_smile.gif

PrairieMom replied:
Grr! growl.gif rolling_smile.gif He doesn't even know we do it. sh.gif
