Ok guys I need your help - for school...
Insanemomof3 wrote: I have to pick a topic to do a persuasive essay. Here are my choices.
· Employee Privacy Rights in the Workplace
· Controversial Television Advertising
· Performance-Enhancing Drugs in Sports
· Outsourcing Jobs to Foreign Countries
· A topic of your choice, approved by your instructor
I was thinking of picking my own topic. But I have NO IDEA what. I could use ideas. Help me out?
TIA!
mammag replied: Do you have any issues you are passionate about? IMO, it's always easier to write about something you are passionate about or at least somewhat familiar with.
Maybe this link will help?
Good luck!

I think this is a good choice--my church actually did this and one of the commercials it used was the "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" ad.
Josie83 replied: I agree with Brenda! That sounds realy interesting, and I'm sure that there will be a lot of recent literature about the subject. Also within that, you could pick which adverts have made you think twice and explore them in more detail
Let us know what you end up deciding xx
mom2tripp replied: I don't know if this will help or not but it kinda goes along with TV advertising. In college I wrote my senior thesis on how women are displayed in TV commercials, always cleaning, cooking, etc and how so many household products are geared towards women. It's pretty interesting if you sit down and pay attention to it--GOOD LUCK and let us know what you decide
Alice replied: How about:
The Candidate's right to privacy vs. the public's right to know??
Seriously: when you vote, do you vote for the person or the issues? If it's the issues, then the canidate has a right to privacy-- about his health, his family, even his arrest history. But if you're voting for the person, then you have a right to find out all you can about the type of person you're voting for, since it will impact the decisions likely to come his way.
How about :
The desires of the majority vs the needs of the minority. We (or at least many of us) live in a democracy, where the majority rules. But there are so many instances where the majority is wrong-- think slavery, apartheid, sufferage.... So where do you draw the line?
How about : The purpose of education: to absorb knowledge or job preparation? If it's all about knowledge, then we should be concentrating on the great thinkers: Plato, Aristotle, and the great writers . If it's about job prep, then we should concentrate more on writing a business letter and grammar and counting change. (But then who will be the "great minds" of our generation? I'll give it some more thought later while I'm teaching an SAT class.
mammag replied:
Actually, we live in a republic not a democracy and it is not majority rule. Just wanted to put this incase she wanted to go with this idea. I don't want to take over this post so I won't go into further detail.
Alice replied: Oops- I stand corrected-- I teach math, not history.
Here's another: Should the consitution be amended so that a foreign-born US citizen could be president? Some people have brought up the idea because of Gov. Shwarzenegger (OK, there's no way I spelled that right ) but maybe a better "candidate" would have been Henry Kissenger. Think of all he knew about US foreignn policy-- he shaped the policies that got us out of Vietnam and into China and started Detante with Russia. Or think about my 7 year old son, adopted from Korea at age 7 months and as American now as any other kid on the block. Or is that a slippery slope we want to avoid??
I would definitely suggest choosing your own topic. After the grader has read the first 10 papers on the same topic, no one is going to "persuade" him of anything.
Alice replied: Hi... I just re-read my last post... the "I stand corrected" was typed with a smile on my face, but probably doesn't read that way. I appreciate the correction. Those details sometimes ellude me; it's been a while since I really had to know the difference, but it would make a difference if written in a school essay.
luvbug00 replied: I like the Household products toward woman or the right to canadicy privacy they seem more interesting.
Jamisons' mommy what did your chuch think was controvercial about the commercial? I'm interested now.
Insanemomof3 replied: Those are good topics, now I have some ideas for my future papers. But I was reading the Canada thing about gay marriage and chose that. Just waiting for the approval from the professor. But I will have to write at least 2 more.
Thanks so much for the ideas, I will let you know how it turns out.
Josie83 replied: At least with that topic you've got plenty of material to look at from both sides . . . lol! I bet that'll be an interesting thing to write an essay on xx
Jamison'smama replied: Well they actually showed the commercial --one where the man had the desk clerk ring his cell phone as a wake-up call instead of his room insinuating that he would be elsewhere when it was time to wake-up--hence what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. Basically it was-- should you be doing something in Vegas you wouldn't want others to know about---do we think we can hide and do things that are wrong and it's okay...is this encouraging negative actions because "no one would know" etc.
off the subject but you know, this is actually the same philosophy I have with my DH......don't say anything to another woman, or look at things on the internet etc. that you say or wouldn't look at if I were standing there. When I talk to an ex. I only say things that I would say if my DH were right there etc. Good philosophy to live by.
Anyway--sorry, didn't mean to take over the thread---just wanted to answer a question.
