Oh boy - we may be moving
mysweetpeasWil&Wes wrote: We always knew that Colorado Springs wasn't permanent, but DH's boss asked him yesterday to make a list of places to relocate. No other details, that was it. So he came home and asked me to help him. Wow, what a shock! I knew that it was ALWAYS a possibility, since his company likes to transfer for promotions. But I just wasn't prepared for this. Especially when we are left in the dark as to what's going on with his branch. On the positive side, at least his boss is looking out for his employees and won't just say "we're closing our doors, you are all unemployed" tomorrow, but it's still a scary thought. DH doesn't like this town, plus he's used to moving around, so it's not a big deal to him, but I have made a lot of friends here and I am NOT used to moving around (I only moved twice from birth until college).
Anyway, here are our options (which doesn't mean there is a job opening there, but just where they have other offices) - we chose all West coast areas just because it's closest to our family. There is a ton of divisions on the east coast, but it just seems too far. Please give me your feedback if you live in one of these areas. Pros and cons please. Again, it all depends on the offer for us, but right now, all we were asked to do was make a list of places we are willing to relocate. This is our list so far:
California area: San Diego (Carlsbad) Valencia, north LA (closest to my parents, in-laws and sister) Pleasenton (sp?) in the bay area I think, but not by the ocean They may also have one in the Oakland area
Texas: Houston
New Mexico: Albuquerque
Nevada: Reno Las Vegas (but not an option for me)
Colorado: Denver (my first choice so that we can stay relatively close to friends, plus we lived there for 5 years and I'm familiar with it)
Arizona: Tucson
THANKS!
Calimama replied: Wow, exciting! I'm about 20 minutes tops from Carlsbad!! California is expensive so take that into account.Gas here is 3.20.
amymom replied: Good Luck! I do not know anything about the west coast. So I have no input for you.
Nosy quetion though.... why is Las Vegas not an option for you??
Kirstenmumof3 replied: Good Luck! I don't know anything about any of those places! But I hope you get to move to one you like!
luvmykids replied: Well of course I vote for Albuquerque
It really is a great city, warm friendly people, awesome seasons, some really gorgeous scenery, interesting culture, lots of neat places to go and see within minimal driving distance. Great Mexican food Most of the comforts of a big city as far as shopping, food, etc just no pro sports. Housing is affordable, overall cost of living is pretty good. The public schools stink IMHO. Not very green, we're always in a drought crisis. I'm having trouble what to say, I guess because I've lived her for 30 years I'm blank on what a newcomer would want to know. But in light of other places I've visited I'm always happy to come back and wouldn't really want to live anywhere else.
All I know about San Diego is it's crowded, hectic, and expensive. I love to visit but couldn't live there.
KUP!
A&A'smommy replied: Good luck honey!!!
skinkybaby replied: I live in one of the Houston 'burbs. It gets hotter than you know what here, but I love it. There's a lot to do and its close to the water!
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: You're not nosy...It's just so dang hot, although I know Arizona and Texas are too. I used to go there a lot to...well you know, party! So that's all I can think of about that place. I heard the prices are reasonable though.
Monica, why didn't I know you were in NM? I'm sure you have mentioned it, but I forget. I've heard great things about NM, but I heard the same thing about the schools. I also heard it's quite a big city, which I'm not sure I'm up for at this point in my life.
I guess everywhere is an option for the right offer, right??! I'll let you all know if anything comes of this. Keep bringing on any advice!
luvmykids replied: I think we're only about 150,000 larger than CO Springs. Here's the city homepage if you want to browse it, I think there is a link under the "Living" section that tells you why it's such a great place to live ABQ Home
flirtycuddle replied: I live in Vegas and it's umm ok. We live in a condo so I really don't know what the houses go for. There are a lot of parks and such but from what I know of the schools there are some really good ones and them some really bad ones. Also Henderson is right next to vegas along with the sub section of henderson green valley. Green valley is nicer then henderson and summerlin is one of the nicer sections but can be a big commute depending one where the job is. If you don't go around main street and the fremont street expericence its not to bad. It gets hot but Tucson gets hotter lol. I used to live in Phx and that even gets hotter then vegas.
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: Obviously my vote would be Denver...purely selfish reasons.
It can get HOT in Valencia and I don't think it's a particularly nice area to live so I would have to check it out first before giving a definative answer there. I know your not crazy about teh idea of Vegas but there is a lot besides just the strip. go out of town a few miles and it's like a different planet. Plus is only about 5 hours from home so that could be nice. You could drive to your parents house if Rich was going ot be having a long week at work. I know it's miserably hot but I have even been concidering going there just to get closer. Plus it's only miserable in teh summer, nice in teh spring and fall, and can get cold in teh winter. When thought about that way it could be pretty nice.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Honestly, Houston is not my favorite town in Texas. It is viewed quite frequently as a socialite town, but I happen to think it's dirty. There's nothing in the Dallas area? Dallas has some great suburbs. The plus side to TX is cost of living. You can get a lot of house for your money here.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Thanks for the link Monica, I will check it out.
Lisa, DH and I took a hike today and I looked at him and said "do you really want to leave this?". Pikes Peak had snow, yet we were in green pine trees, the weather just perfect...It's breathtaking! It's so funny how he had to sorta drag me here, since I was such a CA beach girl 7 year ago, but now all I want are mountains. I can't see leaving it now. That's why Reno sounds appealing (for Lake Tahoe), but gosh, I just don't know.
Aimee, I just asked DH if there is an office in Dallas and he said yes. Don't know why I missed that one on the list!
Brias3 replied: Wow! I've only ever lived in Vegas (for a short time during childhood) so I can't offer a fair evaluation on any of those locations really but wanted to wish you luck! What an exciting opportunity this might turn out to be!
lovemy2 replied: I know your family is on the West Coast but the East Coast is beautiful - wonderful changes of seasons, etc. but winter can be tough -
I know nothing about the West Coast except AZ, my Gram lives there and I have been there several times - it is beautiful but too hot in the summer and after living all my life with a change of seasons I find it to be boring!!!
Good luck and KUP!
DansMom replied: Among those options, I'd choose San Diego.
I would also consider Denver and Tucson as choices 2 and 3.
The others would be farther down my list.
Good luck, Rae!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Cool!!
I have a friend in Tucson...she loves it. I also have a friend in San Diego and she loves it there. I think you would be happy anyplace. It's really what you make of it. However, I don't blame you for not wanting to leave CO. That place is gorgeous. I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could tolerate the altitude.
luvmykids replied: We have mountains I live in 'em! The really beautiful ones more like where you are are north of here by about two hours though
I agree with Aimee, you'll make it good no matter where you end up Dh is trying to get a project in La Veta, wouldn't it be funny if you ended up here and I ended up there
