OK, gas...what do you do when you've - tried everything
My2Beauties wrote: Last night Aubrey had a horrible night, for about an hour and a half in the middle of the night she was screaming because of a tummy ache Her legs were drawing up and she was arching her back. I tried giving her gas drops twice and they didn't work, I tried rubbing her belly, I tried doing the bicycle thing with her legs. I gave her sugar water, which normally makes her poop right away, I tried everything I could I swear and nothing worked. She just got so wore out that she basically crashed, laying straight on her back with her legs sort of open and laying down. I had to lull her to sleep though by sort of rocking her a bit, then she fell asleep for the rest of the night. She is on that antibiotic and I thought that it might give her diarrhea so I gave her some applesauce on Monday night...do you guys think that could have constipated her. I mean she's had applesauce before and never had a belly ache that bad, this is the first time she has ever done that before. Normally when she has a bit of gas she might whine a bit, but gas drops usually soothe her right away. Does anyone know of a good method. I mixed some Apple Prune Juice this morning half and half with warm water to make sure she goes to the bathroom today. It was 1 oz of juice to 3 oz of water, because the last time I gave her 2 and 2 equally - let's just say she ruined her outfit when she finally did go Last night she had carrots, I've never heard of that giving babies problems?? Other than that she hasn't had anything at all that she hasn't already eaten before.
grapfruit replied: So are you thinking the apple sauce may of stopped her up?? Or just the medication.
coasterqueen replied: Did you try a warm bath. That can help too.
Calimama replied: Ditto on the bath!! For Bella I would lay her on her back in the water and massage her belly, do the bicycle thing again.
A&A'smommy replied: Poor baby girl, and mommy!!! Everything I could think of has already been said.. I never heard of applesauce stopping a baby up though.. apples always help alyssa go!!
My2Beauties replied: Well I know the BRAT diet consists of Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast and they are supposed to be things that stop diarrhea, so I'm assuming they can potentially stop a baby up? I'm not certain though. I've always heard bananas and applesauce are constipating, but apple juice helps them go! I don't know Anyways, I didn't try a bath since it was like 2 in the morning. I thought about it though.
A&A'smommy replied: ha I'm so dumb sometimes (I blame it on pg brain) Poor baby I hope ya'll have a better night tonight!!
Boo&BugsMom replied: Is it gas or constipation? If it's constipation we use to buy Aiden pediatric suppositories. They are liquid and they work within 1 minute of dispensing it. They worked wonders for him. For gas we used the Playtex bottles with the liners...produce less gas. That seemed to help both Aiden and Tanner. The drops never worked for either of them too. We also used slower flow nipples so they wouldn't drink it so fast. They make formula for gas as well.
boyohboyohboy replied: do you think she could have some food allergies? or sensativities, i think you mentioned before about her having the runny nose and other issues that make me wonder if she just was sensative to it? i would think that the apple sauce would make her go, not constipate her. i hope she feels better, she sure has been thru a lot lately.
My2Beauties replied: I remember Hanna being gassy too whenever she started solids at first, I thought it was just their system getting used to it though. Would food allergies cause a runny nose/congestion?? I'll try the suppositories too. Thanks.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: I have heard that carrots can cause a baby to be constipated. Maybe give her juice every time you feed her carrots to help combat it. Have you tried gripe water for gas? That helped Allie a lot when she was super gassy and colicky.
Allie was super constipated all of the time when she first started on solids. I was constantly giving her gas drops and trying to give her water and juice with a dropper because she wouldn't take a bottle. We did end up giving her one of the liquid suppositories Jennie mentioned once and that worked well. It will probably take her a little while to adjust to digesting the new foods. How old is Aubrey again? For some reason I keep thinking that she's older than Allie. I'm lost without tickers to look at.
My2Beauties replied: She's 6 months old, she started ons olids at around 5 months of age somewhere in there. She is adjsuting ok it just seems like certain times she gets gassy and it's not when she eats anything in particular neither, one day it could be sweet potatoes and she gets gassy another day carrots another day pears or something weird like that.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Yeah that's how Allie was for awhile after starting solids... she started somewhere around 5 1/2 months too. I think it's just a lot of new foods that their little bodies need to get used to digesting. I don't think you'd need to avoid any certain food, it just takes awhile for them to get used to it. I think it took Allie a couple months to stop getting gassy and constipated. For awhile I was giving her prunes every day or two otherwise she couldn't poop. She is 8 1/2 months now and is hardly ever gassy or constipated.
My2Beauties replied: Sounds like how Hanna was too. I gave her prune juice all the time.
