No milk?

kimberley wrote: Mollie's thread about raw milk got me thinking about milk in general. i know a lot of people are lactose intollerant, dislike the taste or won't take anything from an animal.

does anyone not drink milk or give their kids milk? and what do you subsitute to get the nutritional aspects of milk?

i am thinking my son may have an intollerance and he dislikes soy so i am looking for other options. tia.

mommy~to~a~bunch replied: A lot of the cases of lactose intolerance are caused from the processing of the milk.

kimberley replied: good to know! thanks, Mollie.

momofone replied: I've tried soy milk almond milk rice milk and I'll have the orange juice fortified with calcium. They're all good.

boyohboyohboy replied: jake is severly allergic to milk, we use silk soy milk for kids...it has all the added vitamins. he loves it

gr33n3y3z replied: Katie is highly allergic to milk products
Katie drinks Lacaid Or The Store Brand Lactose free milk they take the lactose out.
And she takes pills Digestive Advantage Lactose Intolerance Therapy
And that keeps her good

So Katie doesnt need a subsitute bc she eats great

Edited to add Katie Hates any soy they all taste is foul her words lol

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I've never been a milk drinker. Not even as a child. I was breastfed well past a year and I guess just drank water and juice. I really don't know, but I never would have milk. I hate it. It also makes me sick. I can't tolerate ice cream a lot of times, but I can eat my weight in cheese everyday with no problems. So, I think it does have a lot to do with how it is processed. I never drank a substitute for milk, either. I seem to be pretty healthy. LOL. I eat a lot of yogurt and cheese....

TrulyBlessed replied: I don't like milk, so I don't drink it. Well, I do drink chocolate milk, but not white milk. biggrin.gif I eat a lot of cheese, so that should give me my calcium. My girls both drink milk.

kimberley replied: that's interesting, Aimee. my son is your twin. he eats cheese and yogurt but gets sick after milk or ice cream. i guess i worry more about the fats he's missing because he gets calcium in the juice he drinks.

Kirstenmumof3 replied: hug.gif I'm lactose intolerant and I drink Soy Milk. It took a while to find a brand that I really like. I've been drinking Soy milk for years now and I feel much better.

Anthony275 replied: milk is DISGUSTING. dosent anybody else find drinking something white really weird?
as soon as my kids are old enough to eat solid food, they'll never have milk again
especially if it's cows milk or any other milk from an animal...its made for animals rolleyes.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: hav eyou tried different brands of soy milk? different flavours? dh hates soy milk, but WILL drink the chocolate flavored one, if i put it in a different container and just say it's chocolate milk... rolleyes.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
I would say if he does fine with cheese and yogurt and those types of dairy then he's probably getting enough calcium and protein from those and wouldn't even need to drink milk or any kind of substitute for it. my sister was the same way as Aimee, but my mom thought she needed to have milk so she'd make her drink two small glasses of it every day - she'd chug it down as fast as she could and then drink a huge glass of water to get the taste out. tongue.gif I don't think she was lactose intolerant though she just didn't like it. Allie is the same way too - I can't get her to drink milk to save my soul and I've had a hard time reconciling myself to weaning her if she won't be drinking milk - but I've come to the conclusion that since she loves yogurt and will eat cheese, that just drinking water and juice is OK. happy.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: My DH can't tolerate any dairy, but does fine on unsweetened soy milk. He takes a calcium supplement too. As far as fats, I think he gets plenty from meats, fish, eggs, nuts (which he eats a lot!). I would suggest trying goats milk products and see if your son can tolerate them more. I like goat cheese and yogurt, but my kids and I do fine with cow milk products...Must be organic though.

coasterqueen replied: Kylie had to drink Lactaid for a couple of years when she started drinking regular milk (and not breastmilk). Her body just couldn't handle regular cow's milk. I was later told it's all in the processing of it like Mollie had mentioned. That's when we went to goats milk. She tolerated that for a while, but later refused but only because of taste. Then we went to organic cows milk and she doesn't do too bad on it, actually.

My mother and sister are lactose intolerant and drink Lactaid.

I was allergic to the dairy protein as an infant and drank goats milk. Can't stand the taste of it now, though. blush.gif

Have you tried other forms of milk, like goats milk? It is supposedly (as all the research my MIL pointed out to me) the easiest for the human body to digest. My MIL has problems with cows milk, but can handle goats milk pretty well.

kimberley replied: thanks everyone. i appreciate all the ideas. i will try goat's milk and look for raw milk. if they don't work, i might just skip it altogether.

moped replied: I drink a TON of skim milk - at least a litre a day if not more.........

We all like it and drink it here,

Boys r us replied: I am just like Aimee. I can eat yogurt, I can eat cheese all day long and have NO problems..but if I touch milk or ice cream..whew...bad bad news!!!
I don't replace it with anything.
